Amazon.co.uk Review
How's this for impressive trivia: IDodgeball/I faced off against IThe Terminal/I in opening-weekend competition, and 29-year-old writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber aced Steven Spielberg by a score of $30 to $18.7 in US box-office millions. That's no mean feat for a newcomer, but Thurber's lowbrow script and rapid-fire direction--along with a sublime cast of screen comedians--proved to be just what moviegoers were ravenous for: a consistently hilarious, patently formulaic romp in which the underdog owner of Average Joe's Gym (Vince Vaughan) faces foreclosure unless he can raise $50,000 in 30 days. The solution: A dodgeball tournament offering $50K to the winners, in which Vaughan and his nerdy clientele team up against the preening, abhorrently narcissistic owner (Ben Stiller) of Globo Gym, who's threatening a buy-out. That's it for story; any 5-year-old could follow it with brainpower to spare. But Thurber, Vaughan, Stiller, and their well-cast costars (including Stiller's off-screen wife, Christine Taylor) keep the big laughs coming for 96 nonsensical minutes. With spot-on cameos by champion bicyclist Lance Armstrong, David Hasselhoff, Hank Azaria, Chuck Norris, and William Shatner, and a crudely amusing coda for those who watch past the credits, IDodgeball/I is no masterpiece, but you can bet Spielberg was unexpectedly humbled by its popular appeal. I--Jeff Shannon/I

5 out of 5 stars A sport of Violence so obviously very FUNNY!   February 2, 2005

Dodgeball is silly. It is mad. It is mindless...brBut it is also increadably entertaining and side-splittingly funny.brOne of those movies where you can have an ultimately relaxing viewing.pThe underdogs are the guys at Average Joe's Gym, where owner Peter La Fleur (Vince Vaughn) takes a low-key approach to the health and physical fitness of his loyal and eccentric members. This is in stark contrast to the high intensity environment across the street at Globo Gym, where White Goodman (Ben Stiller) has made narcissism an art form. La Fleur is informed by attorney Kate Veatch (Christine Taylor) that he has 30 days to come up with $50,000 or lose his gym to (wait for it) Goodman.brIt looks like all is lost until the gang at Average Joe's Gym discover that the American Dodgeball Association of America is having its national tournament and the winning teams gets (wait for it) $50,000. pAnd the perfect partner for this movie would be the Anchorman!

5 out of 5 stars Grabs you by the balls!!!   January 14, 2005

With the laughs in the cinema at the moment mainly coming from bad one liners in poor action films any person with some sense or simply an understanding of what's funny can see there is a gap in the Hollywood market for a shinning red ball shaped gem in the name of Dodgeball. Ben Stiller in arguably one of his best roles sends jokes at you as hard as the dodgeballs themselves and yes they hit you right in the ribs. Ben Stiller isn't alone on this war on bad comedy though, Vince Vaughn is by his side as a great straight man for Stiller especially in the great scene with multiple double negatives in the bar. p The film does fit in a story amid the jokes, Ben Stiller plays White Goodman a fitness freak that owns a nearby gym part of a huge fitness franchise which boasts the phrase 'We're better than you, and we know it' he wants to take over Peter LaFleur's (Vince Vaughn) gym 'Average Joes' to stop this LaFleur and his band of less than average Joes must raise $50,000 to pay of various debts and save their much loved gym. Obviously to get this insane amount of money in such a small space of time, the group come up with the clear answer of entering a Las Vegas dogeball tournament which gives the champions of the event $50,000.p This striking piece if comic genius really knows when to make you laugh and well when to make you laugh, and fantastic film that really teaches the viewer to "grab life by the ball".

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!   January 30, 2005

I went to see this at the cinema and was laughing my head off along with everybody else in the place. A film not to be taken seriously i'll admit, but that doesn't mean it isn't fantastic!! One question though; Where was Owen Wilson?????

5 out of 5 stars Bonkers!!   December 12, 2004

The most stupid but funniest film of the year!!! I saw this in the cinema and nearly fell off my chair with laughter.pWhen Peter La Fleur (Vince Vaughn) gets a visit from White Goodman's accountant (Christine Taylor) that his gym, Average Joe's, is in debt and can only stay open if payed $50,000; he and his colleagues who go to his gym try and work out ways to make money. Eventually they find The National DodgeBall games in Las Vegas has a winning fee of $50,000! So they enter and just get into the games after the girls team they play get disqualified.pNow White Goodman (Ben Stiller), who owns nextdoor's Globo gym worth $4,000,000 spies on them and finds out about what they are are going to do. So naturally he puts together the toughest team to kick Average Joe's ass and if to win demolish Average Joe's. Now it is time to sit back and enjoy some hilarious scenes.pFull of some very painful moments and some rather disturbing lines in the script but good acting altogether, it is a film that you should not miss! Ben Stiller delivers brilliant moments and is an executive producer of the film so he basically helped to make the film even better than it already is!pMust buy this film, probably full of deleted scenes that probably make the DVD a 15 appossed to a 12!!! But not the kind of film your GrandParents would enjoy, but still brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Completely silly but VERY funny.   February 10, 2005

I was genuinely surprised by how funny I found this film. I watched it with my mum and boyfriend and none of us could stop laughing. In fact, just remembering bits of the film had us in hysterics ages after we stopped watching it. Be aware that it is completely stupid but that is a big part of why it is so damn funny. It just DOESN'T take itself seriously. And neither should anyone watching it.
