Go with the flow and enjoy it February 23, 2006 Neb (London, UK) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are a rare comedy pairing. Starting out as a Spillar funnyman / fall guy to Owen#x27;s straight coolness in the superb Meet the Parents and Zoolander, in Starsky and Hutch they move up to a new level of comedic equality; with Owen playing preposterously on his good looks, and Stiller admirably wallowing in short-man syndrome. The film#x27;s plot ambles along in a turgid and graceless manner, but god it is funny. It#x27;s all down to Stiller and Owen#x27;s chemistry; and a hilarious cameo from the charismatic (and shockingly thin) Snoop Dogg, who#x27;s terrible acting just makes him all the cooler. Like all the best comedy films, repeat viewings reveal subtle jokes missed before, and others have timing and flare that make them funnier second, third and fourth time around. It doesn#x27;t pull any punches either - Owen has a threesome with Stiller#x27;s girl, a pony gets machine-gunned, there#x27;s cocaine in-jokes, and Snoop handles his weapons with a confidence that belies his real-life suspected murderer status. Whilst in a way the film itself is poor, this is all about the three leads, and is very, very funny - which is what counts.
Watch Starsky and Hutch. Do it. DO it. June 21, 2004 Victoria Craven 13 out of 17 found this review helpful
This could have all gone horribly wrong. When Hollywood gets its hands on the movie rights to a popular TV show, this is usually a good indiction of there being trouble on the horizon. Take an established comedy double act, a rapper with a penchant for faux-fur coats, and a talented director however, and you may just manage to pull off the impossible. pFor those unfamiliar with the seventies cop show, Starsky and Hutch revolves around by-the-book, leather-jacket-wearing David Starsky (played in the film by Ben Stiller) and his partner, rough diamond Ken 'Hutch' Hutchinson (Owen Wilson). The film starts out with the two being thrown together as partners and forced to overcome their differences in order to bring down ruthless drug lord Reece Feldman (Vince Vaughn). With help from their friend, the hugely entertaining yet rather dubious character of Huggy Bear (Snoop Dogg), they make time for plenty of high-speed chases, visits to wig-makers and questionable dance routines. Bear this in mind upon viewing the film: it's cheesy as hell, but so, so funny. pThe stunts in the film - particuarly those involving cars - are quite spectacular, and there is even a short section of out-takes at the end, showing how some of these stunts have gone wrong. The costumes, music, fashion, but most of all Ben Stiller's perm, all contribute towards making the viewer feel as though they have been propelled back in time to the decade of flower power. There are plenty of references to seventies technology and how ridiculous it now appears. Look out for the 'hidden' recording device worn by Huggy Bear; subtle it ain't. Talking of Mr Bear, as far as musicians-turned-actors go, the success rate has been minimal, and whilst Snoop Dogg isn't in line for any Oscars just yet, he possesses a decent acting ability all the same. It is the fantstic Stiller-Wilson partnership that makes the film however, and the two truly are superb in conveying the blooming friendship and tough life as a Bay City cop. They complement each other brilliantly, with Stiller the more serious of the pair and Wilson bringing a laid-back attittude to the film. I have viewed the film three times to date, and still find myself laughing aloud. There's bound to be a sequel in the pipeline, and I for one can't wait.
starsky hutch movie review May 6, 2004 suzanne nee (norwich, norfolk United Kingdom) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Any one that says this film is not worth watching needs a personallity transplant!! Ben Owen make a great double act, and even the "starsky strut" returned to the screen!! It was funny with a story line and huggy bear is way too cool!! Nobody touches the bear!! I was really un sure about the film thinking it would be too much a boys film!! Ive seen it twice with my hubby and cant wait to but it on dvd in July!! Its different to the original tv series as the characters seem to have swapped personalities with Starsky being the serious one and Hutch being the rogue type. If you havent seen it, WHY NOT!!! "JUST DO IT"!!!!
Excellent July 21, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I went to watch this movie with my mates, and i can honestly say it was very very funny, and some scenes were incredibly funny. i thought i had to get the DVD and am pleased to say its just as funny the first time i saw it. The DVD comes with loads of extra features including interviews, out takes, deleted scenes and a lot more. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson work great together in their all movies, and it would be great to see these two in another movie, becuase i dont think they could have picked a better partnership. this is an excellent movie of 2004 and at a great price here at amazon.
Bring on a sequel! June 11, 2004 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson return to the screen as crime busting cops Starsky and Hutch. Stiller plays David Starsky a strict, uptight detective and after going through dozens of parteners he is forced by Captain Dobey to link up with the more layed back Ken Hutchison (Wilson). They are put on a murder case and set out to solve the mystery of a washed up body. Thiseventualy leads to a meeting with Rees Phelman (Vince Vaughan) who is a cocaine dealer. The comedy is mainly based on the fashion and ideals of the 70's which in those days were cool are now seen as slightly camp. Phelman has invented a form of cocaine with no smell and is planning on making a cool $35 million out of it. After a sequence of cock ups and hillarious mishaps Starsky and Hutch eventualy sniff out phelman with the help of Huggy Bear played with a brilliant charm by Snoop Dogg.br Thisfilm has it all; action, comedy, Carmen Electra and a brilliant plot which all make for a highly enjoyable experience.
