Amazon.co.uk Review Arm-wrestling might be far down on most viewers' list of "most cinematic sports," but Sylvester Stallone certainly goes the distance to prove the contrary in this lightweight but entertaining mid-'80s action/family feature. Stallone (who co-wrote the script with Stirling Silliphant) plays taciturn trucker Lincoln Hawk (though he's called "Hawks" by large portions of the cast), who faces two considerable challenges at once: to win the Las Vegas Arm Wrestling Championship, and to impress the son (David Mendenhall) who's been turned against him by his grandfather (Robert Loggia, snarling up a storm). Menahem Golan's direction and the soundtrack of bombastic '80s pop-rock (by Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins and others) is anything but subtle, and the host of opponents Stallone faces look like they were culled from professional wrestling (indeed, veteran grappler Terry Funk is in the cast), but Sly stalwarts and '80s action aficionados may find this rousing entertainment. The widescreen anamorphic DVD offers only the original theatrical trailer as an extra. i-- Paul Gaita/i

Over The Top Rocks! October 28, 2005 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
What a belter! Stallone plays Lincoln Hawk, a one man truck driving, arm westling machine ready to take on the world in one pump of his bicep. pHe picks up his posh, annoying son from military school and teaches him the sacred art of arm westling whilst they bond over a long truck journey...I know i've bonded with my father in the same way and i'm sure most of you reading this have too. pIn order to keep his biceps ripped Lincoln has devised an ingenious contraption in his rig that allows him and his son to build muscle whilst on the road. pHalf way through the film Lincoln's evil father in law takes Lincoln's son from him and triea to buy Lincoln off to go away. Lincoln, being the man he is, gets his own back by driving his monster rig straight through the front of evil father in laws mansion. That'll learn him!pBefore you know it we're at the annual world arm westling championships in...you guessed it...Vagas baby! Lincoln comes up against some fierce arm wrestling freaks, all of whom are slightly mental. Look out for the one that drinks car oil to give himself strenght, and one that pumps himself up by eating the end of his cigar with no visible ill effects. GRRR!!!pI won't spoil the ending, needless to say, alls well that ends well in the world of a single parent arm westling truck driver.pKeep on trucking!

stallone at his best....the film is a must for any stallone fan,as good as rocky and rambo in its own way....the film is a feel good movie and the sound track is great....if theres 1 film this year you watch, watch this one!!!!
great film, poor transfer . August 6, 2004 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This movie has always been a classic as it falls into the feel good movies of the 80's like rocky, back to the future or indiana jones. The transfer is extremely poor , i dont see the reason for that. The film is still enjoyable so dont let the poor transfer put you off its worth the buy as it has been deleted for such a long time.
Better than Rocky in many ways! June 5, 2004 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
After viewing this film, I personally felt that this was very enjoyable and you could relate to Stallone's character alot better than what you could do with Rocky.pThe soundtrack is good as well. The storyline is far better and understandable than Rocky.pStallone's character is also a bit of a loner in which the audience can sympathise alot better with.pThis is one of my all time favourite Sylvestor Stallone films and some of screenplay was also written by Stallone in which I personally feel he is a very good writer.pThis film is highly recommended.
"the world meets nobody halfway" January 16, 2005 no1filmaddict (UK) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
While many people seem to think that Sylvester Stallone is a completely rubbish actor, i personally don't think that he's quite that bad. Maybe he's not the worlds greatest actor but then again there are very few action movie stars that are particularly good at acting, as that genre does not really require it. However, if you do want a film where Stallone's acting is at its best, then i would recommend this wonderful 80's feel-good movie.pLincoln Hawk a trucker, and fantastic arm wrestler decides to make up for lost time when his dying wife asks him to pick up their twelve year old son Mike, whom he left at birth, from military school and drive him home (a couple of days drive). After a tough beginning they eventually begin to bond and Lincoln teaches him how to do weights and arm wrestle. pHowever, Mike's grandfather (Lincoln's wife's father) is determined to keep Mike away from Lincoln and offers him a bribe of a brand new truck and five hundred thousand dollars to leave the state. He refuses but leaves anyway for Vagas where the anual arm wrestling championships are being held.pStallone plays the lead role, Lincoln Hawk in one of his best performances in terms of acting so far. Some of scenes between him and David Mendenhall, who does a wonderful job of playing Mike, you can see are really heartfelt and there is a lot of emotion in both his voice and face. Susan Blakely plays Lincolns wife and Mike's mum, and Robert Loggia plays the nasty grandfather of Mike and Lincoln's father in law. Both are also good in their roles.pOverall, 'Over The Top' is wonderful 80's feel good movie that is an absolute must have for all fans of Sylvester Stallone, or if you just want to buy a good film. Unfortunately there are extras to speak of on the DVD, not even a trailer, which is slightly dissappointing as a documentary or somthing might have been nice. However, don't let this stop you buying it because it really is fantastic and will entertain you the whole time its on. And remember "the world meets nobody half way.... if you want it, you gotta take".
