Amazon.co.uk Review William Friedkin's taut direction highlights IThe Hunted/I, a bloodsport thriller that works best without dialogue. It's a prime vehicle for co-stars Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro, whose rugged screen personas are perfectly matched in a manhunt between a military assassin and the man who trained him to kill. Traumatised by atrocities in Kosovo four years earlier (the site of an action-packed prologue), Hallam (Del Toro) is seemingly psychotic and now killing in the forests of Oregon; Bonham (Jones) is lured out of retirement by a tenacious FBI agent (Connie Nielsen) to end Hallam's murder spree. The hackneyed plot is derivative to a fault (no surprise from the screenwriters of ICollateral Damage/I), and the whole movie's a foregone conclusion, but Friedkin inspires fine work from his well-trained stars while exploring the ambiguity of Hallam's character. Lushly photographed by Caleb Deschanel, IThe Hunted/I is a survivalist's dream, militarily authentic and most effective when its primal instincts are cinematically expressed. I--Jeff Shannon/I

great TLJ performance, limp movie November 25, 2003 Deborah MacGillivray (US UK) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Tommy Lee Jones can make any movie worth watching, even limp ones and this ones is so lame. Actually a waste of his powerhouse talents. Tommy Lee Jones is a trainer of assassins, and he trains Benicio Del Toro (The Usual Suspects) into the perfect killing machine. We have given reasons (VAGUE REASONS) why suddenly Del Toro cannot stomach being a killing machine any longer, so what does he do...goes rogue and kills. There is only one person who can catch him, Tommy Lee Jones, who is ageing.pSo starts a nice cat and mouse game - but who is the cat and mouse. Nice watch, but will soon fade. Doubt most people would want repeat views of this movie, is do, suggest getting a used copy. Tommy Lee is worth that. His performance is marvellous, just the rest of the film does not match his level.
Hunter or hunted August 11, 2004 J. Glen (Scotland) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a taut workmanlike film which works on several levels. It is an action thriller, a discussion of what happens to a man who is trained to be a killer and a chase movie, although the chasing is done on foot, not in high octane cars.pBoth Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Torres give excellent performances of laid back excellence. The film takes its time to tell their story, a story of what happens when a man cracks because he has seen too much violence and death and he has to be hunted down by his trainer. pThe scenes and flashbacks depicting what BDT saw and experienced are haunting in their intensity and explain, without words, why he turned from being a trained and disciplined killer into an rogue who killed anybody whom he perceived as a legitimate target.pTLJ is totally convincing as the trainer of killers who has turned his back on what he once was and lives in peace with himself and nature, but who is called back to help track down a killer who turns out to be BDT.pThere are other actors in this film notably Connie Nielson as the FBI agent but it is basically a two hander between the two men, this is a film well worth seeing and it proves that pages of dialogue are not always necessary to keep the viewer's attention riveted to what is happening on the screen.
Thoroughly enjoyable October 10, 2003 - alikat - (Brighton, UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Great movie, just what you want to rent on a Saturday night. There's action all the way through, and while it's not the most original idea, it has it's own slant on a winning formula. Both actors fit their roles nicely and the fight scenes are superb. It's been mentioned before, but if you liked the fugitive, you can't fail to enjoy this.
'First Blood', crossed with 'The Fugitive' November 27, 2003 Mr. Stephen Kennedy (Doha, Qatar) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
It's not hard to see how this movie got made.. a director known for gritty streetwise thrillers (The French Connection), about a soldier who was trained to kill, but now can't turn it off due to battle scarring (First Blood, anyone?), starring Tommy lee Jones reprising his role in the Fugitive, but with a twist..brTommy Lee Jones is just the right casting for the role of the 'Tracker' - a man whose father was a soldier, but trained his son how to kill, and survive in the wilderness, be stealthy - in order that he would never have to kill. Now one of his proteges has gone rogue, and TLJ is brought out of retirement to track him down, meeting along the way the FBI agent played by Connie Nielsen.brThe concept is a good one, if unoriginal. The idea of the tracker is fascinating, and as the extras on the DVD show, not without basis in fact - but the execution is a mixed bag.brOn the plus side, the knife fighting scenes have a gritty fast moving realism to them that has rarely been seen. This is one of the movies big attractions. On the minus side, the movie feels like it has been chopped up, and pieces gone missing. Even the deleted scenes only give a hint to some of the directions the movie was going. There is a cynicism about Americas military here, similar to Friedkins last movie Rules of Engagement, but whatever message comes along with that has thinned out along the way. The roles the actors play do not leave the actors room to flesh out and inhabit their characters. Connie Nielsen does her best, which is pretty darn good, in a woefully underwritten role which seems in the end to serve little useful purpose. brOn the whole though this is an edge of the seat chase movie, set in breathtaking, if chilly, scenery in Oregon and British Columbia, and should not disappoint. Just dont expect to remember much about it in a month or two.br3 and a half stars! I rounded up to 4 for the great fight choreagraphy..
Hunt this down! August 26, 2006 DVD Fan (london, United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I watched the film recently having heard good things about it. It I did enjoy it. Not the greatest stroryline, but well acted, some great action scenes, especially the knife fights. It's very gritty and realistic. Best way to describe it in comparison is a First blood Rambo pt1 meets The Fugitive, both great films! So if you like either of those you should enjoy this. 7/10
