Love Me If You Dare (Les Jeux d#x27;Enfants) March 5, 2006 Mrs. Caroline A. Midwood (Stourbridge, England) 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
A delightfully original romance, beautifully directed by Yann Samuell. At times hilarious, at other times poignant it follows the relationship between Sophie (Marion Cotillard) and Julien (Guillaume Canet) from childhood to adulthood. Both wracked by heartache in their troubled young lives, they become close friends, setting each other a series of dares, which grow more outlandish with their advancing years. As they start to fall in love they hide their true feelings by setting each other more dangerous challenges and become swept along on a crazy, passionate journey to destruction. By the end of the film there is a sense of completeness - that it has come full circle - and the final scene stimulates the viewer#x27;s imagination to reflect on whether it represents reality, fantasy or some wonderful afterlife in which true love is eternal. Superbly acted by the two leading characters - both as children and as adults - this unique film was a joy to watch. brPerhaps I#x27;m splitting hairs - but I can#x27;t see why the title of the film shouldn#x27;t have remained faithful to the French (Children#x27;s Games.)
love me if you dare June 8, 2005 15 out of 22 found this review helpful
This is an amazing film. Maybe it's because i empathised so much with the ideas in it, but it is a work of genius. Shot in a similar style as Amelie but with darker tones. the little girl, Joséphine Lebas-Joly, i hope goes on to be on our screen for years. brI haven't seen many films since the weight of the world crushed my fragile little spirit that I have connected with, eternal sunshine, vanilla sky, amelie and now i have another film to give me hope. thanks for making it.
Suprisingly good! May 1, 2005 6 out of 13 found this review helpful
We didn't have high expectations but we were definitely surprised. Fast moving, comically funny with many twists making this film profoundly different and immensely enjoyable. It's not just an innocent love story but a way to view the world. If you didn't like this film rent Stepmom! You obviously can't appreciate something wickedly quirky.
Quirky and fun. May 21, 2005 4 out of 13 found this review helpful
This film is great. It's funny, looks nice (French film- pretty colours! Also fit actors.), quirky and just generally entertaining. It's a bit like a rom-com but obviously more bizarre. I don't know any French but you soon forget that you're reading subtitles. It's not at all hard to watch so you don't need to put it on your worthy films list. Just see it if you fancy something entertaining but a bit different.
In response to the 'prententious twaddle' review. May 1, 2009 Jeunet (Paris) Admittedly, Jeux d'enfants should never be labelled a 'romantic Comedy' as this is going to leave many viewers feeling similarly tricked and disappointed. Furthermore, it would be insulting a film which offers a narrative and characters which are far more rich and complex than anything a romantic comedy has to offer. However, that does not mean it is pretentious twaddle. Far from it, I assure you. It is much (as other reviewers have noted) like Wuthering Heights in that it tells the tale of an all-encompassing and passionate (yet twisted) love and how this unresolved, deeply complex passion eventually 'destroys' the characters to which it gives life. Wuthering Heights also met with mixed reviews by critics when it first appeared, mainly because of the stark depiction of mental and physical cruelty...but since then we've accepted that through its extreme and gothic depiction of love it teaches us more about the human condition, and the way we love than so many conventional and 'romantic' stories (and I like romantic comedies!). It should make you feel uncomfortable. If it doesn't - then you should worry :) If you watch it again, without your previous (understandable) expectations, maybe you would reconsider your initial review? Hope so!
