Amazon.co.uk Review
An absolute stunner of a movie, IMemento/I combines a bold, mind-bending script with compelling action and virtuoso performances. Guy Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, hunting down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The problem is that "the incident" that robbed Leonard of his wife also stole his ability to make new memories. Unable to retain a location, a face, or a new clue on his own, Leonard continues his search with the help of notes, Polaroids, and even homemade tattoos for vital information. Because of his condition, Leonard essentially lives his life in short, present-tense segments, with no clear idea of what's just happened to him. That's where IMemento/I gets really interesting; the story begins at the end, and the movie jumps backward in 10-minute segments. The suspense of the movie lies not in discovering what happens, but in finding out why it happened. Amazingly, the movie achieves edge-of-your-seat excitement even as it moves backward in time! , and it keeps the mind hopping as cause and effect are pieced together.p Pearce captures Leonard perfectly, conveying both the tragic romance of his quest and his wry humour in dealing with his condition. He is bolstered by several excellent supporting players including Carrie-Anne Moss, and the movie is all but stolen by Moss' fellow IMatrix/I co-star Joe Pantoliano, who delivers an amazing performance as Teddy, the guy who may or may not be on his side. IMemento/I has an intriguing structure and even meditations on the nature of perception and meaning of life if you go looking for them, but it also functions just as well as a completely absorbing thriller. It's rare to find a movie this exciting with so much intelligence behind it. --IAli Davis, Amazon.com/I PBOn the DVD:/b this amazing movie looks crisp and clean in a good anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) picture accompanied by Dolby 5.1 sound. The menu is almost as baffling as the movie itself, but once you master the navigation you'll find interviews, biographies, a tattoo picture gallery and the shooting script among other extras. Most mind-boggling of all, however, is the "Memento Mori" option in the special features menu, which allows you to play a specially re-edited version of the movie in chronological order, beginning with the end credits running backwards! --IMark Walker/I

5 out of 5 stars Memorable   January 13, 2005

Christopher Nolan's 'Memento' is an unusual, extremely innovative and most importantly brilliant piece of filmmaking. Guy Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, a man left incapable of forming new memories due to brain damage suffered following an attack in his home. The attack also left his wife 'dead' and this inspires Leonards motivation to live - to hunt down and kill the people responsible.pBecause of Leonards condition, he is forced to make notes throughout his investigation in the form of tatoos, journal entries and notes on the back of photographs. As the film progresses, it becomes apparent that Leonard is facing a uphill battle to acheive his goals and is an easy target for those who wish to manipulate him.pThe supporting cast are also excellent - Carrie Ann Moss as Natalie, a female Leonard befriends and Joe Pantoliano as Leonards friend Teddy. For many, it may not be a particularly easy movie to view due to the order that events are sequenced in the film - Leonards phone conversation is placed in between the scenes of the film which run in reverse. However, a feature on the dvd is a special edit of the film which runs in chronological order.pOne of the most original and best films of the decade so far which gets better with repeated viewing (the ending will definitely leave you thinking). Memorable and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Sooooo glad I was recommended this film   April 13, 2005

This film was recommended to me by one of my students (thanks Jared) and I was hooked straight away. brIt isn't a film to watch if you are feeling drowsy, but if you are wide awake and sober you will find it exhilarating. It has a comic element as you get engrossed in the confusion of the protagonist, but it is basically tragic - like laughing at someone falling over. brI have now watched it three times and think I have mapped out the whole plot in my mind - this is a compliment, how great to find a film you can watch several times and still find things to exercise the mind. brIf you like puzzles, detective stories, drama and something truly original, you'll love it. I can't recommend it enough.

Can't say enough of this film so won't! Quite simply the best and most intelligent film ever made. If you haven't seen it yet I pity you, yet at the same time envy you - for you've still got this to look forward to. Buy, beg, steal or borrow...just watch it ASAP.

5 out of 5 stars "Don#x27;t believe his lies "   December 15, 2005

"Memento" is a film which requires several viewings to appreciate it properly. It has a reverse narrative a la "Mulholland Drive" and "Irreversible" (it probably inspired both of them) and it is gripping from start to finish. The film is about Lenny (Guy Pearce) ,who has been suffering from severe short term memory loss since the rape and murder of his wife. He can recall the details of his life up until this incident, but nothing since it; his memories of people and places fade away in seconds, like the proverbial goldfish in a bowl. As he tries to hunt down his wife#x27;s killer , he uses Polaroids, Tattoos and Post-Its to remember key facts and people, but his condition leaves him open to deception and manipulation. The plot is complex and intelligent, the acting excellent and the reverse narrative conveys the confusion and uncertainty of Lenny#x27;s condition perfectly. A memorable film.

5 out of 5 stars Seem to be errors with Amazon#x27;s product description   December 6, 2005

Great film, I agree with other reviewers.pReason for this message is to point out that you may not receive exactly what Amazon describe.pI clicked on this #x27;Special Edition#x27; version and noted that it was a 3-disc edition. I ordered it and received a single disc whose cover made no mention whatsoever of it being a #x27;special edition#x27;, BUT all nine extra features were featured (this includes #x27;Memento Mori#x27;) and the product code number matched the one listed by Amazon.pThis is VERY confusing. However, it does look as if the single disc contains everything. Fortunately, I used an outstanding affiliate seller (#x27;Illuminate#x27;) and between us we quickly resolved what appeared to be a problem.pSo - if you order this version and expect 3 discs, that may not be what you actually receive.
