Amazon.co.uk Review Will Farrell followed up his star-making vehicle IElf/I, which matched his fine-tuned comic obliviousness to a sweet sincerity, with a more arrogant variation on the same character: Ron Burgundy, a macho, narcissistic news anchor from the 1970s. Along with his news posse--roving reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd, IClueless/I), sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner), and dim-bulb weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell, IBruce Almighty/I)--Burgundy rules the roost in San Diego, fawned upon by groupies and supported by a weary producer (Fred Willard, IBest In Show/I) who tolerates Burgundy's ego because of good ratings. But when Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate, IView from the Top/I) arrives with ambitions to become an anchor herself, she threatens the male-dominated newsroom. IAnchorman/I has plenty of funny material, but it's as if Farrell couldn't decide what he really wanted to mock, and so took smart-ass cracks at everything in sight. Still, there are moments of inspired delirium. I--Bret Fetzer/I

A Cult Classic April 17, 2006 Daniel Mathews (Barry, Wales) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I'll get this out of the way immediately, this is not a film that will appeal to everyone. It is what could be only described as a 'marmite' film. Some will adore its comic irreverence, and some will quite frankly 'not get it'. To me personally this is my favourite comedy of all time, and quite possibly my favourite film in general. I will attempt to not use any of the classic quotations from this film as it will spoil the brilliance of hearing them for the first time.
br /
br /The story is set in a sexist news studio in San Diego, America. The lead anchor Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) falls for a woman at a party, and she incredibly, to Ron, rejects his not so subtle advances. The next day that very woman, Veronica Corningstone is appointed as a journalist in their very newsroom. Cue brilliant pick-up attempts, witty one liners, emotional breakdowns and scenes that don't leave the mind for weeks. Brick is the lovable fool, who interrupts with odd - yet hilarious - lines at random parts of the movie, he is the weatherman. The sports commentator Champ Kind, is a more roguish persona, who suffers a mental breakdown after Ron decides to go on a date with Veronica instead of attending their monthly pancake breakfast. Yes it's that irrelevant. Bryan Fantana is the 'man on the scene' and is the typical ladies man. All the acting in this film deserves to be noted, they all convey the different personalities of the charchters superbly and somehow without laughing.

br /All in all I thoroughly recommend this film to anyone with an irrelevant humour or in need of something up-lifting, which this film oddly fulfils. A cult classic in the form of Zoolander. Do watch out for the battle scene and a cameo from Jack Black. Pure comic brilliance.
really a whole wheel of cheese... i'm impressed. February 1, 2005 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have to say I loved this movie. It was the best comedy of 2004. I think the way I would put this is that its a 'movie', film making this aint. You need to approach it in a low brow sort of way and you will be rewarded. pAnd how anyone cant find Brick the weatherman hilarious is beyond me. If you cant get into the right frame of mind after his introduction change DVD's.
Will Ferrell is superb in a brilliant and hilarious movie!! December 8, 2004 20 out of 25 found this review helpful
First off, Will Ferrell has to be number 1 in my all time favourite actors (including ben stiller, tom hanks and Steve Martin). He is hilarious and i adore all of his movies hes starred or cameo'd in.brNow, Anchorman. I was highly anticipating this movie, after seeing 'Elf'(my second favourite all time film) and ferrells capability to make me laugh my socks off, i couldnt wait until ferrels latest outing. I wont go on with the story but this movie is superb. The acting is first class- from Ferrell and Christina Applegate-who plays Ferrell's rival.brThs story is clever and the jokes are fast paced, although its not as funny as ELF.brWith that aside- this is great and has a lots of cameos ranging from Ben Stiller (YESSS) Vince Vaughn, Tim Robbins,Luke Wilson and Jack Black- who all take part in some of the funniest scenes in the film. I'm flaberghasted about how this didnt really do well with critics and in the cinema.brBut this is still a must buy for all ferrell fans and people who want to be highly entertained. BRILLIANT.
ANCHORMAN = GENIUS April 27, 2005 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
This film is by far the best since Smokey and the Bandit 2. Will Ferrell is the new and improved Jim Carrey (although they've probably been around the same amount of time). p"Ron Burgundy has a voice that could make a Wolverine purr and suits so fine he makes Sinatara look like a hobo!" The film is filled with brilliant and quotable material such as "I have many leather bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany" - That's a chat up line from the legendary news anchor!pBest character in the film has to be "Channel 4's man on the street" Brian Fantana! Brian has a wonderful array of aftershaves which prompts RB to ask - "What cologne you gonna go with? No wait, let me guess - London Gentlemen or blackbeards delight?"pI love this film so much it gets better everytime you watch it. How many people do you know that can read the news AND play Jazz flute???pIf you like this, you'll also enjoy the best of Saturday night live with Will Ferrell. Hilarity guarenteed.pI'll leave you with this - "I WANNA BE ON YOU!"
Anchorman - Legendary Status!! May 14, 2005 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This has to be one of the funniest films in years, at least since the naked gun, now thats saying something. The anchorman is fantastic for anyone who enjoys spoof comedy. In my view its one of the best. the jokes are not only fresh but very funny and very frequent. which keeps you laughing from start to finish. If you haven't already seen this film, then i urge you to buy it NOW.. Oh look out for the scene with jack black ron's dog, hilarious!
