5 out of 5 stars A Tear Jerker   September 13, 2006

Having watched this superb film again recently, I have to say that it is a film for our times. The original version made during the mid 1950s with Deborah Kerr and Van Johnson, was made for the audience of those times. It could not be sexually explicit or emotionally charged due to the censorship laws, so much of Graham Green's original narrative was lost. However, this has now been restored for modern audiences and what a wonderful version this is. Although, some of the storyline has been changed, it does maintain the key element of the story between two lovers, Sarah Miles (played by Julianne Moore who is wonderful by the way) and Maurice Bendix (played by Ralph Fiennes). Set during World War 2, they meet at a party and develop a sexual relationship despite the fact that Sarah is married to Henry, a civil servant (played by Stephen Rea). After five years together, Sarah suddenly ends the affair without reason and two years later, they meet again. Maurice, now jealous and bitter because of the affair ending, hires a private detective to follow Sarah in an effort to solve the mystery of why the affair ended in the first place. This leads to a tragic ending, but there is also hope too for the people involved, especially for Maurice as he may have to revaluate his life and beliefs. It is a genuinely emotional drama, the sort of drama which Hollywood rarely achieves nowadays. This is left to independent film makers such as Neil Jordan who does a superb job in directing this adult drama. br / br /Enhanced by 5:1 Audio sound, and good picture detail. Also has numerous extras plus an Isolated Score for those who just want to enjoy the superb music score composed by Michael Nyman.

I have to say this is a fantastic film exuding all the love, passion, restraint and desire needed from the book. It does all of this in such a credible and sensitive manner, we can feel the pain the characters are going through without feeling the 'cheese'. Ralph and Julianned are perfect for this role. I have to say I have watched this film at least a dozen times and I love it more and more. It is a classic!

This is a real heart-rending film.. It is similar in vein to "The English Patient" (-same leading actor, too), but better (-and more succinct)!pSet in wartime London, it's the story of how one couple deals (-or doesn't) with the end of a love affair.. and the reason it ended (-great twist). pA wonderful, thought-provoking take on how two people can have very different views of other's feelings, of jealousy and of (of course, as Graham Greene was the author) Religion.pWatch and weep!!

5 out of 5 stars a clandestine adulltery in rapturous ecstasy   September 10, 2009
Dr. U. L. Khawaja (hornchurch ,london)
The movie brings themes of religion ,adultery faith and carnal love intelligently to screen without making a cliche of a melodramatic love story where a spouse cheating on her rather indifferent cold blooded bureacratic husband in a discreet affair . br /Set in the turbulent London west end in World war 2 ,the movie almost is as calm as the blitz is otherwise, and the rapture of the two lovers almost makes a perfect adaptation of the complex Graham Greene book translate spiritually on screen . br /Stephen Rea is the cuckolded husband while the two eclectic leads who are the soul of this artistic piece are the two illicit lovers played with immaculate brilliance and a profound insight by julianne moore who has never looked or acted better and ralph fiennes who is her clandestine lover in a role better acted than even english patient ,as they conduct a perilous affair while the bombs fall around them . br /The religious views are paradoxical but Neil Jordan successfully explains them in his adaptation of the graham greene book as he has the courage to discover and indulge in his own convictions to define green's paradigms . br /extremely stylish to gaze upon and even more soulful to ponder upon this is an examination of a marriage ,its flawed harmony and the final conclusion as to the fact that human infidelity is destined too, just as human matrimony and as such both are unavoidable ,yet they can be used to come to terms with our own discontent . br / br /This is a complex look by Graham Green on war and adultery and acceptance of the eventual outcome by the affected individuals which is narrated with an elite charm and panache by Neil Jordan that brings the whole thing vividly to life from the secretive lover's meetings in plush apartments to the private eye[IAN HURT] who is hired by the curiously estranged husband to follow the enchanting wife in her pursuit of true love . br / br /This makes the whole experience rather a ecclesiastical ecstasy to behold and bewilders your spirit in a bizarre yet beautifully brazen piece of literary cinema . br /A true triumph for Julianne MOORE and Neil JORDAN . br /
