Ricky Gervais - Politics August 24, 2004 71 out of 85 found this review helpful
After 'Animals' Gervais said he would be doing a new stand-up show early in the new year, so it was fortunate that I stumbled across a ticket hotline website and saw that tickets were on sale. I immediately bought some and wasnt surprised to see that they sold out pretty much everywhere within a couple of days. Since the success of The Office, Gervais has been acknowledged as a brilliant British comedian but instead of being type casted as a David Brent character he's broken away from the phenomenal success of The Office and instead is making a name for himself as an ccomplished stand up comedian. This is not surprising as Gervais has a 'natural' way about him that means his jokes and stories don't seem rehearsed - they just seem to come naturally to him as if he's speaking to a friend. pPolitics opens up with a short video which sets the tone straight away - not only is it very very funny as he outlines "three political hot potatoes" on a passer-by in a wheelchair (actually played by The Office producer Ash Atalla) but the dialogue is very 'below the belt'. This isn't a problem for those who aren't easily offended- it's just Gervais's way of light-heartedly having a joke. Gervais goes on to discuss life outside of 'the office' and trouble being recognised and being called "Brent" but the bit where Gervais talks about his "favourite leaflet" had me in stitches. Not only is the leaflet funny in itself (Gervais was giggling through most of it) but he has a way of saying things and talking about things that just make them even more hysterical. I was disappointed when the show ended- I could easily have sat there all night and listened to Ricky Gervais discuss politics, and one things for sure- politics has never been so funny!
Absolutly Fantastic July 16, 2004 Denis Repard 17 out of 20 found this review helpful
Admitadly I am a Ricky Gervais fan and went there expecting to be in stitches, a late comer to the comedy scene I've found it hard to establish what makes him such a national treasure. As I watched the warm-up guy tell what were funny joke, delivered in a humourous way and made the audience laugh lightly, it always seemed as though he was trying to remember his lines and was thinking about how his jokes were coming across. As soon as Ricky Gervais came on the stage with a bottle of Grolsch and his common touch it suddenly felt as if you were with a mate at the pub. The way everytime he was going to say something outrageous (and trust me, this is NOT for the faint hearted), he squeeks or grins as if he knows what he says is extrememly controversial but is going to say it anyway just for the reaction. This innocence allows him to get away from several court cases but more importantly makes it the whole act a whole lot more genuine. Fantastic, genius at work
Simply awesome August 6, 2004 Jonny G (Maidenhead, Berkshire United Kingdom) 32 out of 42 found this review helpful
I am a massive Gervais fan. Sice first coming across the Office, Ricky Gervais has proven to be one of the leading comedians of the modern day.pI saw him perform Politics live in Oxford, and it was by far the funniest night of my life. Gervais' swagger and self belief rub off on the crowd for what was a brilliant show.pGervais fans everywhere will love this DVD, as it improves on the already brilliant Animals. If your easily offended, dont watch this. If you're not, you'll love it.
Hilarious! August 2, 2007 Stephen Cann (Maidenhead, England) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is Ricky's second live stand-up show (recorded at the Palace Theatre, London in 2004), and it's every bit as good as his first. Don't be put off by the title - Ricky doesn't bore us with predictable political postulating here.
br /
br /It's his usual mix of squirm-in-your seat, observational and goofy humor - and mentioning those unmentionable taboos that other comedians dare not enter in to!
br /
br /My favorite bit was the sketch about Humpty Dumpty - I've seen the DVD times now, and this bit still makes me laugh till I cry.
br /Also funny when he mentions his mum thinking his Che Guevara poster was a picture of Robert Lindsay!
br /But just watch it and see for yourself - a great DVD to see on a Friday night with a friend (or two) and a few drinks!
Brilliant. December 23, 2004 John Watson (Newcastle United Kingdom) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
As an avid fan of British comedy i am a massive fan of Gervais.brFrom XFM to the Eleven o'clock show then onto the Office i have followed his career and laughed with everyone else.brAnimals was his first dive into standup comedy, which was brilliant, downright hillarious. I was expecting more which Ricky delivered with Politics late this year.brAgain Politics was shocking, wrong and sick, but ultimatley hillarious!brAll the doubters of Gervais and standup comedy routine need to leave their morals at the door before watching these again, as i know you will laugh.brFor those who don't find him funny, god help you.
