5 out of 5 stars Disappointing in the strangest way   June 20, 2003

(Disclaimer: I'm an Anime fan)pThis is a disappointing DVD boxset. But not in the way you're thinking. From the first sequence of 'Final Flight of the Osiris' through to the final snippets in 'The making of...', you realise that not only is there a lot more freedom when making 9 minutes of film, this is also what the 'Matrix' concept is suited to.pQuite honestly, this shows up 'Reloaded' to be what it really was. Overly long, pretentious, and rushed. It lacked so many of the little touchs that are just cramed into every short episode on this disc. It wasn't cohesive. It's just disappointing that the new live action film doesn't come close to this standard... pBut this DVD is where the Matrix comes to life.pIt's not hurt by some cutting edge FX (Photorealistic Square through to stunningly artistic 'Kids Story'), great score, and strong pacing. Nor by it's A and B list Anime directors. In fact, I think this is perhaps the Wachowskis finest hour.pThe second disc in this set is the soundtrack to the movie. Once again, I was expecting this to be the standard add-on material that often accompanies these boxsets. It's not. Many of the tracks are excellent, with only the occasional 'flaw' in an otherwise stunning album. However, it's quite serious House and 'Drum and Bass' music. If that's not your cup'o'tea, then stick with £12.00 single disc edition.pI loved it. Perhaps you will too.

4 out of 5 stars Animatrix plus soundtrack   June 21, 2003

This DVD and CD box set combines the Animatrix a series of 9, 15-minute long episodes and the fantastic CD/soundtrack from the series. The programmes focus on telling the story behind the Matrix and go some way to answering some question raised by both of the movies currently released.brFor example the first two episodes, The Second Renaissance parts I and II depicts the events before the first film; The Matrix. It tells of the rising of the machines and the creation of the matrix.brAnother instalment shows the events before the second film; The Matrix Reloaded in which the Osiris is forced to make a dead drop in the matrix, risking their lives in the process to ensure the safety of Zion.brA different guest director directs each episode and therefore each has a varying style from the others. The Final Flight of the Osiris for example uses computer generated graphics whilst The Second Renaissance parts I and II are animated in the normal fashion.brFor any die-hard fan of the Matrix this is a must have as it explains a lot of the back-story and answers many questions that you left the cinema pondering.
