Clan of the Cave Bear February 1, 2009 Ms. R. Ramos (Middx, UK) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
The story is very good but expect to read a lot of subtitles. You can get so caught up in the story line that after you've finished watching it, you're expecting that every other programme you watch afterwards will also have the subtitles. One of the great films out there.
Not too bad for a film of a book February 16, 2009 Mr. J. Young (EU) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
It is always a problem trying to film a book with a rich level of description. At the start I was pleasantly surprised that it seemed to be trying to be faithful to the narrative. Sadly it lost track a little later and for some reason Creb was not killed in the earthquake denouement at the end. Other deviations from the story and foreshortening combinations of events seemed more reasonable to me. Ayla being raped and becoming pregnant at an older age for example, plus her hiding out in her small cave to have her baby at the same time as her being cursed. I suspect that reading the book first would help to follow the film narrative but then that could cause some irritation with the movie script as well. The original author Jean M. Auel appears to me to be a "New Age of Aquarius" type person, into astrological witchcraft, spirituality and a "homeopathic rather than allopathic" medicine type point of view, whereas the movie appeared to me to be boringly materialistic and "modern" in outlook. Quite possibly the arcane astrological witchcraft Gaia type references to Mother Earth, to Ursus Constellation (Cave Bear) or The Wolf Star (Sirius) etc. in later books were just too obscure for the materialistic movie people.

Every cloud has a silver lining October 31, 2009 Mr. D. Ball (West Sussex) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I first saw this film I thought it was ok, not the best acted or indeed the best directed film in the world, but it had one important role. It got me reading the earth children series and for that I believe it has really done a good job, for I left the film wanting to know more.

Better than the book which tends to go into too much flora and forna detail.
not a patch on the book! March 14, 2006 L. mckay (scotland) 46 out of 47 found this review helpful
This film is truly awful! I am a great fan of Jean M. Auel, she must cringe every time someone mentions the film to her. It does the book NO justice at all.brThe only thing it gets right is that Daryl Hannah does look like Ayla, but not worth watching the film for,brSorry to disappoint, but believe me, you will be more disappointed if you sit through the film.
