Amazon.co.uk Review ICollateral/I offers a change of pace for Tom Cruise as a ruthless contract killer, but that's just one of many reasons to recommend this well-crafted thriller. It's from Michael Mann, after all, and the director's stellar track record with crime thrillers (IThief/I, IManhunter/I, and especially IHeat/I) guarantees a rich combination of intelligent plotting, well-drawn characters, and escalating tension, beginning here when icy hit-man Vincent (Cruise) recruits cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx) to drive him through a nocturnal tour of Los Angeles, during which he will execute five people in a 10-hour spree. While Stuart Beattie's screenplay deftly combines intimate character study with raw bursts of action (in keeping with Mann's directorial trademark), Foxx does the best work of his career to date (between his excellent performance in IAli/I and his title-role showcase in IRay/I), and Cruise is fiercely convincing as an ultra-disciplined sociopath. Jada Pinkett-Smith rises above the limitations of a supporting role, and Mann directs with the confidence of a master, turning L.A. into a third major character (much as it was in the Mann-produced TV series IRobbery Homicide Division/I). ICollateral/I is a bit slow at first, but as it develops subtle themes of elusive dreams and lives on the edge, it shifts into overdrive and races, with breathtaking precision, toward a nail-biting climax. "A man dies on the subway. Do you think anyone will notice?" November 29, 2004 19 out of 22 found this review helpful
Definitely in my top three films ever. Collateral manages to get the right balance between action and a multi-dimensional plot. At times the suspense is phenomenal, and while there is violence and gore, it is superbly done and integral to the story rather than being gratuitous and repetitive. The storyline is gripping and frequently surprisingly moralistic and thought-provoking, and the gunfight in the Fever club shows some outstanding choreography coupled with a great trance/electronica tune (an Oriental-language version of "Ready Steady Go!" by Paul Oakenfold). Excellent film all round with a great cast and an excellent storyline: buy it.
what a surprise January 21, 2005 Mandy Harrison (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Wow what a movie. When I said to my partner I had rented this movie he turned up his nose and said he didn't want to watch it. I'd heard a couple of good things, as as we're on the wagon for a month for a detox then put it on for us to watch anyway. pSuperb. The cinematography is awesome, really captures nighttime LA; the humour is so black, a real surprise. The real-time action, like 24, provides the stuff of nightmares. Cruise is just right. In this day and age, being car-jacked by a professional hitman is totally within the realms of possibility..
Mann's best yet January 26, 2005 N. Williams (Hull) 12 out of 17 found this review helpful
Renowned for his top class thrillers, Michael Mann now delivers his latest, and in my opinion greatest film, Collateral. Starring a silver haired Tom Cruise as sociopathic hit-man Vincent, and man of the moment Jamie Foxx as cab driver Max, this film delivers an intense interplay between the two characters with Vincent having to shoulder the burden of Max and Max trying to stay alive long enough to stop Vincent from completing his hits.brIn many ways its a shame that the marketing for this film seemed to put it forward as an action film. Mann's domain is chielfy the thriller and that is what Collateral is best described as. The best moments come not from the admittedly exhilerating shootouts, but from the increasing tension and drama between the two leads who spend most of the film sat in Max's cab. The dialogue is the highest standard and the characters are well fleshed out throughout the film which gives many opportunities for us to get to know the protagionists better than a mere action film. There is also a great supporting cast and both Mark Ruffalo and Jada Pinkett Smith deserve special mentions as the detective on Vincent's trail and a prosecuting lawyer respectively.brMann also deserves a mention for his directing as the film manages an unnerving sense of claustrophobia, even outside of the cab as the characters are confined to crowded nightclubs, alleyways, and a train where the film's finale takes place.brThe extras show the amount of effort that went into the creation of this film and it all shws up on screen. Cruise is fantastic as the villain of the piece and it is great to see him playing someone so against what we're used to from him. The same can be said of Foxx who's portrayal of a cabbie sitting on dreams he can't accomplish is frighteningly convincing. brThose of you who were expecting a rollercoaster full of car chases and shootouts may be sorely disappointed, but for those of us that love a good thriller, you need look no further this has it all and more. It will be tough for Mann to follow this gem.pDVD extras: Unlike most DVD extras packages which seem to bizarrely plug the film which you've already bought, this is a much more interesting set of extras which are actually quite informative. The making of is pretty standard and there are some entertaining deleted scenes but for me the real gem was the rehearsal footage. If you want to see how Cruise and Foxx nailed ther characters so perfectly then look no further. Particularly joyous is 'sepcial delivery' in which Mann has Cruise dress up as a courier in an effort to teach him to blend in to crowds like his character. Not a particularly thorough extras package but what there is here is certainly of a higher standard than usual and will tell you more about the film than 'buy this!'
Possibly the finest thriller ever made February 15, 2005 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
There are few Cop thrillers, which use real deep human emotions as their core, instead of the tom clancy style global politics, and get away with a sucess, and this is one of them! This the pinnacle of Mann's film Career, the pinnacale of Jamie Foxxs (yes it is better than Ray), the pinnacle almost certainly of tom Cruis', putting to right all those naff films he did like MI2 and Vinilla sky. Quite simply cruise should stick to a cold calculating hit man that he is in colatteral, instead of a grinning gink in shody romance or action films. As for Jamie Foxx he is a real actor who fits like a shoe into any role, weather it be a slick, blind jazz player or a hopless loser of a taxi driver, he plays the role perfectly. The film is filled with brilliant moments of cinamatography and deep meaning, and as for the action scenes, if you are not into people leaping around or massive gunfights, this is not for you, but the actions scenes are as elecric as all of the other tense moments in the film, they feel real, they are chaotic, the police are not always in control, Vincent the hitman draws in the bodygaurds of the one he wants to assasinate slowly and then pounces. pThe finest action moment you will have seen in the nightclub is worth taking a look at, as the level of sophistication is so great, and the electric atomosphere is masterfully created by Mann's superb cinamatography and not thousands of rounds flying through the place, at the same time each gunshot that is fired you feel a deep pound in line with your heartbeat, mann perfectly recreates the deep sound of real gunshots, bring your subwoofer for this one, cus you'll, "smell the cordyte".pAs for the cinamatography form the moment you star the film, you see it in mans world, an world of reflections and distortions, and odd cammera angles, this Mann sees things in a way no-one else does, and his other work in Aviator, is a clear example of the extrodinary talent this director has.pThis film is an undeniable classic, a simple but orriginal idea executed perfectly, in the backdrop of this recurring theme of a lonly washed up town of LA, or any city for that matter, where no-one knows anyone else. A thriller that casts aside myths of city life for the harsh reality of it. A film that despite its mixed critical acclaim will be seen as it is now as a classic film that will stand the test of time, well beyond other modern classics like matrix. As far as cinamotography is concerned this is the modern day Citizen Cain, and if you don't agree that this film is great you are a philostine, and a shallow person.
Best film of last year March 1, 2005 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I didn't get around to seeing this in the cinema, and now after having watched the DVD twice I really regret it. A fantastic movie.pTom Cruise has never been better as the icy psychopath Vincent, and Jamie Foxx proves that he's not only a very funny comedian but an excellent straight actor. pIt's rare to get a thriller from Hollywood for adults with grown up people in all the roles. It didn't pull its punches either, and I particularly liked the downbeat ending. Jamie and Jada both looked as if they'd been through a hellish experience by the end. There was no false happy Hollywood ending tacked on to make the audience feel good, which in my view turned an excellent story into a classic. Tom Cruise make more movies like this please!
