Amazon.co.uk Review The IAlien Quadrilogy/I is a nine-disc box set devoted to the four IAlien/I films. Although previously available on DVD as the IAlien Legacy/I, here the films have been repackaged with vastly more extras and with upgraded sound and vision. For anyone who hasn't been in hypersleep for the last 25 years this series needs no introduction, though for the first time each film now comes in both original and "Special Edition" form. p IAlien/I (1979) was so perfect it didn't need fixing, and Ridley Scott's 2003 Director's Cut is fiddling for the sake of it. Watch once then return to the majestic, perfectly paced original. Conversely the Special Edition of James Cameron's IAliens/I (1986) is the definitive version, though it's nice finally to have the theatrical cut on DVD for comparison. Most interesting is the alternative IAlien3/I (1992). This isn't a "director's cut"--David Fincher refused to have any involvement with this release--but a 1991 work-print that runs 29 minutes longer than the theatrical version, and has now been restored, remastered and finished-off with (unfortunately) cheap new CGI. Still, it's truly fascinating, offering a different insight into a flawed masterpiece. The expanded opening is visually breathtaking, the central firestorm is much longer, and a subplot involving Paul McGann's character adds considerable depth to the story. The ending is also subtly but significantly different. IAlien Resurrection/I (1997) was always a mess with a handful of brilliant scenes, and the Special Edition just makes it eight minutes longer. p BOn the DVD:/B IAlien Quadrilogy/I offers all films except IAlien3/I with DTS soundtracks, the latter having still fine Dolby Digital 5.1 presentation. All four films sound fantastic, with much low-level detail revealed for the first time. Each is anamorphically enhanced at the correct original aspect ratio, and the prints and transfers are superlative. Every film offers a commentary that lends insight into the creative process--though the Scott-only commentary and isolated music score from the first IAlien/I DVD release are missing here--and there are subtitles for hard of hearing both for the films and the commentaries. p Each movie is complemented by a separate disc packed with hours of seriously detailed documentaries (all presented at 4:3 with clips letterboxed), thousands of photos, production stills and storyboards, giving a level of inside information for the dedicated buff only surpassed by the ILord of the Rings/I extended DVD sets. A ninth DVD compiles miscellaneous material, including a Channel 4 hour-long documentary and even all the extras from the old IAlien/I laserdisc. Exhaustive hardly begins to describe the IAlien Quadrilogy/I, a set which establishes the new DVD benchmark for retrospective releases and which looks unlikely to be surpassed for some time. The ultimate 'Alien' saga box set! September 29, 2006 Siamese (Azores, Portugal) 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
This has to be one of the best DVD box sets of the past few years, ranking alongside the likes of the sublime special extended editions of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy.
br / Not only do we get the four films featuring Ripley on her eternal battle with the Alien creatures in their theatrical and special extended versions, but also the most staggering amount of extra features I've seen on DVDs until now. I would have thought that it would be very difficult to get hold of enough archival footage and other memorabilia to fill a disc of special features, especially from the first movie. Since the original 'Alien' was filmed in 1978 and released in 1979, and having read so much about studios' common practice of destroying most of the unused footage, i.e outtakes, test footage, deleted scenes and so on, I was surprised to realise that there was indeed a lot of that previously unreleased to the public.
br / The producers took advantage of every single piece of material on each one of the films they had access to to give us an unprecedented thorough view of how they were made. Other than contemporary interviews with writers, directors, producers, actors, designers, special effects wizards and many others, there are outtakes, screen tests, trims, test footage, making of featurettes, an incredible array of photographs, production drawings and conceptual designs, deleted scenes(for the first film only), audio commentaries, etc, etc.
br / I must admit that the first two movies are absolute masterpieces as far as I'm concerned, with the remaining two sequels being rather disappointing. Nevertheless, if you're a fan of Ripley and the Aliens then this is the collection you should be going after, as you won't be able to find a more complete DVD compilation on these films than this one right here!
Comprehensive. February 25, 2007 Spider Monkey (UK) 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
This boxset has such an array of extras it's difficult to know where to start. Each extra disc gives you another insight into the Alien films and philosophy. Then with subsequent viewings you can't help but see the extra details with a fresh eye. The films are great and the extras are superb. An excellent value-for-money boxset, giving you way more than many other boxsets of a similar or greater price.

At the right price its a must-have! April 17, 2006 S J Buck (Kent, UK) 25 out of 29 found this review helpful
This is a fabulous boxed set, especially if you can get it at a decent price. It is available on-line and in some shops at the moment for £17.99 which is fantastic value. Anything under £30 is still good value.
br /Alien and Aliens are already classics (as everybody knows) and merit repeated viewings.
br /The 3rd and 4th are not up to the same standard but have their moments.
br /There are 9 DVD's in total.
br /Disc 1 contains both versions of Alien + Commentaries
br /Disc 2 contains documentaries on Alien
br /Disc 3 contains both versions of Aliens + Commentaries
br /Disc 4 contains documentaries on Aliens
br /I have watched these and they are very good. Especially in relation to creating the special effects and James Cameron working in the UK at Pinewood (there were problems - indeed almost a strike!).
br /Disc 5 contains both versions of Alien3 + Commentaries
br /Disc 6 contains documentaries on Alien3
br /I have watched some of this and there is some fascinating information on the original script and director.
br /Disc 7 contains both versions of Alien Resurrection + Commentary
br /Disc 8 contains documentaries on Alien Resurrection
br /Disc 9 More Extras
br /
br /All in all a superb set to get.

IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THESE FILMS - WHY? September 14, 2007 Nevs (uk) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The original scared me as a kid and i hope to scare my own children in due course.

br /The films are a great contrast of creepy, dark corridors in the original and full guns blazing action in the first sequel, Aliens. Alien 3, set on a prison planet, returns to something like the original Alien but the Alien Resurrection (no.4) goes in a slightly different direction, but still entertaining. A mention should be made for Alien Vs Predator, which although not linked directly, is well worth a watch.
The best box set around? January 11, 2005 Adam Lea (Gloucester, UK) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Firstly this box set is not about whatching films, no, it only appears to be about that. This box set immediately gives a sense of pride to those that have just bought it and even months afterwards. This is one of those things that for a short period of time will make your life feel complete until the next big thing comes out.br Now onto the films, all of which enable you to whatch either the cinematic release (the one that people saw in the cinema) or the directors cut that has been digitally buffed up. For fans of the films (I am one) then this is a must have. I bought it almost a year ago when it was at its most expensive. However you people have the opportunity to buy the same thing at a cheaper price now. This is really an investment and a half and then a half again and then a few more. For those of you still unsure what I'm talking about (there may be some) this is the box set of all four of the Alien films; Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien 4 (Resurrection). br Special features are now common place on DVD's, however this really does set the benchmark, for each disc (film) there is another, completely filled with Special Features (Documentaries, Cast and Crew interviews, Design features etc...) making I would guess for each film an average of 8-10 hrs of Special features (maybe not quite as much but close). Then there is another disc at the very end for Special Features such as the original scripts, original story boards etc, etc... It is truly amazing. This set is worth owning for the Special Features alone.br In conclusion, out of the many Box-Sets that I have looked at (this includes the Lord of the Rings and such) yes this is the best. The films as you probably know are icons of the era, the special features are mind blowingly expansive and genuinely interesting.br Buy this set now whilst you still can, belive me it is a worthwhile investment.
