Amazon.co.uk Review
In 1977's hit documentary, IPumping Iron/I Arnold Schwarzenegger works the crowds, plots strategies for defeating multiple opponents, shares his parents' values with the press and inspires legions of admirers with his resolute optimism about the future. And all of this long before he decided to run for governor of California. Larger than life, though not necessarily larger than his rivals for the Mr Universe and Mr Olympia bodybuilding titles (especially a young Lou Ferrigno, hot on Schwarzenegger's competitive trail but much less interesting), he still comes across, at age 28, as a consummate politician, smart, likable, and crafty about exploiting others' psychological weaknesses. pThe film still feels redundant (there's only so much beefcake the human eye will tolerate), but the emotional dramas--the unrewarded hard work, the unanswered hopes--are compelling. This 25th Anniversary edition includes a revealing 2003 interview with Schwarzenegger and a reunion of the film's bodybuilders and director. --ITom Keogh/I

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait!   March 31, 2004

I was waiting for this version to come out on Region 2 for the UK as only playback DVD's through my PS2. I found the whole 'film' great, especially the mind games between Arnie and Lou. The extras, especially Raw Iron etc. were worth the purchase price alone, with the whole DVD capturing a great mix of work outs, posing, and scripted storylines - highly motivational in my personal opinion. Never seen the VHS version, but apparently the DVD quality is vastly improved. Definitely a great purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Arnold is Numero Uno!   November 8, 2005

Pumping Iron is an exceptional #x27;docudrama,#x27;which explores the sub-culture of bodybuilding in the 1970s, long before its widespread acceptance into today#x27;s society.brYou don#x27;t have to be interested in bodybuilding to enjoy this film. brThe film isn#x27;t dominated by musclebound men training in the gym, but more the individual personalities of the characters and how they are portrayed. brThe main focus is the Mr Olympia showdown battle between the already crowned 5 times Mr Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger and the dark Prince Louie Ferrigno (The Hulk), who is looking to take the title away from Arnold.brIt#x27;s a must-have for bodybuilders or potential bodybuilders due to its inspirational qualities, but it#x27;s also a good buy for non-bodybuilding fans, who will find the story very interesting.brOne of Arnold#x27;s best!

5 out of 5 stars A new lease of life for a classic documentary.   February 3, 2004

A lot of the time extras on DVDs aren't worth looking at. Not this time. The 'making of' documentary is superb and added tremendously to my enjoyment of the original film. Even if you've watched Pumping Iron to death, it's a real pleasure to go back to it after watching the extras on the disk with a few new insights. Whenever you're having trouble motivating yourself to get down the gym stick this on. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful film   July 9, 2005

A superbly beautiful and moving docu-filmpThis film goes way beyond body-building; and as such, it should be viewed by literally everyone with an interest or lack of it for life. No interest in bodybuilding is required.pI promise you - this film is worth watching.pI find the film rather moving and ultimately very poignantpFirstly - not all men are created equal. The breath taking way in which Arnold's personality and intellect demolish the other personas in the film destroys any notion that we are equals.pSecondly - time catches up with all of us. These are men green with vitallity, unfortunately by the time it comes round to the reunion, they are shadows of their former selves. The only consolation for young people is that perhaps they are now wiser.pThirdly - the most uplifting message of the film and one people find very inspirational:brYou can make your dreams come true - but is gonna take a lot of hard graft and a bit of talent.pPractically speaking Arnold's comments on ironing out all of his weakness are very insightful - unfortunately most of us can't address weakness like Arnie.pI also like the 70s rather soft pop soundtrack.
