Amazon.co.uk Review
A love letter to movies (and the French new wave of the 1960s in particular), Bernardo Bertolucci's IThe Dreamers/I starts with a 1968 riot outside of a Parisian movie palace then burrows into an insular love triangle. Matthew (Michael Pitt, IHedwig and the Angry Inch/I), an expatriate American student, bonds with a twin brother and sister, Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel), over their mutual love of film--they not only quote lines of dialogue, they act out small bits and challenge each other to name the cinematic source. Matthew suspects the twins of incest, but that doesn't stop him from falling into his own intimacies with Isabelle. As the threesome becomes threatened, Paris succumbs to student riots. IThe Dreamers/I aspires to be kinky, but the results are more decorative than decadent; nonetheless, the movie's lively energy recalls the careless and vital exuberance of Godard and Truffaut. --IBret Fetzer/I

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating story about intimacy   July 29, 2006

Set in Paris in the 1960s "The Dreamers" is a tale of love, intimacy and possession. An American student Matthew (Michael Pitt) meets the alluring Isabelle (Eva Green) and her equally charismatic twin brother Theo (Lewis Garrel) and their shared love of film and immediate sexual attraction brings the three together. At first Matthew is intrigued by the powerful intimacy between the twins but as time goes by and his feelings for Isabelle intensify he grows weary of what he believes to be a limiting brother-sister relationship. br / br /Whilst the student riots of 1968 is a recurring theme that eventually divides the characters, the tale could just as easily have been set in another place at another time because it's the timeless characters who make the story fascinating and entertaining. br / br /The film is deeply erotic and at times explicit but never gratuitously, with sex scenes and frequent nudity really adding to the understanding of the character relationships. br / br /The film is directed by Bernardo Bertolucci ("Besieged", "Stealing Beauty") and is based on a novel by Gilbert Adair. After watching "The Dreamers" I'm very keen to view other work by both the writer and director.

5 out of 5 stars Eva Green steals the show   January 25, 2007

This is one of the most beautiful films I have seen in years - its a love letter to Paris and more importantly the discovery of Eva Green - an actress who captivates and steals the show - she tuly is The best actress i have watched in years - every scene is cativating and you wait eagerly for her to return for her next cue. br / The story is, to, beautiful - but I cant help but feeling Michael Pitt was given to much responcability with his role - he seems to struggle at times - often making you believe he's the same character that he was in Hedwig. br / Its simply superb, nothing comes close and no-one can ever match Eva Green.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Return from Bertolucci   May 2, 2005

The movie is a wonderful artwork. Unexpected and shocking as "romantic and pure". Bertolucci is extraordinarely new though he seems returning to his own Stealing Beauty and re-visiting Last Tango in Paris! This film is a must see for all cinema lovers. It's not conventional as no movie in the history of cinema's innovation should ever be. It's outrougious, surprising and provocative. If you love world cinema then you have already seen this film otherwise, what are you waiting for??brENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional movie about a age of revolt   October 1, 2009

This film is set in Paris in the late 1960's when the streets were literally alight with revolt. Its such a charming film (and I mean that as a great compliment) which explores the relationship of twins, one male, one female with a visiting American who meet through their mutual love of film. The film makes you feel you are in the scenes, in Paris in May 1968 and the acting and direction are exceptional. br / br /The film follows the trauma of youth not wishing to fit in and follow their peers in accepting what is "normal" from their politics to their sexual behavour. Yes the film can be sensuous but I have yet to see a better directed film that reflects the intimacy rather then the sexual act. br / br /Certainly this is a film to sit down with a good glass of french read wine, close the curtains, turn off the lights, fire up a scented candle and enjoy. br /

5 out of 5 stars Seen it on TV, Watch the Video   April 30, 2008

First saw this film on TV, and you really need to buy or rent the video to see the FULL version. It was heavily cut for TV. Extra scenes are on the video, with more of Eva Green. br /An excellent film and well recommended. View the extra's first, and Directors comments, and about the film, then view the film to better br /understand the background, and appreciate the film more. br /One of the best 'french style films' for English audience.
