Amazon.co.uk Review Style trumps substance in IMan on Fire/I, a slick, brooding reunion of ICrimson Tide/I star Denzel Washington and director Tony Scott. The ominous, crime-ridden setting is Mexico City, where a dour, alcoholic warrior with a mysterious Black Ops past (Washington) seeks redemption as the devoted bodyguard of a lovable 9-year-old girl (the precociously gifted Dakota Fanning), then responds with predictable fury when she is kidnapped and presumably killed. Prolific screenwriter Brian Helgeland (IMystic River/I, IL.A. Confidential/I) sets a solid emotional foundation for Washington's tormented character, and Scott's stylistic excess compensates for a distended plot that's both repellently violent and viscerally absorbing. Among Scott's more distracting techniques is the use of free-roaming, comic-bookish subtitles... Ieven when they're unnecessary/I! Adapted from a novel by A.J. Quinnell and previously filmed as a 1987 vehicle for Scott Glenn, IMan on Fire/I is roughly on par with Scott's similar 1990 film IRevenge/I, efficiently satisfying Washington's incendiary bloodlust under a heavy blanket of humid, doom-laden atmosphere. I--Jeff Shannon/I

Unmissable March 1, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is definitely Denzel Washington at his best as an alcoholic ex-'spook' hired on the cheap as a bodyguard, directed by a truly 'on form' Tony Scott. The film takes a while to really get into the action but this is by no means a waste of time as it layers important elements to the story. The photography throughout is simply fantastic as we come to expect from both Tony and his brother Ridley. There are so many stylish features to this film from the depiction of the gritty setting of Mexico City, right down to the quirky, yet enjoyable format of the subtitling!!!brThis is a must see film that with not just a superb lead role from Denzel but also great supporting roles from both Christopher Walken and Dakota Fanning. Fantastic soundtrack, very reminiscent of Gladiator(perhaps this was Tony always meant for this to be HIS 'Gladiator').brBUY IT!!!
Superb March 7, 2005 - alikat - (Brighton, UK) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
The story in brief: Denzel Washington is a washed out heavy drinking ex-military type and takes up a job as a bodyguard protecting a 9 year old girl for a wealthy family living in Mexico City. This is a truly superb movie and has to be one of Denzel Washington's finest pieces of work, in fact the acting on all fronts is superb the chemistry between Washington Fanning, the little girl he's protecting, is fantastic as she finds a way into his life. Strong performances all round help to cement a very realistic presentation of a situation many well-off families in South American countries must dread finding themselves in. Filmed on location in Mexico City and filled with corrupt police and law officials it really gets across the dangerous feeling intended by the filmmakers of living in that part of the world. The first half of the film deals with the growing relationship between Washington Fanning and leaves us guessing as to what dark secrets hide in Washington's past, the second part of the film takes a different and surprising turn when the young girl is kidnapped and Washington's past is revealed as he takes it on himself to avenge the kidnapping. All in all an emotional and nail biting ride from start to finish, just superb. The only slight niggle I have is with the occasional subtitles, whilst some of the dialogue is in Spanish and they are required, in these particular scenes the English is subtitled also and the titles can be quite intrusive with various words in bold and enlarged as if to emphasise the speech - I found this "PowerPoint" style of showing the subtitles rather distracting, and detracted from the power of the various scenes; but, as I said, this is a very minor point.
A gripping film to watch August 19, 2005 W.Y. (London, United Kingdom) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Man on Fire is one of the saddest films I've seen. Set in a place where kidnapping is very common and bodyguards are hired to protect kids.
br /Dont want to say too much but it will have u with a box of tissues by the end.
br /Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning are great onscreen together as bodyguard and the little girl he's protecting. The way their relationship grows is so sweet, that when she is kidnapped it makes it ten times worse. A must see!
Typical but fantastic March 10, 2006 Rachy (Wales, UK) 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
Alright it#x27;s got all the typical signs of an American cheese movie, but this one steps aside from those ... and is actually a brilliant film. Wonderful acting from a great cast and a storyline that will grip you.pHas a bit of something for everyone. Bit of heart-wrenching moments and well... scenes where things blow up.
Man On Fire January 14, 2005 Adrian Weissenbruch (Trowbridge, Wiltshire United Kingdom) 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
This truly is some of the best work done by Denzel Washington. A truly gripping plot, based on real-life issues, in Mexico. Denzel plays John Creesy, a washed up ex-CIA agent, hooked on booze, and loosing the will to live. He become the bodyguard of a wealthy young girl, whom he grows to love and who helps him to love life. When the girl gets kidnapped amist mass corruption, Creesy goes out to get her back and to kill anyone who was involved. Intresting scenes include plastic explosives, a man bent over a car bonnet, and an automatic detonator, enough said! Well worth the watch. If you can't afford it, rent it, just as long as you see it. BRILLIANT!!
