Cate Blanchett blazes through iThe Missing/i, a new Western directed by Ron Howard (iA Beautiful Mind/i, iApollo 13/i). The camera truly loves the planes of her face; even dusty and bedraggled, she radiates star power--which is good, because iThe Missing/i needs it. When her daughter is kidnapped by renegade Indians, Maggie Gilkeson (Blanchett) is forced to turn to her estranged father (Tommy Lee Jones, iMen in Black/i, iThe Fugitive/i), a man who abandoned her as a child to join an Indian tribe. Together, they pursue a malignant brujo (or witch), who sells young girls in Mexico. iThe Missing/i features solid supporting performances from Evan Rachel Wood, Eric Schweig, Aaron Eckhart, Val Kilmer, and feisty young Jenna Boyd as Maggie's youngest daughter Dot, who refuses to be left behind. Despite the cast and some gorgeous cinematography, though, iThe Missing/i never finds its stride. i--Bret Fetzer/i

The Missing - Not to be missed. July 10, 2004 J. Glen (Scotland) 23 out of 25 found this review helpful
This is a film that uses the western genre to explore the nature of the father/daughter relationship. Both Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett give superb performances as the estranged pair. The writing and the acting in this film complement each other beautifully, and this film could well make it into the category of "The Great Western". pThis film can be watched purely as a cowboys and indians western but there is more to it than that. It has an almost elegaic quality that makes it both attractive and compelling to watch, it is full not only of action, but also has an emotional depth that strikes chords with the viewer.pIs this film worth watching? Yes it is, watch it and you will not only be entertained, you will fnd it stays with you for some time afterwards.
Powerfull Film with Amazing Acting --- The Missing May 31, 2004 18 out of 20 found this review helpful
Well what can I say. Tommy Lee Jones and Kate Blanchet providing fantastic roles once again.pThe missing is about a father (Jones) who left his daughter (Blanchet) when she was young. He then returns but is rejected by his daughter and her new family until one of Blanchet's daughters is kidnapped by a group of Indians. An Indian himself, Jones offers his help to find the girl along with his daughter and her other daughter.pThe missing has a very powerful story and is a great adventure for the whole family. Tommy Lee Jones is at his best and provides a very strong character to the storyline. Even if you don't like western set films (like me) watch this film anyway, its truly amazing and touching. The Missing has every thing that you could want in a film, a good story, good acting, good directing and some action.pWith a well thought out plot, a good cast and some brilliant acting this film provides a powerful story and a film that you can really get involved in.
One of the best action films ever made October 5, 2005 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
When I rented this film out I didn't think that it'd be the sort of thing I'd normally like, but when I watched I was grinning from ear to ear the whole time. br It is about a teenage girl (Lily) who is kidnapped by Indians and her family's journey to retrieve her. There are a few moving elements in this film, the teenage daughter's relationship with her Mother, and the Mother's relationship with her own longlost Father who had happened to arrive at the point of her granddaughter's kidnapping. Soon the three members of Lily's family (including a little girl) venture off to free her and the other girls held hostage by the Indians. br Highly recommended to those who love action adventure films with a bit of suspense, I am a horror fanatic myself so enjoying an adventure film that much is a real breakthrough for me.
Another great from Tommy Lee December 6, 2004 M. Bolch (uk) 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is a story of American Indians and a young girl that goes missing, hence the title.pTommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett and the rest of the actors and actresses work well together and perform well, a good strong storyline needs these for the story to work well!pIt is such a good film it will have you watching it again and again! (it's not just a chick flick, my husband enjoyed it too!)
Blue Duck who? January 6, 2006 Joseph Haschka (Glendale, CA USA) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
Last time I saw Tommy Lee Jones in a western, it was as Cap'n Call in the magnificent 1989 TV miniseries LONESOME DOVE. There, he and Gus (Robert Duvall) are beset with an old nemesis, the nastily evil half-breed, Blue Duck. In THE MISSING, there's Chidin, who makes Blue Duck look like a Westminster Abbey choirboy in comparison.pIt's 1885 New Mexico, and Maggie Gilkeson (Cate Blanchett) bosses a cattle ranch on the periphery of civilization. Maggie has two daughters, the teenage Lily (Evan Rachel Wood) and 10-year old Dot (Jenna Boyd). Maggie is unmarried, but is sweet on her ranch foreman, Brake. Maggie is also a country healer, and one day Samuel Jones (Tommy Lee Jones) shows up for some docterin'. Jones is Maggie's father, who deserted the family to go Indian when his daughter was very young. Now, Samuel is more an old Apache than an old White Guy, and Maggie despises him for what he did to her and Mom. But then, Lily is kidnapped and Brake tortured to death by a band of white renegades and U.S. Army Apache Scout deserters led by Chidin, a native witch doctor that's heap bad medicine personified. The marauders are snatching girls from homesteads all over the territory with the intent of selling them into slavery in Mexico. Getting no help from the local sheriff or the Army, Maggie persuades Jones to help her track her daughter and her abductors.pThis is Tommy Lee's best performance since the past FUGITIVE and his most recent release, THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA. And what can one say about Blanchett except that every role in which she appears is luminous.pPerhaps a viewer's biggest criticism of THE MISSING might be that it's beyond belief that Maggie would take Dot along on the dangerous pursuit of Chidin. By today's standards, yes, it would be. (Even taking your kid to the mall is dodgy business, what with all the prowling child predators.) However, Maggie is a tough and self-reliant woman living in perilous times. Perhaps taking Dot along on a growing-up exercise wasn't an imprudent thing, especially if Maggie knew her youngest would stubbornly follow anyway. Anyway, I didn't find that aspect of the film incredible.pBig Screen horse operas of quality are relatively rare nowadays. We are recently twice blessed - OPEN RANGE, and now THE MISSING. Stetsons off to director Ron Howard for a gritty and absorbing yarn. If nothing else, it deserves 5 stars for entertainment value.
