Superb Film November 19, 2007 Mr. Shaun J. Nickeas (England) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
What can I say about this film exect that its superb. The acting is 1st rate and the plot is great. Please dont get this confused with the peter benchley film and book of the same name. This is about a russian tank that gets lost in a vally with only 1 way in or out and they must fight to survive. Set during the russian\afganistan conflict, it shows the resilliance of the afgans and the taliban against russian occupation fighting a war the russians didnt and couldnt win..........any similarities to the current war we are fighting?

Out there with the best of war films May 28, 2009 John Ferngrove (Hants UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I caught this half way through on late night TV a few months back, enjoyed the little I saw of it and bought it for my son's Birthday, a fellow film buff. I've just watched the whole thing through and now I've ordered it again because it was so good I know I'm gonna want my own copy.

br /To describe something as an anti war film says nothing anymore. Few films get made these days glorify war, but this film concentrates on the more intensely personal aspects of conflict. How hatreds are bred, how bad men prosper in environments where all control is lost, how men trying to retain decency can be forced into unthinkable paths of behaviour and how lesser minds flail around just looking for a way to stay alive amid chaos.

br /This film is set in the Russian/Afghanistan war in 1981. The cinematography makes the very best of the harshly beautiful desert terrain, and its narrative also relies crucially on its geography. The film is about a Tank that gets separated from its column, after having aroused the hostility of local tribes through brutal tactics, and how retribution is bought to its crew and most of all its vicious psychotic commander. Along the way we learn a great deal about Tank warfare. The terrible power of modern tanks and also their vulnerabilities, and the intensely claustrophobic experience of tank combat.

br /I can't agree with the reviewer who felt the film was ruined by the 'background noise' of the sound track. It's an ambient electronic score by Mark Isham, whos's turning up more and more in film these days (I know him more as a straight jazz player). The score is very moody and superbly matches the eerie desert landscape. It will be a taste thing in the end, but I can't really see it annoying too many people as it is very much of an ilk with a vast number of sound tracks these days.

br /I also question that reviewer's raising of the American accents of the Russian characters? Would he have preferred they put on fake Russian accents? That would certainly have been a worse distraction for me.

br /The key thing about this film is, as with all the best war films, the tension is maintained throughout. There are various climaxes but at no point does it ever settle into a lower gear. Despite this it manages to be much more than just an action film. It is thought provoking and provides sharp emotional twists despite a straightforward narrative. This is a very fine film that I have now watched twice and certainly will watch again. It's actually more engaging and consistent than some of the better known examples of the genre.
"TANK CA BOOM!!!!" May 23, 2009 Mr. James Bond This film is outstanding the acting is superb, Mark Isham music score is exhilarating truly a genuinely captivating film a must see for all.
Enlightening September 14, 2007 Tim Reynolds (UK) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Knowing very little about the Russian/Afghan war of the 80's I really didn't know what to expect from this film. I can't actually remember how I stubbled across it but I'm very glad I did. The story revolves around a Russian Tank crew that get separated from their convey and subsequently get into a spot of bother with the Mujahidin. Although the Afghans have become public enemy number one today, they are most certainly portrayed as the oppressed good guys in The Beast. This is probably why I enjoyed this sometimes bleak film as it does give a very interesting insight into the culture of the Afghan people. Worth watching for the history lesson.
