Amazon.co.uk Review Quentin Tarantino came out of nowhere (i.e. a video store in Manhattan Beach, California) and turned Hollywood on its ear in 1992 with his explosive first feature, IReservoir Dogs/I. Like Tarantino's mainstream breakthrough IPulp Fiction/I, IReservoir Dogs/I has an unconventional structure, cleverly shuffling back and forth in time to reveal details about the characters, experienced criminals who know next to nothing about each other. Joe (Lawrence Tierney) has assembled them to pull off a simple heist, and has gruffly assigned them colour-coded aliases (Mr Orange, Mr Pink, Mr White) to conceal their identities even from each other. But something has gone wrong, and the plan has blown up in their faces. One by one, the surviving robbers find their way back to their prearranged warehouse hideout. There, they try to piece together the chronology of this bloody fiasco--and to identify the traitor among them who tipped off the police. Pressure mounts, blood flows, accusations and bullets fly. In the combustible atmosphere these men are forced to confront life-and-death questions of trust, loyalty, professionalism, deception and betrayal.pAs many critics have observed, it is a movie about "honor among thieves" (just as IPulp Fiction/I is about redemption, and IJackie Brown/I is about survival). Along with everything else, the movie provides a showcase for a terrific ensemble of actors: Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi, Michael Madsen, Christopher Penn and Tarantino himself, offering a fervent dissection of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" over breakfast. IReservoir Dogs/I is violent (though the violence is implied rather than explicit), clever, gabby, harrowing, funny, suspenseful and even--in the end--unexpectedly moving. (Don't forget that "Super Sounds of the Seventies" soundtrack, either.) IReservoir Dogs/I deserves just as much acclaim and attention as its follow-up, IPulp Fiction/I, would receive two years later. --IJim Emerson/I

Reservoir Dogs's final definitive version July 28, 2004 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Director: Quentin TarantinopCast: Harvey Keitel (Mr White)br Tim Roth (Mr Orange)br Michael Madsen (Mr Blonde)br Steve Buscemi (Mr Pink)pThe Film:brQuentin Tarantino's announced himself to the world with an unexpected bang in his first and still widely regarded as his best film to date. It follows a group of Diamond robbers caught up in the classic heist gone wrong scenario with the added twist of an undercover cop. Mainly shot in a deserted warehouse on a shoestring budget of just $30,000 the film begins with an introduction of the infamous colour coded cast accompanied by the cool beat of "little green bag".brAfter Mr Orange (Tim Roth) has been rushed to the rendezvous by Mr White (Harvey Keitel) in a stolen car (the owner of which shot Mr Orange), White tries to comfort Orange when a raging Mr Pink (Steve Buscemi) bursts in claiming that it was a police set-up. White, who isn't sure what to believe, calms down Pink and attempts to decipher the situation. In the ensuing tale of violence, rage and all out pandemonium unravels, stunning performances are shown from the likes of Michael Madsen, who famously and vindictively snarls the classic line "are you gonna bark all day little doggy or are you gonna bite?" not forgetting Harvey keitel who displays a brilliant show of emotion and confusion and the rest of the cast.brWhilst telling the stories of the main characters and involving the viewer in a brilliantly thought out plot, Tarantino is able to subtly place in some terrific comedy whilst sticking to the atmosphere of the film and adds to it a fantastic and along with the film, critically acclaimed and undeniably cool soundtrack featuring the brilliant "stuck in the middle with you" which Tarantino somehow manages to pull off in conjunction with Mr Blonde severing off a cops ear.br Tarantino's genius is unrivalled and on the bases of Reservoir dogs he has been able to create his own genre in which he is unchallenged. The fact that it was made on such a miniscule budget, which must have been far out grossed by the films overall takings, which mainly came from here in the UK where the films major cult following is primarily based. And this final version is without a doubt the definitive one(not to mention the cool cover and casing!)pThe Extras:brAfter numerous re releases of the 1992 classic which have sub par extras the film is finally done its total justice by a second disc which boasts several deleted scenes, a QT and Lawrence Bender commentary, A Tarantino interview and other interesting extras including the original trailers.

Reservoir Dogs, 2 disc Special Edition. Think about it. It should be in YOUR collection.br Never had a film been made quite like Reservoir Dogs when it was released in 1992. Unknown video shop worker turned Director, Quentin Tarantino propelled himself into the Hollywood stratosphere with this unique tale of pride, betrayal and friendship among gangsters. The story has now became legend: an organised jewellery heisst has gone terribly wrong, and the remaining survivors try to find who the 'rat' of the gang is. The story then goes into a series of flashbacks to each individual gangster, to inform the viewer where the betrayal originated from. What's in-between I hear you ask? Well, try ear slashing, Stealer's Wheel, hundreds of swear words(literally) and a conversation about Madonna's hit song 'Like A Virgin'.br What made Reservoir Dogs one of the most unique movies ever made was its array of emotions - its hysterically funny in many scenes, savage in others, and very touching in the conclusion for example. Like Tarantino's other films, the dialogue is really special and it transports the audience into a real-life situation which portrays real-life people. The actors are all brilliant, from Harvey Keitel to Steve Buscemi. For me, I think that Tim Roth, who plays the unfortunate Mr Orange, is the stand-out of the bunch. He was to later recieve an Oscar nomination for his role in Rob Roy, and here shows what an emerging talent he was. There is no doubt about it, all the actors give memorable performances and give the film that added class.br This 2 disc set is really the edition every Reservoir Dogs fan should buy. My favourite extra is undoubtedly the lengthy interviews for each character in the film plus Quentin Tarantino and Producer Lawrence Bender. Check out the ultra-relaxed Michael Madsen talking about his pets, and Tim Roth's night out with Quentin. For many, it is the sound and picture quality which makes this edition worth purchasing or not. Compared with earlier releases, there is not that much of a difference, but the soundtrack does blare that bit louder and crisper. I have been a keen DVD collector for quite some time, but the packaging for this 2 disc set is one of the best I have seen. You have a deluxe outer covering, and the inside folds into three, revealing the warehouse where the basis of the film is shot. There is also a collector booklet, which fans of the films will treasure.br Reservoir Dogs was Tarantino's gateway into the movie business and stands now as a 90's classic. Never has a film been deemed 'perfect', but Reservoir Dogs goes damn close. Should I buy it I hear you contemplating. You know the answer by now surely.

Reservoir DogspThe first time I watched Reservoir Dogs (RD) was as it was airing on Channel 4 for its premiere on terrestrial television. I watched the film at the end of a week that was full of controversy. Controversy all about the film. Newspapers were reaming with articles; Radios became fountains of diverse views; but, most importantly for me, the school playgrounds became an ocean of interesting arguments. brEveryone was discussing the same thing. Discussing whether or not the violence contained within the film was far too excessive or whether or not the violence in the film was necessary and indeed balanced by the film#8217;s incredible storyline. And, what a storyline!pA storyline that is so simple that when I tell it to you, you will be sure that you have heard it before. But, trust me, although you may have heard the plot before you will not have seen the plot portrayed like this. This is because Reservoir Dogs is #8220;Simple but Different#8221;.pThe Storyline:brFive criminals are brought together by a character called Joe (think comic-book character Kingpin). Joe brings these criminals together to carry out a heist. But, the heist goes terribly wrong. What could be more simple than that, right?brYes, I know you may have heard it before. But, trust me, Reservoir Dogs is Different.pDifference 1: The Time-FramebrThe heist goes wrong. You may be saying to yourself: #8216;He has just given away the ending#8217;. But, this is where you would be mistaken. The heist does go wrong. But we, the viewers, discover this well within the first ten minutes of the film. For the film starts off with the end (think #8216;Pulp Fiction#8217;, #8216;Memento#8217;, #8216;Rashomon#8217;). brPulp Fiction is credited for its unique muddled time-sequence but this style was first present in Reservoir Dogs, QT#8217;s under-rated directorial debut. In fact, Pulp-Fiction is credited with a great deal (and, rightly so) but many of the plauded techniques are just repeats of what was already tried and tested in Reservoir Dogs. Reservoir Dogs -the film that came BEFORE Pulp Fiction. pDifference 2: The DialoguebrFor instance, RD was the first film I saw where a piece of dialogue did not have a hidden agenda (i.e. it was not there to further the plot of the film). The dialogue was just there. This technique was groundbreaking in that it added an immense sense of realism for the viewer (you feel like you are right there!). For instance, the conversation pieces that take place in the cafe at the beginning of RD are hysterical; especially, the reasoning of Steve Buscemi#8217;s character on why he doesn#8217;t tip; as well as an intriguing analysis on the lyrics to a well-known Madonna Song. Indeed, these have become classics of cinema dialogue in their own right. However, is it RD that ever receives the plaudits for this technique? No. The applause is showered on RD#8217;s much more glossier bigger sister, Pulp Fiction (esp. to Vincent Vega: #8216;Do you know what they call a Big Mac in France?#8217;)pDifference 3: The Soundtrack brEveryone loves to rave on and on about the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. But, the RD soundtrack is equally superb. Soundtracks and Music play a large part in QT#8217;s films. Sometimes, their role in the film is larger than some of the actors/actresses. QT#8217;s films and his choice of music complement one another perfectly; so much so that one becomes empty without the other. A perfect example is the playing of #8216;Little Green Bag#8217; to the criminals#8217; Rat-Pack walk. brI remember, a few days after watching the film, trying to fiddle with my radio dial in order to find #8216;K-Billy#8217;s Super Sounds of the Seventies#8217;. Unfortunately, I discovered that the station does not exist! However, I did not hesitate to buy the soundtrack and continuously play #8216;Stuck In The Middle With You#8217;. A song that is impossible to forget especially because of the psychedelic performance by Michael Madsen that accompanies the scene in which the song is played.pDifference 4: The ActorsbrThere is no such thing as a mediocre actor only a mediocre performance. Mr Tarantino definitely knows how to get the best performances out of his actors (think John Travolta in Pulp Fiction). Indeed, many of the actors in Reservoir Dogs were unknowns when the film was released (apart from Harvey Keitel #8211; but, even he was far from being a household name ). However, this fact should not perturb you into thinking that the actors are untalented. Indeed, you are unlikely to come across a better performance by Michael Madsen in a long long time; Tim Roth has been unheard of since starring in Reservoir Dogs; and as always, Steve Buscemi is hilariously perfect as the hypochondriac criminal.pDifference 5: Reservoir Dogs is MemorablebrThe film has moments that will stick in your memory well after you have seen the film. A few of my favourite moments are:br#8216;The Rat-Pack walk#8217; at the beginning to the sounds of #8216;Little Green Bag#8217;br#8216;The oh-so-famous Ear scene#8217; in the middle to the sounds of #8216;Stuck In The Middle With You#8217;p#8216;The Four-way Mexican Showdown#8217; at the end to the sound of silence.pPeople tend to fall into three categories with regards to this film.p1st category = People who have seen the film and thus hold the opinion that the violence and swearing within the film is balanced by the film#8217;s storyline.p2nd category = People who are going to see the film and thus do not yet hold an opinion on the film.p3rd Category = People who have not seen the filmbrIf you are in the 2nd and 3rd category, I would sincerely urge you to watch this film. If you are still not convinced, all I can say is that the chances are that QT will be around for a long time causing controversy along the way. Why not see where it all started?pHope you found this review helpful.
A tale of dishonour among theives... March 26, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Four Perfect killers, one perfect crime, now all they have to fear is each other. Reservoir Dogs is the ultimate tale of dishonour among thieves. Six men are grouped together to pull off a diamond heist, but something goes wrong, the police somehow new about the job. Four of them survive and meet at their rendezvous in a warehouse to discuss the possibility that one of them may be an undercover cop. Reservoir Dogs is a film that delivers violence in such a way that it is fun for the characters. In one way you want to turn away from the violence portrayed on screen, however the 70's music that plays through the whole film is so happy and upbeat that you need to watch the rest of the scene. The film is set in real time, so that every minute the character experiences is a minute for you too. This is an original angle that makes Reservoir Dogs shine amongst all the gangster films of its time. As Quentin Tarantino's debut this is an excellent film that spurned off two equally good films, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown. It is obvious that Quentin Tarantino has mastered the Crime genre and being such a young director we should be able to look forward to many more.
ARE YOU GONNA BARK ALL DAY LITTLE DOGGY? July 26, 2006 sean paul mccann (ireland) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Reservoir dogs is a film that comes with a real bite, its a film that just brought the world to its knees when it was released ,seldom had an independent movie had an impact like this.Originally the film was set to be made on a budget of £30,000 but its a testament to the films sharp script that when harvey keitel happened to read it by means of an accident that he agreed to become execytive producer and threw £1.2 million at the film and helped get a cast of better known actors.
br /The plot revolves around 6 main characters who have been picked to work for nice guy eddie and joe in robbing an assignment of jewels. The 6 characters are all specialists but dont know each other and have been given alias' to protect who they really are.
br /But things dont go to plan and the whole thing fall sto pieces to put it mildly.
br /The film is largely influenced by a film called city of fire, tarantino isnt as original as some think, but what tarantino does give the film is a sense of realism, his script is just gold, the cast talk of things that we talk about,it isnt all cool dialouge that we wish we could say,the film oozes class and style, teh violence is chilling when portrayed, and with a cast who take their roles to their souls, then you have the ingredients for one of films darkest and greatest moments.
