frothy and delightful fun February 27, 2005 Alejandra Vernon (Long Beach, California) 33 out of 36 found this review helpful
This romantic comedy may be predictable, but it's also utterly charming, cleverly written, and wonderfully acted. All the young actors in the cast are terrific, and helped by the good script, are always believable; there are no lame lapses of dialogue that come off as insincere. brKate Bosworth (seen recently as Sandra Dee in "Beyond the Sea"), is beautiful and sweet as Rosalee, a cashier at the Piggly Wiggly supermarket, who wins a date with movie star Tad Hamilton; Tad's hilarious management team (Nathan Lane as Richard Levy the Driven, and Sean Hayes as Richard Levy the Shameless), in order to rehabilitate their client's shoddy image invent a "charity date" scheme, never thinking that Tad will actually fall for the girl, which he does, creating a love triangle with Piggly Wiggly's store manager, who is madly but secretly in love with Rosalee. pTopher Grace shines as Pete the supermarket manager, as he tries to compete with the smile and abs of movie hunk Tad (perfectly played by Josh Duhamel). His comedic timing is marvelous, and he has a "lovability factor" that reminds me of John Cusack's Lloyd Dobler in that other romantic gem, "Say Anything". brAlso good in the cast is the very funny Ginnifer Goodwin as Rosalee's best friend, and Kathryn Hahn as Angelica the Bartender. pThe above average script was written by Victor Levin, Robert Luketic did the well paced direction, and it has a pleasant (meaning nothing overtly annoyed me) contemporary soundtrack with songs like Liz Phair's "Why Can't I ?" and John Mayer's "Back to You". There are scenes that have laugh-out-loud humor, and a lovely sappy ending that will bring tears to the eyes of those with sentimental hearts. brTotal running time 95 minutes.
The Marmite Film November 5, 2007 M. R. Jones (Plymouth, UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a film you either LOVE or HATE.
br /Now, I personally enjoyed the film but I admit I did have to look through its faults and watch with an open mind. Some of the characters are anoying at times. Some are underused. Some are too over the top. But if you look past this it is actually quite a good film.
br /And its a shame that its been blacklisted as another teen comedy. Its not, its a romantic comedy that isn't afraid to try to be funny.
br /Its a good price, and it will make you laugh with jokes that aren't just aimed at teens.
br /The cast works well together with some good turns by Nathan Lane and Sean Hayes.
br /Overall a good movie.
win a date with tad hamilon! by amy a February 16, 2006 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
this may be predictable but its a sweet romantic comedy movie. its easy to understand and suitable for a child to watch. This movie isn#x27;t bad and can br a good laugh.
Surprisingly good... February 11, 2009 tiggrie I was expecting this film to be appalling - the whole premise sounds utterly cringeworthy, for starters.
br /
br /However, I was pleasantly surprised.
br /
br /This is not a deep movie, not something you will be mulling over weeks later, but it doesn't pretend to be. However, light and fluffy as it is, it has something to say for itself about the nature of celebrity, the nature of love, coming of age, and all that jazz. It's fluff, but it is remotely thoughtful fluff, which can't be said for plenty of films that are intended to be a good deal deeper and more mature.
br /
br /Kate Bosworth is genuinely sweet (although verging on saccharine sometimes, and I can see why people might find her annoying), Josh Dudamel surprisingly funny and wry (and his sidekicks are hilarious - actually, all the supporting roles are pretty strong). Ginnifer Goodwin provides a very entertaining comedy turn as Bosworth's best bud, who is a little crazed and off balance: lots of fun.
br /
br /Star of the show, though, has to be Topher Grace, whose unassuming Pete is simply adorable. He has most of the best lines, and delivers them with both humour and a touching pathos. Anyone who fails to giggle at him yelling "Guard your carnal treasure!" through the gate at the airport needs to get a sense of humour, and the whole "you have 6 smiles" is very cute.
br /
br /On the whole, no, this is not a great movie, a deep movie, a movie that will win oscars. But the term "feel good" could have been created for it, and if you just want a movie to make you sigh, smile, and feel good about the world for ninety minutes, this is the one for you. Suspend your inner cynic for an hour and a half, and... enjoy.
a humorous love story with two men fighting for the same woman June 4, 2008 dan the fan (england,uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a humorous film that starts well, gets a little dull and then becomes really good for the last 30 minutes or so.Beautiful people in beautiful locations (in Virginia) and some great acting from Topher Grace as Pete the guy who's grown up with Rosalee (Kate Bosworth)over 22 years and secretly wants her as his girlfriend but finds that she's already fallen for the film star Tad Hamilton (Josh Duhamel, who you may have seen as Danny in the tv series Las Vegas). This film is called Win A Date With Tad Hamilton but Kate Bosworth looks so nice that most male viewers will wish they had won a date with her (her best film is Blue Crush - a surfing movie which is well worth seeing for the outstanding photography of the ocean).
