5 out of 5 stars Jersey girl   December 30, 2004

I loved this film as it was very family orientated and aswell as being hillarious and sad at the same time. i would say that you could probably watch it over and over again. The little girl who played gertie was a very good actress and the apperance of Will Smith topped the film right off!!!

Unlike the mass Band-Waggon jumpers of this world, who constantly slate this movie when holding it in comparison to Kevin Smith's earlier efforts, Im a fan. I loved Clerks, Dogma, and Chasing Amy for there ascerbic humour and unique storylines, I loved Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back for being, just plain simple laugh out loud comedies. In Jersey Girl Smith made a movie thats just flat out enjoyable, and no comparison to his previous 5 should take away from that. It may not carry his usual edgy dialouge, but the whole point for me is that it doesnt need to. As far as Smith selling out to the mainstream goes, if its the movie he wanted to make then how can he be? The cast( Affleck and Carlin especially) are all excellent, The movie looks superb and it deserves far more recognition that it recieved.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Touching film   October 7, 2004

An excellent film, I can not understand why it got so slated at the American box office. There are some very touching points made in this film about how alone people feel when someone close to them dies and the responsibilities which people have to take on when someone close to you die's. Ben Affleck gives a fantastic performance and I feel that J Lo shouldn't have been in the film but hey ho life goes and they made the best of it.pALL IN ALL A EXCELLENT FILM AND A MUST BUY

4 out of 5 stars Kevin Smith becomes a Dad and grows up...   February 14, 2005

Jersey Girl flew by at my local cinema. As someone who had seen and largely enjoyed the director Kevin Smith's previous work this surprised me. pHaving now seen the film I can confirm that it merited more than one week in the smallest screen at my local multiplex. I think this film suffered for two reasons 1, It is the second outing for the pairing of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez and their 1st, Gigli, was so bad that this film was tainted by association. 2, Kevin Smith is associated with films that appeal largely to teenagers and twentysomethings. In the View Askew universe he became an unlikely icon for the film obsessed, self referential, pop-culture savvy genereation. This involved a lot of swearing and a explicit sexual discussions. There is a big audience that this reputation would put off.pNeither criticism stands up in the face of this film. Jennifer Lopez departs pretty early on and the central romantic lead of the adult narrative goes to Liv Tyler. Also Kevin Smith has moved on from Jay and Silent Bob. Those fans who adored Clerks, Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob strike back will find that this is a different type of film. In terms of Smith's previous work the greatest similarity is to Chasing Amy. It is more thoughtful, more reflective.pHaving said that this is still a comedy, albeit with sad undertones. It isn't a straightforward relaxing, cheer yourself up after a bad day, laugh a minute film. It is genuinely touching in places and truly sad in others.pThe plot is reminiscent of 90s film Jack and Sarah but with less slapstick. I enjoyed it and think it got a rough ride on its theatrical release. If you have liked Kevin Smith films before and can tolerate a film without Jay and Silent Bob then go on - give this a try. If you've been turned off Smith before and found his work too crude for your tastes then grit your teeth and give him another go - you never know you might surprise yourself.

4 out of 5 stars "You have to be the guy that gets done by six"   January 13, 2005

This is a comedy that does not present the viewer with novel ideas and that does not use innovative ways to make us laugh. But, even though the plot may be trite, the outstanding Raquel Castro, in her role of Gertie, gives a freshness to this film that makes it worth watching. This little girl captivates the hearts of the viewers, and allows us to enjoy the time spent on this otherwise average comedy.pOllie Trinke (Ben Affleck) is a successful New York publicist working for the music industry. One day he meets Gertrude (Jennifer Lopez), a serious business woman, who right away makes him fall for her. Everything happens quickly; Ollie takes Gertrude to Jersey to meet his father (George Carlin) and then asks her to marry him, getting her pregnant that same night. Things are going great, the couple is in love, they keep up with their busy lives and they are fashionably late for every event they have to participate in. Everything turns south though when Gertrude dies after an aneurysm she carried ruptures during labor.pOllie cannot deal with the situation and asks his father, Bart, to take care of the baby. But Bart is not willing to keep it up for long, and Ollie finds himself with a baby under his care and out of a job. That is when he decides to be the best father in the world, and seven years later he is working sweeping the streets of Jersey with his father and trying to get back in the world of publicity.pBesides Raquel Castro, I found the performances of George Carlin (I love this guy's humor) and Liv Tyler to be particularly good. I consider myself lucky by the fact that Tyler got the role of Maya, a graduate student who works in a video store and meets Ollie and Gertie during one of their trips for movies. This allowed Tyler to get much more screen time than Lopez gets, which I think helps the movie overall.
