Amazon.co.uk Review
Anyone who's watched just about any teenage film knows that the greatest evil in this world isn't chemical warfare, ethnic cleansing, or even the nuclear bomb. The worst crime known to man? Why, virginity, of course. As we've learned from countless films--from ISummer of '42/I to IRisky Business/I--virginity is a criminal burden that one must shed oneself of as quickly as possible. And while many of these films have given the topic a bad name, IAmerican Pie/I quietly sweeps in and gives sex some of its dignity back. Dignity, you may say? How can a film that highlights intercourse with fruit pies, premature ejaculation broadcast across the Internet and the gratuitous "gross-out" shots restore the dignity of a genre that's been encumbered with such heavyweights as IPorky's/I and ILosin' It/I? The plot of iAmerican Pie/i may be typical, with four high-school friends swearing to "score" by prom, yet the film rises above the muck with its superior cast, successful and sweet humour, and some actually rather retro values about the meaning and importance of sex. Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas and Eddie Kaye Thomas make up the odd quartet of pals determined to woo, lie and beg their way to manhood. The young women they pursue are wary girlfriend Vicky (Tara Reid), choir girl Heather (Mena Suvari), band geek Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), and just about any other female who is willing and able. Natasha Lyonne as Jessica, playing a similar role as in ISlums of Beverly Hills/I, is the general advisor to the crowd (when Vicky tells her "I want it to be the right time, the right place," Jessica responds, "It's not a space shuttle launch, it's Isex/I"). The comedic timing hits the mark--especially in the deliberately awkward scenes between Jim (Biggs) and his father (Eugene Levy). And, of course, lessons are learned in this genuinely funny film, which will probably please the adult crowd even more than it will the teenage one. --IJenny Brown/I

5 out of 5 stars P I E ! !   October 25, 2003

You'll never look at warm apple pie the same way again! pAmerican Pie takes a hysterical look at the goal of four "unlucky in love" high school friends who make the ultimate pact: lose their virginity by prom night. As they try to manipulate their way into the hearts of some of their classmates, their plans often backfire with hilarity. One fails to score with the sexy foreign exchange student and then makes a last ditch effort with a band member who has an interesting way with her flute, while another is so desperate he actually hires someone to give him a "reputation". pFollow the raging hormones of four teenage boys and their girls as they gear up for the most important night of their lives; the prom? pSit back and enjoy a piece of America's #1 comedy hit! Once you have seen this, you will not wait until you want to see the sequels!

Some people have stated that this film is the Porky's for the nineties. I disagree, Porky's was unrealistic and daft. American pie, it has to be said, is one of those films which captures the moment precisely and is therefore extreemly funny. The script was written by someone who fully understands the sexual angst that teenagers go through in order to 'come of age'. The whole apple pie scene definitly deserves to enter cinema myth and legend as one of those great funnies, which I'm sure will be copied to death, as will the 'Beer with added extras' scene.

This is one of the funniest films I've seen. Ever. It shows how teenagers really are, horny, desperate, confused and full of abusive language.brThe way Alyson Hannigan portrays Michelle, the sexually active band geek is awsome. You'll be going to you friends "This One Time..."brThis definatly holds some of the funniest character's you'll ever come across. Stifler is pure entertainment, Jim is generally amusing, Finch is just so werid and everyone else is so unique you'll be falling off your chair with laughter!!

5 out of 5 stars American Pie   January 24, 2005

If you mix some of the most toe-curlingly embarrassing scenes with some of the grossest practical jokes with some of the twee-est and sugary sweet romantic episodes all together you should end up with a film that is, in simple terms, a load of rubbish. You get all this, and more, with American Pie and yet somehow this remains and one of the most entertaining and funniest films I have ever seen.pThe "rite of passage" of teenage high school kids has been filmed again and again, some with more success than others, and this film doesn't have any secret ingredients. It follows the story of four high school friends trying their hardest to loose their virginities before the high school prom dance. Each has their very own particular hang-up about why they never seem to succeed with girls and we follow our four heroes through their varying ups and downs.pWhat American Pie does do differently to the other brat-frat type films is take a huge dose of self-depreciation so that it never comes over high handed or fantastical. Yes, all the high school kids seem to have perfect teeth, hair and bodies, but they are all so imperfect in their own way you can identify with them and sympathise with their predicaments.pAnyway enough of the "message", what about the great scenes. The "father-son" relationship of Jim and his father is simply magic. The transformation of Oz from sport-jock to choirboy-romantic whilst being almost vomit inducing on the one hand works in such a lovely simple way on the other you can't help but be drawn in by it. The "Graduate" likening of Finch's big night is great fun and the best character has to be "Band Camp" Alyson. Where did you leave your flute by the way?pForget the meanings, forget good taste, sit back and roar with laughter. Brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars A fine film, not to be missed   February 28, 2000

'American Pie' is great! I went to see it twice at the cinema, and I can't wait to get it on video. The previous reviewer is right that it's like a version of 'Porkies' for the nineties - it's a modern updating of the 80's frat-house comedy genre in more ways than one. By contrast with its earlier (inferior) cousin, 'American Pie' is intelligent, unexploitative and has decent roles for its female characters. pIt's also tempting to compare 'Pie' to 'There's Something About Mary' because both films share a high gross-out factor - Jim's exploits with the pie, his sock (!) and a collection of adult magazines form a running joke through the course of the whole film, and there probably isn't a sexual taboo that isn't confronted. And of course there's the funny-tasting beer and the laxative gags (both of which the film would have been better without, really).pBut to compare 'American Pie' with either of these other films is to miss what makes is truly unique - it's outlook is unashamedly romantic and optimistic, with a complex set of messages that you'd never expect from a film nominally about four guys out to get laid. Our heroes' relationships evolve in entirely different, unexpected ways, largely avoiding clichés and cheap gags too... resulting in much of the film being totally hilarious: the live-sex Internet broadcast is awesomely funny. See this film!
