5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and sad at the same time   May 6, 2004

This movie, based on the true life of Irish journalist for the Sunday Independent Veronica Guerin, is uplifting and sad in unison. I found myself amazed at the courage shown by this woman in facing the organized crime in Ireland, fighting to make the world a better place by exposing these people. On the other side, it is sad to know that her quest had nefarious results for her and her family. This is one of the best movies I have seen this year, and knowing that these events really happened lifts it to another level for me.pThe movie starts with the shooting of Veronica after she gets out from court where she was facing charges on twelve hundred parking violations and a couple of speeding tickets for going over one hundred miles per hour. Then, the action goes back and starts revealing how the journalist got to that point. Veronica Guerin was a journalist that felt empty when writing casual and non-critical articles, so when she is assigned to the crime section, she finds a cause she can embrace. In Ireland, the drug trade has driven crimes rates to a record high, and a myriad of youngsters are living in the streets, having only one desire...to get high. Veronica's quest consists in connecting the drugs to the crime lords and bring the organization down. To do this she starts relentlessly pursuing these dangerous people and gets her family and herself into dangerous situations. "The Monk", "The Coach" and "The General", among others, are getting nervous.pWhile watching this movie you will find yourself cheering for the heroine, and getting worried and scared for what may happen to her and her family. Cate Blanchett has a stellar performance, which makes the character even more likable. This actress focuses a good part of her time on plays, but I would really love if she decided to devote a larger part of her time to movies, which is what I usually have access to.

5 out of 5 stars Stuarts Review   December 24, 2003

A superb film, Cate Blanchett is totally convincing in the title role as a reporter investigating the drugs trade in Ireland. Gritty and highly emotional. Well worth 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Sad but true   January 21, 2004

I can clearly remember the murder of Veronica Guerin and the horror of it has never left me.brIt would have been easy to sentimentalise her life, a young mother gunned down, but the movie "Veronica Guerin" did not.It portrayed an ambitious journalist whose determination to investigate the real dangers in the Irish Republic may have led her to act wrecklessly at times.brCate Blanchett is astonishingly good in the title role, with the always excellent Ciaran Hinds giving a fine performance too.brSad it may be but "Veronica Guerin" is an important story and needs to be seen.

5 out of 5 stars Film = Top Notch. DVD = Mediocre   January 25, 2004

I don't want to bring the rating of this film down, by giving only one star but the DVD deserves no more than 1. No extra features, nothing... absolutely poor. Just not acceptable anymore. "Veronica Guerin" offers more than enough background info... pity they didn't use it.pHope for a better release in future.

5 out of 5 stars Veronica Guerin, brilliant   June 16, 2005

This is a fantastic well directed and produced film, although it does lose a little of it's impact on the small screen. I was initially apprenhensive that an Australian was cast in the lead role and had visions of a similarly dire interpretation of an Irish accent as Julia Roberts playing Kitty in Michael Collins. However, it is a credit to Cate Blanchetts excellent acting ability that she took the role seriously and gave a brilliant portrayal of the Irish Journalist. This is by no means a light hearted film but the moments of comic relief are excellently timed and necessary when dealing with the horrorific events that lead to Veronica Guerin's death. I have read about Veronica Guerin's investigations in depth and I feel credit is due to the director for not using poetic licence as excuse to make inappropiate but dramatic changes to the story.
