5 out of 5 stars It's the way the Coens wanted it...   July 6, 2006

Even if it's light on extras, this is obviously a fine boxset... my reason for adding a review is that an earlier one queried the cuts to "Blood Simple". I feel I can clarify this issue, having researched it when writing a book on the Coens. This version was prepared by the Coens themselves in 1998, as they felt the original was not very well edited. In the process, they elected to tighten the film up, losing a few minutes of footage. So doen't worry, it's not some studio-butchered version, but the Coens' preferred cut.

5 out of 5 stars About time!   November 1, 2004

Is this to be believed? After years of waiting and months of internet searching, both Barton Fink and Hudsucker Proxy are coming to Region 2 DVD?! I don't believe it! All four films in the set are in fact excellent, and let's hope that they've chosen Lebowski and B. simple because their initial releases were pretty much vanilla in terms of special features, and they intend to include newly added extras to the discs.pI've seen all four films, many times, and each one is an example of supreme script writing, expert directing, and imaginative story telling. brBuy and you won't be disappointed. I don't know how many times I've seen the Big Lebowski, because it's one of those films that gets funnier every time you see it. Several times I've been places and met new people, and one thing we almost always have in common is a high regard for the film. Hudsucker Proxy would have to be the second ranking, in my opinion, becuase its simpy enjoyable again and again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Blood Simple transfer   February 28, 2009

This is an excellent transfer of Blood Simple despite the 3 minutes cuts. I previously bought this film (1 Jan 2001 release) as it is one of my favourite Coen Brothers films and was very disappointed with the transfer to DVD. The print was terrible quality and the colours were washed out and the dark scenes (there are alot in this film) were very grainy. This new transfer of this excellent film in The Coen Brothers Collection is first rate, like a new film. The colours are vibrate, no more grain or scratches and it looks great on my 46inch TV. If you love Blood Simple then its worth buying this collection just for this version's print quality.

5 out of 5 stars CRAZY GOOD!   May 28, 2007

This is a very well priced boxset, with three excellent films, and one slightly under-par (The Hudsucker Proxy). br / br /THE HUDSUCKER PROXY (Co-written by Sam Raimi) is pleasant enough in a whimsical way - in 'It's a Wonderful Life' type of way - but lacks the darker punch of the Coen's more mature work - as represented in this set. There are no extras on this disc. br / br /THE BIG LEBOWSKI - also lacking extras - is a tour-de-force of surreal imagery, and serendipitous plot turns. Jeff Bridges is excellent in the main role - as laid-back drifter 'The Dude' - with a plethora of amazing supporting actors: from Coen favourites Steve Buscemi, John Goodman, John Turturro, and including Sam Elliot, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Peter Stormare, David Thewlis. A film that grows and grows the more it is watched. br / br /BARTON FINK is an amazing film, with key performances from John Turturro and John Goodman, in a tale of writers block and murder. Also supporting are Judy Davis, John Mahoney, Jon Polito, Michael Learner, Tony Shalhoub and Steve Buscemi - all on fine form. The extras includes a Stills gallery, and 8 'Deleted scenes' (which are essentially just longer versions of the scenes in the film, marginally different (not better)). br / br /BLOOD SIMPLE, is an amazing debut film, full of some of the darkest (and least humorous) twists that the Coen's have ever filmed. The extra consists of a 'mock' tongue-in-cheek commentary by a British 'ex-pat' film restorer, called Kenneth Learing. He comments on this 'bastardized' version of Blood Simple, as lacking its original cold war subplot set in Bulgaria! br / He also makes observations on the film (describing the Coens as now being senile, bloated and drooling), including their use of a rug motif in the film ("they do like their rugs!"), and offering other tid-bits about ceramic walruses, inverted actors, animatronic dogs, trained birds, and digitally animated flies. It's a humorous commentary, totally devoid of fact, and absolutely rivetting (in a cringe-worthy type of way).

5 out of 5 stars Well of course I'm giving it 5 stars!!!   December 2, 2004

At Last. I'm so glad someone has had the good sense to release these wonderfully funny films in the UK. Also good to see that they have chosen the lesser known (perhaps) and less obtainable Coen classics rather than the more obvious and more available ones - such as 'Fargo', 'Raising Arizona', and the more recent ones like 'O Brother Where Art Thou' and 'The Man who wasn't there'. Watching Jeff Bridges (Dude) in 'The Big L' is a treat to behold and I never tire of it. I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that some nice person might give me this for xmas... if not, then I guess I will have to buy it. But between this and the Series 1-3 of Seinfeld also released,I can see my bank account dwindling...pI confess that I DO buy DVDs from other countries as I have a multi-region (cheap) player, and have lots of Region 1 and 4 especially as I am Australian and there are so many Australian releases that you just don't get here. They are very much available in Oz (obviously!) but surprising very available in the States (must be the Aussie popularity over there?) But, it just means that I can't lend them to friends as they don't have multi-region players - despite them all being bought in the same shop (I guess I just got lucky).pAnyway back to the review...brBuy this collection. You won't be disappointed. The films are very funny and very clever. I will obtain it one way or other even if I do have to buy it myself, even though I do have some of them in other formats, because like the other reviewer, I'm hoping for some extra features. Don't forget - buy now! And bye now!
