Amazon.co.uk Review For anyone who has lost a loved one, IMoonlight Mile/I will ring true with heartfelt emotion. Like the characters in this well-acted film, writer-director Brad Silberling confronted death when his girlfriend, actress Rebecca Schaeffer, was murdered in 1989. That tragedy gives IMoonlight Mile/I its mournful authenticity, beginning in 1973 after the killing of a young woman whose fiancé, Joe (Jake Gyllenhaal), is living with her grieving parents (Dustin Hoffman, Susan Sarandon) while contemplating his uncertain future. The film is occasionally sidetracked by Hollywood slickness, but Silberling (who scored box-office hits with ICasper/I and ICity of Angels/I) gets the emotional details exactly right, and a potentially formulaic romance between Joe and a local girl (superbly played by newcomer Ellen Pompeo) feels like a natural step toward recovery. Holly Hunter plays a small but pivotal role, and while IMoonlight Mile/I lacks the gravity of the dramatically similar IIn the Bedroom/I, it springs from the same source of compassionate understanding. --IJeff Shannon/I

Excellent! August 13, 2004 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I'll admit it now, my reason for buying this film was because of my little obsession with Jake Gyllenhaal, however I found this film to be brilliant!brAt first I thought the story sounded a little depressing-girl shot dead leaving her greiving parents and fiance to pick up the pieces. It is so much more than that. It deals with death in a really good way-the characters show grief but subtley.brSusan Sarandon and Dustin Hoffman as the parents are amazing as always and Jake Gyllenhaal and Ellen Pompeo as the fiance and his new love intrest truly hold their own opposite them.brThe film has an excellent soundtrack and I highly recommend it!

MOONLIGHT MILE opens on the morning of the day during which Diana Floss is to be buried by her father Ben (Dustin Hoffman), mother JoJo (Susan Sarandon), and fianc#233; Joe (Jake Gyllenhaal). Diana was caught in the gunfire a man directed at his wife, a waitress in a local cafe. The remainder of the film follows Joe for 2-3 weeks as he continues to live in Diana#x27;s old room, serving to keep the girl#x27;s memory alive for Ben and JoJo. Moreover, Joe sticks with the original plan to have been followed after he and Diana were married, i.e. to join Ben as a partner in his commercial real estate business. And there are occasional sidebars to the legal proceedings against Diana#x27;s killer being handled by lawyer Mona (Holly Hunter).pThe film is a perceptive and not overly sentimental depiction of the mourning of the Walking Wounded after the grave of a loved one is covered over and the friends and food of Shiva week are gone. (The Floss family is Jewish.) Sarandon has perhaps the meatiest role as JoJo. Her monolog to Joe about what keeps her and Ben together (and bickering) after 31 years is the Great Truth of many marriages, I suspect, and possibly the movie#x27;s best single scene. pNotwithstanding my high regard for the film, I#x27;m bothered by the niggling feeling that Gyllenhall#x27;s portrayal of Joe was too one dimensional. It#x27;s as if his life begins with the opening scene. At no time does the audience learn about his past. Where was he born and raised? Does he have siblings or living parents? Did he have dreams of being anything before meeting Diana? It#x27;s like he#x27;s this orphan, a blank slate upon which his connection with the Floss family writes. There#x27;s no depth to the young man, and this viewer was relieved when the local USPS station manager and part-time bar waitress Bertie (Ellen Pompeo) got him to snap out of his funk. Bertie herself is one of the Walking Wounded, her boyfriend now being MIA in Vietnam for a couple of years. (The film is set in the early 70s).pI can only give MOONLIGHT MILE four and a half stars because of my stated reservations about Joe#x27;s persona, but am comfortable with the fact that this rating system will round it up to five.
Fantasic film! February 20, 2004 Covell (United Kingdom) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is one of the best films i have EVER seen.brI rented it from a video shop and watched it at least 3 times before returning it- and have just ordered the dvd. With a fantastic soundtrack, great script and superb acting all round, this is one film not to be missed.brJake Gyllenhaal plays the part of Joe Nast superbly. He hardly has to move a muscle to bring across a new emotion and just fits right into the part- it really is like watching life on a video. Then Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon are as great as they always have been and somehow manage to convey the awkwardness felt at such times with a great deal of emotion and humour. However I feel the best part of this film comes in the form of the stunning Ellen Pompeo. I have never seen her in anything before but she steals the show in this one. She really shows emotion and you feel everything s though you are right there.pI believe this is a great film, even if you are not into this gene it it well worth seeing.( and buying!)

Moonlight Mile is a beautifully produced movie that explores grief with such realistic honesty that will both reduce you to tears, make you laugh and then warm your heart. Ranking along side 'Terms of Endearment' for it's heart-breaking wonderfulness, this is a must-see film! (Make sure you have your hankies though..)
