Amazon.co.uk Review Though it bears little resemblance to the celebrated 1969 original starring Michael Caine, this 2003 remake of IThe Italian Job/I stands on its own as a caper comedy that's well above average. The title's a misnomer--this time it's actually a Los Angeles job--but the action's just as exciting as it propels a breezy tale of honour and dishonour among competing thieves. Inheriting Caine's role as ace heist-planner Charlie Croker, Mark Wahlberg plays straight-man to a well-cast team of accomplices, including Mos Def, Jason Statham and scene-stealer Seth Green in a variation of the role originally played by Noel Coward. As the daughter of Croker's ill-fated mentor (Donald Sutherland), Charlise Theron is recruited to double-cross a double-crosser (Edward Norton in oily villain mode), and once again, speedily versatile Mini Coopers (this time, the modern BMW versions) play a pivotal role in director F Gary Gray's exhilarating car-chase climax. It's perhaps the greatest product placement in movie history, and just as fun the second time around. --IJeff Shannon/I

Top Film August 6, 2004 Jilana (Northants, UK) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is not remake....brIt is entirely its own film, the makers however pay homage to the "original" in all the best ways. The minis are still the stars of the show as the getaway vehicles and the Lead character, is Charlie croker as before. The cast has some big names as well as unknowns but is so well balanced and acted that all performances are top rate. brIt is a fast paced monster of a movie centred around a heist following a double cross of the worst kind.brDon't miss it.
Roller coaster thrills but is it really an Italian Job ? April 5, 2007 Jay (Mauritius) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a great film, but i think it shouldn't have been called the Italian Job, as Italy is only featured at the beginning and at the end ( and these are quite short clips! ) Like I said, it is a good film, but should have a better name!
br /Title apart, slick editing, brilliant casting especially Statham and Ed Norton makes this film a rollercoaster experience.
An excellent remake October 10, 2006 Greg Farefield-Rose (Hertfordshire United Kingdom) 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
Like most viewers, I'm not a big fan of remakes as most second versions are a pointless and inferior modern re-telling of a period piece classic. The makers of The Italian Job were clearly aware of the pitfalls and handled them much better than most in that there are very few similarities between their film and the classic Michael Caine / Noel Coward romp. There is a thrilling climactic escape in Mini's and similar names to the lead characters but that's about all. What we have instead is an excellent slick modern heist thriller.

br /Charlie Croker (Mark Wahlberg) and his gang pull off an intricate robbery only for one of the gang Steve (Edward Norton) to turn traitor and hold up the others for the loot. Charlie's spiritual father, the veteran safecracker John Bridger (Donald Sutherland) is killed in the melee. Cue forward a year and Charlie and the others reconvene to plan their revenge. To help them, they have recruited Bridger's real daughter Stella (Charlize Theron), who has inherited her father's talents, though has previously used them for non-criminal means.

br /The viewer finds him/herself routing for these likeable "moral criminals" as they hatch a complex heist to rob the treacherous Steve who is deliciously played by Norton. The characters are well defined and played excellently in this superb film which proves that remakes can be remodelled successfully whilst staying true to the original picture.

Fantastic, an action movie with a great plot! November 9, 2007 E. Overington (Dorset, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love the original italian job movie and so was wondering how they would approach a modern remake. Well i have to say that this is NOT the italian job. that is to say it is not a remake of the original film, it is simply inspired by the original in as much as minis are used and it copies the idea of a great plot and lots of action. Other than that, there is no similarity. The plots of both movies are entirely different, the charactors are completely different and this movie stands on its own two feet as a great family action movie.

br /I would urge you to buy this at the great price ive seen it for sale at, before the shops realise what a great movie this is and put their prices up! Seriously, get some pop corn, some friends or the whole family, pull up a sofa and settle in for the ride. Action, Laughs and a great story, what more could you want?
Should not be compared to the original January 25, 2004 Martin Free (Yorkshire, UK) 10 out of 16 found this review helpful
As a confirmed Classic Mini fan (I own a '99 Rover Mini Cooper), I went to see this film expecting to be disappointed. I was wrong.pThe story line is very different from the original, with the main similarity being a car chase involving MINIs. There are passing references to the original film, but these come across as paying respectful homage.pEntertaining from start to finish, this film is well worth a watch and will be forming part of my DVD collection when it is released.
