Well worth the wait! September 18, 2004 M. L. George 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I never managed to see this at the cinema and as a fan of Jackass, I was intrigued as to how Johnny Knoxville could pull off a leading role in a film. I wasn't disappointed. He is a superb actor, which, I have to admit, really suprised me (his roles in Men in Black II and Big Trouble didn't really give much of an indication to his talents). The chemistry between him and Michael Shannon who plays Larry is excellent and the two of them are the best things in the movie. Even though this is a rather bastardized telling of Phil Kaufman making good on his promise to Gram Parsons to burn his body in the desert, I think that the spirit of the occassion is quite obvious, as is the friendship that the two of them shared. If there has to be a downside, it's Christina Applegate's character who really began to get on my nerves after a while, but maybe that was the point of her! People should definitely seek this film out. It certainly deserves to have a bigger audience than it has. And the music in it is great too!
I watched this film at the London Film Festival September 7, 2004 Melanie (UK) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
It's witty, funny and therefore probably one of those that gain cult status in a few years.pWatching it at the festival added an extra charme to it as the director held a introduction speech. When the closing credits came up, people were clapping.pWell, I reckon that this won't be everybody's darling - but it is definately worth people's attention. :)
This is a terrific movie! September 20, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This film rocks!pIt's ostensibly the story (based on truth) of a man who steals his best friend's body to fulfil a pact that they'd made to look after each other even in death. Tie that together with the fact that it stars Johnny 'Jackass' Knoxville, and you've got a knockabout bodysnatch caper, right?pWell, no. 'Grand Theft Parsons' is a touching, funny, heartfelt movie about honour, decency and responsibility, and it got a ten minute standing ovation at the London Film Festival when I saw it.pI think it's great, and I can recommend it without reservation.
highly recommended September 13, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Its a real shame that this film wasn't given a wider distribution when it was released on film. Its actually a well-written, funny and really rather touching look at a classic rock story - the stealing and subsequent burning of legendary country rocker and ex-Byrds man Gram Parsons'dead body by his road manager and friend Phil Kaufman. And so what if this retelling doesn't stick exactly to what really happened - if the real Phil Kaufman didn't care, why should you? pJohnny Knoxville as Phil proves himself to be a real sensitive actor type, proving there is life after Jackass. Michael Shannon almost outshines him though, playing the owner of the characterful hearse Bernice. He walks a very clever line throughout between pathos and stoner hilarity and gets it spot on. pThis film is a must see for fans of Gram, fans of Johnny and anyone at all who enjoys movies about music. In short - a funny, sweet film with some surprisingly good acting and featuring some really good music, and its well worth buying on DVD. If I've got one tiny criticism it would be that there's not quite enough of the man himself in the soundtrack.
A lovely film September 14, 2004 Carole Lee (UK) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I liked this film very much. pIt is the (true?) story of a man who steals his friend's body in order to keep his word to him. He has promised to cremate his friend in the desert, and nothing is going to stand in his way.pThis is going to be a cult movie, and it is terrific fun from beginning to end. But it is also a touching and heartfelt story about responsibility and loyalty, and is a nice combination of comedy, road movie, drama, and buddy movie.
