5 out of 5 stars UNDERRATED THRILLER   February 7, 2009
Looking for great things (London UK)

I thought this was one of the most original and enjoyable detective thrillers I have watched for a long time and was quite surprised after reading the poor reviews. Ashley Judd, Andy Garcia and Samuel L. Jackson all put in the fine performances you would expect from three great actors. The tension built between all three characters was fabulous and some good performances from the supporting cast. The atmosphere of the famous Bay area location of San Francisco was well shot, almost reminiscent of the old Streets of San Francisco and Macmillan and Wife (but I am showing my age here!) but with a much more interesting plot and better acting. I would highly recommend this film.

3 out of 5 stars Tepid middle of the road thriller that didn't have to be middle of the road   February 17, 2008
BS on parade

*SPOILERS CONTAINED IN THIS REVIEW* br /Ashley Judd is the queen of interesting high concept stories that are rendered bland and toothless. Double Jeopardy should have been one of the greatest movies ever made, but it was a boring dud because it shied away from the moral darkness of the story. The same thing has happened to this film in my opinion. br / br /The movie starts pretty poorly. It feels fake and contrived. I just got the feeling that it wasn't clicking, wasn't working. br / br /Then the plot kicks in and it was quite interesting. It was more of a psychological drama than I expected as the lead character keeps blacking out, to then have to investigate murders the next day of men she had recently slept with. Is she a serial killer? br / br /Then the solution to the mystery starts to get unravelled and the film goes in the toilet. It was predictable that the lead actress was not going to be the killer. So the whole psychological psycho-sexual side of the story was always going to be a bit of a red herring, but the direction the film goes in makes it completely redundant. I also felt that the real killer's motives were sketchy at best (he/she is more of a mass murderer rather than a serial killer in my opinion, which means the film really isn't part of the sub-genre it says it is). br / br /If the film had some balls and followed up on Ashley Judd being a killer then I would probably have liked the movie. As it is, I thought it was a pleasant enough time waster. The film during its darker moments reminded me slightly of an Al Pacino movie called Cruising, which I'm very fond of. If you want to see a more challenging version of this film then you might want to see it as Pacino plays a cop who may, or may not, become the killer he's searching for. br / br /The cartoon Family Guy once showed a cinema with a film called "I'm Sleeping With Someone At Paramount" Starring Ashley Judd. I always thought that was spot on as she's one of the most who-cares stars around. br / br /I've given the film three stars as it was enjoyable enough, but I don't recommend it. br / br /I should also mention a film called Taking Lives starring Angelina Jolie. These two films were released at the same time and have some obvious similarities. Taking Lives is the better film (although it's not a good film) and it's a proper serial killer on the loose film, which Twisted really isn't.

2 out of 5 stars Got Better Near The End!   February 17, 2005

The beginning of this film was rather boring but seemed to get a bit more interesting right near the end where this film earns an extra star!brThe acting was good from all the main characters and the storyline was more orginal than I had first expected. pOnly watch if you're a fan of detective films otherwise I wouldn't bother!!

1 out of 5 stars not great   December 12, 2004

I was looking forward to watching this film, seeing as how Samuel L. Jackson stars in it, and as he's my favourite actor I assumed it would be awesome! Unfortunateley it wasn't that great. The basic storyline is fairly original, and the acting was quite good from all the main actors, but Ashley Judds character is so annoying and stupid that I found myself wanting to turn it off halfway through. There are a few twists, and a good ending but I would avoid it unless you're a huge fan of one of the main actors and want to see it for the sake of it.

1 out of 5 stars If only it were possible to give no stars!   August 29, 2009

If someone pays you to watch this, then you've still been overcharged! br / br /Given the cast, I expected a lot more but the plot is risable, the characterisations laughable, and the only way the dialogue could get any more wooden is if it had been carved from a tree! Beyond the general awfulness of it, it's impossible to really explain what makes this so very poor without giving away the conclusion, such as it is (though anyone who isn't actually asleep will have figured it out almost from the beginning). Believe me though, it really isn't worth hanging out either to discover it, or to find out if you were right! br / br /Ashley Judd appears to have taken too many lessons in 'face acting', which, rather than conveying the confusion/anger blah blah blah she is supposed to be feeling, instead has the unfortunate effect of making her look like she is competing in a gurning competition throughout, and there is absolutely nothing in the character or the story itself which give the slightest clue as to why she is apparently so incredibly desirable to so many people. Rather, she is an exceptionally irritating and unconvincing character. However, she is not alone in that: all of the characters behave in the most ridiculously implausible way throughout, and not a single one of them is even remotely likeable. Even Samuel L. Jackson manages to deliver an utterly unconvincing performance as an utterly unconvincing character - though really, none of the actors can really be blamed for that as trying to extract anything worthwhile from this dross, must have been like trying to knit fog! br / br /Really, don't waste your time. If you can't find a decent thriller and want to watch a pointlessly bad one instead, there are hundreds out there and bad as they are, most of them will still be better than this. br / br / br /
