5 out of 5 stars When Spielberg was good, he was very good   May 11, 2005

This is one of Spielberg's very best films, a low-budget road movie made after the TV film "Duel", and I rate it alongside Jaws. pGreat cinematography, pace and some terrific acting (I especially love the dialogue between the old couple in the car at the roadside)pAnd although it's about a dysfunctional family par excellence, there's not a teddy bear or little boy looking for his lost father in sight.

5 out of 5 stars Early Spielberg classic   June 8, 2007

There is a certain quality about all films made around this time. The cinematography in this film is outstanding, the acting is good and although the film is fairly long, it moves at a fast enough pace to hold the viewer's attention. An absorbing road movie/drama based on a true story.

5 out of 5 stars Spielberg's indie express satisifes   June 22, 2009
K. Maloney (Kildare, Ireland)
Partially based on true events, Goldie Hawn plays a mother trying to get her son back from the state after being declared unfit for motherhood along with her busted out of prison husband. They take a cop hostage along the way and the rest is an absorbing road adventure. br / br /Spielberg proves he was always a masterful storyteller. The film is paced well and we are shown the human but tainted side of our heroes each step of their journey. The cinematography and scenes are beautifully done. The movie reminded very much of Terence Malicks Badlands. br / br /The acting is great and you really care about what happens to them which is a job well done. Spielberg proves right here like Lucas with American Grafitti that they did indie really really well when they had to. Pity they moved on to bigger fish (literally in Spielbergs case)....9/10

4 out of 5 stars Based on a true story   July 31, 2009
Brendan O. Clarke (Edinburgh)
This movie is over 30 years-old, but holds up well. The story is moving, yet not all very sentimental. Many believe that THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS was a flop in cinema. This is not true. The original film earned over $8 million in the USA in it's original release which at the time made the movie a modest success. It wasn't until a year later with the release of JAWS that the first $100 million movie would be distributed, setting a new standard of success in Hollywood. br / br /7/10

3 out of 5 stars Goldie before she was Goldie Hawn   July 19, 2009

As with all Spielberg you can have a go at it for being sentimental. In this movie a very young-looking Goldie Hawn appears in a non-comedy role. It's a great performance from 35 years ago and the movie is basically about the police trying to catch up with a pair of Bonnie and Clyde types. It's hardly Spielberg's best but worth watching.
