4 out of 5 stars Above average thriller   March 22, 2009
Lyn (Melbourne Australia)
Priyanka Chopra plays a gold-digging, manipulative she-wolf of a woman. Without giving the whole plot away, she sets her sights on Akshay Kumar who is married to legally-trained Kareena Kapoor. He refuses her advances and she accuses him of attempted rape and he is asked to resign his job. There is then a court case (which the wife takes over) where he tries to clear his name. The social issue also looked at here is the sexual harassment issue (Priyanka is Akshay's boss). This is usually a woman accusing a man and the tables are turned to widen the debate. br /This movie was high quality acting by these 3 actors as well as their supports. br /Priyanka is chillingly creepy as the beautiful manipulator- showing that her acting skills may not have been used to best advantage previously. Akshay beautifully pitches his role in a slightly understated way and also did an impressive and very watchable job. br /While Kareena's role is slightly more minor she is strong and does well with her part too. br /The music is a little ho-hum but fine. The cinematography and scripting are good. The sub-titles slipped here and there - most notable at a few points where the actors broke into English and the sub-title translated this into English of the opposite meaning! br /This isn't a violent movie. It has some romance and some sexual edginess in a few scenes but this is not the main feature and is very much appropriate to the plot. The court case doesn't go on for too long, is well-scripted and is sharply played out by the barristers. br /I thought this was a quietly solid and impressive little movie. It tends to score above average in reviews elsewhere on the Net. Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Bold and daring...   March 18, 2005

Abbas-Mustaan are renown for making taut, edge of the seat thrillers and they have some interesting films to their credit - Baazigar, Khiladi, Humraaz and Ajnabee to name a few. Aitraaz is another feather in their cap. It has a bold and daring concept never seen before in an Indian film. But the fact remains it is heavily 'borrowed' from Barry Levinson's Michael Douglas - Demi Moore starrer Disclosure.pRaj Malhotra (Akshay Kumar) is an executive working in a 9-5 job at a mobile phone company. He has a simple life, some good friends and life is generally a breeze. Things get even better when Priya (Kareena Kapoor) enters his life, they fall in love and get married. She is expecting their first child, he is due for a promotion at work, he couldn't have asked for more. That is, till the predatory man eater Sonia (Priyanka Chopra) is appointed as his MD and it all goes a bit topsy-turvy. She accuses him of rape after he spurns her advances and the case ends up in court. To make matters even more complicated, it is revealed that Sonia is actually Raj's ex girlfriend whom he had dumped after she aborted their child. How the case is resolved forms the crux of the story.pTechnically the film is sound with some good locations and apt cinematography. Music by Himesh Reshammiya is not of the chart busting variety but a couple of the numbers like Gela Gela, Hey You and Talatum are catchy. The choreography is good especially in Gela Gela.pDirectorially, Abbas-Mustaan have done a good job in 'Indianising' the whole concept. What could have been a silly sleaze fest turns out to be a gripping edge of the seat drama that keeps viewers glued to their seats. Some of the sequences especially in the courtroom have been deftly handled and they deserve full credit for this. The dialogues are bold and raise a number of pertinent questions that are usually brushed under the carpet by orthodox Indian mentalities. Why must the male always be held responsible for clandestine happenings between men and women? Can't a man be an object of sexual harassment even in a society like ours?pOf the cast Akshay is restrained and has a fairly passive role. Kareena is good and shines in her one and only confrontational scene with Priyanka and the final courtroom sequence. She is turning into a fine performer and has finally shaken off her Poo image from K3G. Both Paresh Rawal and Annu Kapoor are in splendid form whilst Amrish Puri, although typecast is dependable. Ultimately though, Aitraaz is Priyanka Chopra's film. As the deliciously wicked, gold digging, scheming seductress she chews up every scene she is in with her magnetic screen presence.pOf the four Diwali releases, Aitraaz has a good chance of being successful especially after word of mouth publicity. It has a bold theme, good music and good performances going for it and should find the going easy in spite of strong opposition from Veer Zaara. A thumbs up.
