5 out of 5 stars MARLON BRANDO, ALL THE WAY   October 5, 2008

The Godfather I [1972] br / br /Marlon Brando is too fat, he mumbles etc.. are all, the usual quotations, about this ULTIMATE actor. When he refused his academy award for 'The Godfather', there was a big hue and cry, as if he had committed some hedious crime. But he is 'the ultimate method-acter'. In 'The Missouri Breaks, he plays a Bounty Hunter. Jack Nicholson co-stars. There is one particular scene in the film which every horse-lover will cherish. Brando pets his horse and rubbing noses with her, says,"you have the lips of cleopatra and the eyes of salome". Tell me, how many actors have so blatantly demonstrated their love of animals? Actors come and Actors go but for me there is, and will be, only 'one don'.

4 out of 5 stars Great western film   August 16, 2007

Unlike the first reviewer, i think this is one of the best westerns i have seen. It explores several themes including family loyalty, love, friendship and law and order versus criminality on the western frontier. The acting is great and all the characters have their appeal, with Tom Logans horse theif crew of Little Todd, Cal and Carry potraying the theme of friendship and lawlessness extemley well. The relationship between Tom and Jane is also an interesting sub-plot which starts off brilliantly when they first meet and go for a horseride together. br / br /Unlike spaghetti westerns, or John Wayne westerns, this film really taps into the characterisation of the frontier inhabitants. The exploration of the theme of lawlessness is fasciniating as Penn looks at it from the perspective of the law-breakers. Braxton - who is the arrogant, rich and law-abiding cattle rancher is portrayed in a negative light throughout. br / br /Brando, similar to apocalypse now, potrays an eccentric and evil character, who although he may have is good points is ultimately a 'bad guy'. br / br /My favourite aspect of the movie is the sharp dialogue between the horse-thieves and if you like westerns you will like this film a lot. br / br /To conclude, a great film, with great dialogue, with great characters! br /

4 out of 5 stars An Unusual and Entertaining Western with Prominent Actors   March 11, 2008

This is an entertaining and unusual western-style film, with notable performances from Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando; who both play ultra-quirky characters which they would not normally be associated with. br / br /It covers the local problem of horse rustling in a desolate community and the measures employed by the majority land owner to stop it. br / br /It is a simply story, well told and includes aspects of friendship, romance and violent conflict - with a dash of rye humour thrown in ! br / br /There is a lot of unpleasant behaviour in the plot and a lot of killing; not all of it unjustified.... br / br /This DVD has good picture and sound quality, although I can only speak about the Region 1 edition (which I got because it is not cut).
