5 out of 5 stars Excellent blackly comic crime caper   May 26, 2007

This forgotten gem of the eighties stars a young Alec Baldwin as a conman and thief who arrives in Miami and stirs himself up quite a bit of trouble. Mostly, he does this by charging around town in ugly shades with a gun and a stolen police badge, pretending to be a copper as a pretext for nicking stuff. br / br /Baldwin really shines in this one, reminding you of how good an actor he can be, and he's perfect as the funny and charismatic crook who you might actually like if he wasn't such a jerk to the hooker he hooks up with. Also doing some great early work here is Jennifer Jason Leigh, who is brilliant as Baldwin's girl, all sexy and dim but also incredibly sweet. Fred Ward (who gets top billing) is decent enough as the copper who wants his badge back, but he's over-acting a little too much, possibly in a doomed effort to keep up with Baldwin's scene-stealing turn. br / br /This was directed by George Armitage, who would go on to helm the excellent Grosse Point Blank, which has a similar mix of crime and black comedy. If you liked that one, or maybe you just want to see Alec Baldwin at his youthful and energetic best, Miami Blues is highly recommended.
