Amazon.co.uk Review Peter Kosminsky's 1992 adaptation of Emily Bronte's IWuthering Heights/I goes to the extreme of casting Sinead O'Connor in a brief bit as Bronte herself, but the film still doesn't approach the accomplishment of William Wyler's classic 1939 production (with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon) or subsequent versions by Luis Bunuel and Robert Fuest. That doesn't make it unwatchable, however: it still offers IThe English Patient/I costars Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche as doomed lovers Heathcliff and Cathy. Binoche is a bit washed-out, but Fiennes makes a strong impression as the rejected labourer who makes his fortune and exacts a vengeance. Unlike Wyler's film, this one covers all the chapters of Bronte's book, but it is sodden with misery and lacks all grace. --ITom Keogh/I

Obsessive love October 4, 2001 18 out of 21 found this review helpful
I have given this film five stars, mainly on the strength of Ralph Fiennes performance. He focuses on bringing out the raw side of Heathcliff, showing him as an uncultured rough man driven by a need to possess utterly the only woman who has ever touched him emotionally. For a portrayal of uncontrolled obsessive love see this man act. Juliette Binoche trys hard to match him as Cathy but she struggles to portray convincingly the wild tormenting streak that Cathy is meant to have and her elusive 'catch me if you can' nature and it is difficult to see why Heathcliiff would have been driven almost mad by a desire to have her. Still, that aside, the music is haunting and the film is visually stunning with wild sweeping expanses of moor and sky. I also thought it worked well with Emily Bronte narrating the story as it highlighted the underlying emotional longing, both that of the lovers and also of the girl that wrote the story. See the film just to lose yourself and catch a glimpse of a wildness that is better portrayed in this film than any of the other versions I have seen.
FANTASTIC!!!! May 15, 2005 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This version of Emily Bronte's Wuthering heights is Brilliant! I can't pick a single fault! You are drawn into the film in the first second especially by the dramatic soundtrack - which is fantastic! This film has suceeded in being faithful to the book by bringing alive the beautiful story of Catherine and Heathcliff's love. Definetly worth buying, especially to fans of the book who want a film faithful to the book and want to see the breath taking story alive on film!
Wuthering Heights - Ralph Fiennes/Juliette Binoche January 26, 2005 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
My first thought of this was the casting of Juliette Binoche - a french actress as Cathy, although you can no doubt hear the accent, I liked her performance of Cathy/Catherine.pRalph Fiennes makes the movie for me. He is Heathcliff and plays the part very well, and his never ending love for Cathy. pCredit should be also given to the haunting music used - I hear it in my head for a long time after - very effective. pI preferred this version much more to the more recent ITV version.
if emily bronte had been a filmaker December 29, 2003 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
this wonderful adaptation captures something of the spirit and soul of emily bronte's passionate novel 'wuthering heights'. the film grasps the deep, dangerous and complex relationship between cathy and heathcliffe, beautifully acted by binoche and fiennes with subtlety and sensitivity. whilst the film makes a couple of surprising additions - sinead o' connor popping up as the authoress complete with hooded cloak - the inventiveness of the direction compliments the untamed essence of the original story. brthis is a film that enraptures, honestly, the feelings portrayed getting inside your skin in some incredibly memorable and moving scenes. accompanied by a beautiful score and some great cinematography, even those who might scoff at the thought of reading such a "woman's book" have been seen to be completely immersed in this fantastic version . . . and even admitted it afterwards! brdesperately trying to find something bad to say about this film. ummmm, the ending comes too soon.
The best film version of Wuthering Heights January 3, 2004 Mrs. Jan Snaith (Near Oxford England) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Thank goodness this is now on DVD. Ralph is the best Heathcliff ever. What a moving adaptation of this fab book. The best film ever. I enjoyed this film so much I have watched more than ten times. Sakamotos music to the film is awesome, especially "Young Catherine", it moves the heart and soul.pYou cannot miss this film, especially if you enjoyed the book.
