Khawaja "usman khawaja" (hornchurch ,london) - br / br / br / br / br /Tagores take on Merry Widow brought to life by Aishwarya as Binodini in her best performance to date. br / br /Tagore's self dissatisfaction with his short story is redeemed adeptly in a classic outing with Aishwariya giving the role a new meaning as Binodini . br / br /She gesticulates and flutters her eyes and everything is precious and absolutely transfiguring as the young widow, who will not deny physical pleasure because of social inhibitions comes to life as a humane entity. br / br /I am amazed as to how Ghosh was able to extract two amazing performances from this exquisitely beautiful face in this and Raincoat . br / br /The acting is overall sound but it is thelimmaculate detail and trivia which make this better then the book even and that is no mean feat. br / br /The scenes where she is in self denial and the satire she passes on to the critics who disapprove of her physical fling with a married man are cynical ,whimsical and humorous . br / br /The cinematography and camera movements follow her like she is poetry in motion and the movie is a genuine tour deforce . br / br /I adore everything from the sensuous siren to the social satire portrayed in the hypocrisy of a well to do,WEALTHY but ignorant milieu . br / br /This is distinguished as it is not the lugubrious mis adventure of a poor woman in a village but a convent educated middle class bengali girl who can do things better then her peers but must play a victim as a half naked unadorned women in denial of the pleasures of physical world around her . br / br / br /She is docile ,transgressive ,confident and yet tender in a haunting portrayal as a very strong woman in a memorable role. br / br / br /The young widow courted and corrupted by the married young aristocrat is both bold yet discreet and initially reluctant yet she has the grace to take on the hypocritical world where her cowardly lover fails her in a symbolic gesture . br / br /She will not compromise too and settle for just security in the form of any other available suitor as she exercises her freedom of choice but will not deny her desires . br / br /The theme is an ominescent gulf of religious bigotry ,guilt and self blame with religious disciples plundering the innocents in the guise of social tradition . br / br / br /this is where RELIGION MEETS RITUAL AND SENSUOUSNESS MEETS SUPERSTITION ,YET binodini meets humiliation and aggravation everyday and still ridicules the notion of the predestined karma of being reincarnated as a widow . br / br /The sanctimonious temples and offerings are all a gesture of vacuous charity which is in obvious lack here as they insist that the future of a widow is transparent as null and void . br / br /When her dalliance is discovered with the talisman of a jewel metaphorical of lost non -existent virtue we confront sin and gluttony as lust abounds and passions fly high . br / br /The exploitative man and the self sacrificing wife with the mother on a witch hunt all play on your sympathy for sin and virtue ,but binodini is omni present as a template of courage . br / br /While the political change transpires as protest against the British raj culminates in processions of double standards ,the political upheavel is matched by the inner turmoil of a woman in strife with seriously superlative direction . br / br /While tagores intrepid yet incomplete indictment on social irreverence concludes in artistic reverence . br /it is about retrieval of innocence and the humiliation which is suffered in forbidden love . br / br /But it is a classic nevertheless and tagore will be proud to see aishwarya rai play Binodini .
