Amazon.co.uk Review A gut-wrenching portrait of adolescence, IThirteen/I is made all the more powerful because it was cowritten by a teenage girl, Nikki Reed, who also costars in the movie. Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood), a serious good student, finds herself needing to express her anger and resentment at her fractured family life. To rebel, she pursues a friendship with the reckless, alluring Evie (Reed), who seems to have all the cocksure freedom that Tracy desires. What follows is both harrowing and compelling: Tracy becomes enmeshed in a relationship with Evie that empowers Tracy and drags her deeper into the misery she wants to escape--and terrifies her mother (Holly Hunter), who struggles desperately to hold on to her daughter's love. IThirteen/I makes every step on this path utterly convincing, due to the vivid script, energised direction and astonishingly alive performances from Hunter, Reed and especially Wood. It's jolting, sad and mesmerising. --IBret Fetzer/I

Vivid and shocking August 6, 2004 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I saw this film at the London Film Festival where it premiered in England. It was one if not the most emotional film I have seen. The hectic hand-held camera work takes you right into the hectic frenzy of teenage life. brThe script and actors draws you into Tracy's life and her relationship with her family and Evie. Rachel Evan Wood, and Holly Hunter were simply outstanding. But it feels unfair just to mention those two. Nikki Reed, Brady Corbet, and Jeremy Sisto were exceptional.brUnlike some independant films. Thirteen does not through contriversal, shocking scenes in just for the sake of it, but to show a true portrayal of how quickly kids are growing up these days. I myself am only 19 years old and still see my friends younger brothers and sisters going through some of the things shown in this film.brWritten by a 13 Year Old Nikki Reed with first time director Catherine Hardwicke this film is a remarkable acheivment.
Masterpiece May 6, 2004 Mr. Robert Myatt 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
The story of the downward spiral of a 13 year old girl called Tracy, led astray by the 'popular' kid in school, is not shocking but a question poser because of the style that its shot in. The action is fast moving as the girls ascention into adolescance spirals out of control. The use of drugs, alcohol and sexual exploration are well placed and acted out with taste and distintive style, as not to attract the wrong kind of attention to the picture. Nicki Reed's (who plays the bad girl, Evie) story of corruption and exploitation is striking to the eye and the heart. The fact that she co-wrote the script, based on her own experiences, is mind bogling because of her tender age of 15! The eventual destrucive nature of their relationship is brilliant viewing because the acting is 1st class, led by Oscar winner Holly Hunter. A small but major part is assigned to Jeremy Sisto (Billy from Six Feet Under) as a recovering drug addict, for whom Tracy uses as a catalyst for her teenage rebellion! pAn accurate portrayel of inner city life in California, "Thirteen" allows the outside world to get a small glimpse at what impressionable teenagers have to deal with in a overly demanding society. The story also deals with betrayel by Tracy and Evie and the path friendship takes when desperation is the motivation.
mesmerised May 24, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have never seen such a powerful portrayal of adolescene and the peer pressure that accompanies it. the saddest thing is that it can happen to anyone at such an age where fitting in is everything and blocking out the troubles of life at home is the most impotant thing. The ending is only too true of what can happen to people who are caught up in such a mess. From start to finish i couldn't take my eyes off the screen as this harrowing story unfolded. Should be an eye opener to many parents out there!
Amazing August 3, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Often, films made about teenage angst run the risk of being too cheesy and do not have enough depth to them. 'Thirteen' gives a gripping insight into being a teenager and even though my teenage years were not nearly as dramatic as Tracy's, I think I and many other young women could identify with some of what she was experiencing when we were teenagers. This is what makes the film so amazingly compelling and real to life. It is not some unrealistic take on being a teenager and is a very credible film. You will want to watch it again and again!
SHOCKING!, IT MUST BE SEEN BY TEENS!. September 17, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Disturbing and Shocking one of the best films I have ever seen that educates teens. Traci (Evan Rachel Wood) is a normal girl with good behavior and is in a good relationship with her ex-alchoholic mother (Accadamy award winning Holly Hunter). All that changes when she goes off the rails and befriends Evie (Nikki Reed) who life is filled with Drugs, Sex, Shoplifting, Bodypiercing, Self Destructive Violence, Bad Behavior and pointless crime. In the twist of these things causes her to lose friends, fall out with her mother and being hated by relative whoms she loves most. This film was created by Nikki Reed's Aunt Catherine Hardwinkle because she was expieriencing these events and together decided to make this to help girls
