Amazon.co.uk Review The title of iGothika/i prepares you for a spooky, atmospheric thriller with an emphasis on supernatural mystery. The best way to appreciate the movie itself is to understand that it's a waking nightmare that needn't make sense in the realm of sanity. Making a flashy Hollywood debut after his superior 2000 thriller iThe Crimson Rivers/i, French actor-director Mathieu Kassovitz pours on the dark and stormy atmosphere, trapping a competent psychologist (Halle Berry) in the prison ward where she treated inmates (including Penelope Cruz) until she was committed for killing her husband (Charles S. Dutton), who was also her boss. Did a car crash cause her to suffer ghostly delusions, or is a young girl--dead for four years--sending clues from beyond the grave? Berry has to prove her innocence while Kassovitz keeps everything--including the viewer and costar Robert Downey Jr. (as Berry's colleague)--in the dark about just where the nonsensical plot is leading. There's a better movie in here somewhere, among the catwalks and crannies of the impressive prison-castle setting, and Berry gives 100% in a performance that's consistent with the movie's overwrought tone. Attentive viewers will identify the killer early on, and the ending is anticlimactic, but iGothika/i serves up a few good shocks for ghost-story connoisseurs. --iJeff Shannon/i

Jumpy, Gripping, Trully Brilliant June 26, 2004 llxDiMxll (Keady, Armagh United Kingdom) 16 out of 23 found this review helpful
What a moviebrI went to see this purely because it was the only decent looking film on at the time. I quickly became intoxicated with its amazing storyline and superb acting.pThe story starts out with Miranda Grey (played excellently by Halle Berry) having a psychiatric session with inmate Chloe (played by Penelope Cruz) at the prison hospital that she works at. During the session, Chloe talks about the devil literally raping her, remeber that because it becomes an important fact later on. We then get a quick insight into Miranda's life. She is married to the warden Douglas Grey (Charles S. Dutton). We see her going through a small portion of her daily routine, and also see her drive home.pOn her way she encounters a strange girl standing naked in the middle of the road. Miranda swerves to avoid her, then scarmbles out of a ditch to help the poor girl, suddenly she is surround in flames and Miranda wakes up 3 days leater in a cell in the prison she used to work in.pThat is were the story starts. pFrom then we see Miranda trying to figure out who or what is haunting her every minute of everyday, or whether she is crazy. Around this time you get a good insight into how psychiatric patients are treated, and how even the sanest of people can be thought of as insane.pThe film builds up to its first twist, and then leads onto it second, more obvious twist, the ending is pretty predictable but all the same brilliant.pThis is a must see I urge everyone to see this fantastic film. For those who enjoy a good fright there are plenty of jump out your seat scenes, and for those who enjoy a good, indepth storyline it got it all, suspense, twists, the works.pIf I could I'd give this film 10 stars.

Just imagine.. you're working in a good job, you have a great husband whoyou love dearly, great work collegues, just a jolly good old lil' lifethen on your way home from one work you see a girl in the road, swerve toavoid hitting her, get out of your car to see if she's ok and she turnsinto fire and the next thing you know your in the mental institution youwork at as a patient, your collegues are injecting you and you find outyour husbands dead and you killed him with an axe and everyones sayingyour insane! Well thats what happens to the fantastic Halle Berry inGothika, who does a fabulous job I think at playing the troubled DrMiranda Grey. After she wakes up she starts seeing and hearing strangeghostly things and without giving too much away, someone or something isleading her to the real reason why this has happened to her, maybe herlife wasnt so perfect as it seemed and this happened for a reason. Withgreat acting and visual effects this film comes together to make a edgeythriller/horror which is a really good watch, if you like mystery thrillerwith a scary edge this movie is the one for you, go see it or rent it orbuy it if you want 10/10

Gothika is starts off were Halle Berry is interviewing a patient then on her way home she nearly kills a teenage girl in the middle of a road she goes to the girl and the girl just bursts in flame then you get plunged into a world of ghosts and mental prison life as she tries to find out why this ghost is giving her clues, with an ending you wouldn't expect i'd say that giving it 5 stars is not overating

Having watched this film twice since purchasing it i would say it is great!!!!pI found the story line to be interesting and keeps you fixed to the screen to see what happens next. Hallie Berry's acting in this film is totally a lot better than it was in Cat Woman!!!! The special effects (though there arn't many) are great and give a feel to this being a very good thiller.pIf you are someone who like's scary movies or like a little bit of intenseness when watching a film then this is the one for you!!!
