Excellent. Daring and extremely raunchy May 14, 2008 M. Cole (London UK) 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
I don't understand the previous poor reviews, this is a compelling psychological study with lots of explicit sex
br /thrown in for good measure.
br /The performances are exceptional, particularly by Garrel , better known for his role as the twin brother in Bertolucci's "The Dreamers," and Huppert. With this film, Huppert again proves that her range is limitless and that she is one of most daring and fearless actresses working in today's cinema.
smashing the last tabboo! August 17, 2007 spider-ham (uk) 9 out of 15 found this review helpful
i also disagree with these negative reviews. i think this was a great attempt to smash the last tabboo - adult consentual incest. other films have danced around the issue but this film handles it straight on. highly reccomended, i was glued to the tv. if only more films were made on this subject that didn't try to judge or criticise. very erotic, the only fault was that we don't see them have physical contact but that would have probably resulted in a banning or such nonsense.
great! May 14, 2008 Ms. F. I. Macdonald (uk) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
i'm very glad i decided to watch the film regardless of the bad reviews, as i thought it was brilliant and actually watched it another three times. I am a great fan of foreign cinema and this story, though crude in many parts was a treat of a film to watch with beautiful cinematography and a great cast. Well worth a watch.
Ma Mere, Superb !! June 2, 2006 M. Auer 26 out of 41 found this review helpful
A superb movie, they certainly didn't hold back when making this film! ,yes this film is graphic, but thats what I love about french film making, they aren't scared to go beyond what is deemed as morally acceptable, glued from beginning end. Watch it if you dare!!!
Could have been so much better July 20, 2008 Tonkfan 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was fascinated by the concept of a teenaged boy having to go and live with his mysterious, morally ambiguous mother, but the two lead actors are compelling and talented enough for this film to have been far more subtle in its exploration of her amorality. I loved the first 20 minutes or so, and then it all became a bit more tacky than it needed to be.

br /That said, I found it an interesting curio and I could watch Isabelle Huppert sit and do nothing.
br /
br /All in all, rather odd and could have been so much better.
