Amazon.co.uk Review Merchant-Ivory leave heaving corsets behind for the contemporary world of Americans in Paris in ILe Divorce/I. The day Isabel Walker (Kate Hudson) comes to visit her pregnant sister Roxy (Naomi Watts) is the day Roxy's French husband leaves her. The divorce proceedings centre around a painting, long owned by the Walkers, that the husband's family would like to claim--but their manoeuvrings are complicated when Isabel begins an affair with a diplomat (Thierry Lhermitte) who just happens to be Roxy's uncle-in-law. At its best moments, ILe Divorce/I has the feel of one of Woody Allen's serio-comic films like IHannah and Her Sisters/I, and there's a genuinely suspenseful climactic scene on the Eiffel Tower. There's also a star-studded supporting cast, including Leslie Caron, Glenn Close, Matthew Modine, Stephen Fry, Sam Waterston and Stockard Channing. --IBret Fetzer/I

I actually loved this film. If you want something fast paced and hollywood like then avoid this at all costs. It's a film that meanders along against a beautiful back drop, Paris. The other reviewers are right in that there isn't one strong linear plot, but life isn't like that and that's what it did feel like - a sneak preview into two families lives...
br /Word of warning - do switch the subtitles on unless your French is of a high standard.
For lovers of French style only November 16, 2005 Carol H. (Switzerland) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
If you are fond of linear plots in which one event leads to another and the whole leads to a more or less apparent conclusion, "Le divorce" is not likely to leave much of an impression on you. It is not even one of those typical Merchant Ivory films which hark back nostalgically to Victorian England or the times of the Raj. "Le divorce" is something like a voyeur peep into the life of two families, one upper-crust French, the other high-brow American, which are bound together by the couple whose marriage is drifting apart. The plot#x27;s dramatic flair has not been exploited enough, but as a work of art the film is delicious, especially if you like anything French: superb decors, shots of Paris, the understated stardom of a plush Herm#232;s Kelly bag and Leslie Caron#x27;s appearance as the embodiment of French chic and cartesian rationale...all these things should appeal to you. Glenn Close is also breathtaking as ever as the American writer who after many years of living in Paris has impeccably assimilated the best of both cultures. This is not a film for a rainy afternoon or for people who seek to beguile their jaded senses. It is a film for the dilettanti, the bon vivants, to be savoured fully like a vintage bordeaux.
Culture Shock February 15, 2004 DL Productions UK (Merseyside, UK) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
When I heard about Le Divorce, I was thinking "ah I bet this is going to be a movie for women", well how wrong I was. Le Divorce is quite neutral in that area, and the plot seems to be firmly on it's feet. The trailler wasn't very good either, but when you actually sit down to watch this, you see it has less Hollywood values, and more of a European feel.pNaomi Watts is Roxanne, a poet who moved to Paris to be with her husband; who's obviously not happy with Roxy, and leaves home just as soon as Isabel (Kate Hudson) arrives. But Roxanne is pregnant, and she's trying to keep everything together. Isabel on the other hand, is quite a lady, who goes around seeing two people at the same time. Roxanne and her American poet friend tell Isabel she's going to get hurt, but Isabel is only out for fun. Roxanne, on the other hand, has to put up with a divorce that she doesn't want. pHer parents come over to see what's happened, and they meet the parents of her husband, who are quite the opposite to Roxanne's parents. They don't really seem bothered about adultery, which shows the French/American divide on ideas and concepts, a thing which this film seems to heavily rely on. pThey also find out their painting; a Latour is worth a lot of money, so Roxanne's ex wants it, but it belongs to the family, so it's gets tougher for Roxy. Will she make it though?pThis isn't a bad movie, but on the other hand it isn't wonderful, and probably won't be picking up awards in Cannes. It's a pleasant tale, but it does lack substance, and the annoying flick from French to English will probably annoy anyone who's not fluent in French. The filming is good though, but nothing revolutionary, nothing special really. The acting isn't bad, Kate Hudson's French accent being better than Niomi's - but still the emotion doesn't seem to be very convincing to me. The soundtrack is very minimal, but when it does show itself - it's very contempary French music, old singers like Patrick Bruel, Johnny Halliday, Serge Gainsbourg and George Auric. Richard Robin's compositions for the movie are excellent.pGreat movie for people who love dialogue, but could have been a lot more fun.
for any one who has fallen in love with paris May 18, 2005 while this film may not provide a strong story or a laugh a minute its the type of film that could only ever happen in paris, like Paris when it sizzles staring the fabulous Audrey Hepburn the emphasis is less on the story and more on the beauty of the characters and the settings. PS a good one to watch if you've ever wanted to live in Paris as it gives a lavish insight into the decadent world of some of its inhabitants. after watching this film I had the desire to pick up a french language cd and pray that some handsome older man would buy me expensive gifts from fashion houses. it also proves that anyone can transform themselves in to a sophisticated french lady. all in all a good fun film, the ideal sunday afternoon film, ps also good if you want your lover to find out what an hermes bag looks like, then he might actually be able to get you one, as the bag plays quite a significant supporting role.
