DVD is in Dolby Surround Stereo June 1, 2006 Lee Eng Kong (George Town, Penang Malaysia) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I hesitated for so long before finally purchasing this DVD due to the negative reviews posted. Finally I bought it as there is a discount of 54%. Guess what? The DVD is in Dolby Surround Stereo and not MONO as stated. On my home theatre system, I can hear Streisand's voice on my centre speaker whereas the other sounds come from the left and right speakers as well as my rear speakers.
br /The image is in widescreen. I don't remember the aspect ratio in the cinemas so I cannot comment if the image has been cropped. The quality of the image is excellent with very minor specks. At the present discounted price, this DVD is a real bargain. Who knows when the Streisand colour-approved DVD will be released in USA. Even "A Star Is Born" has been delayed so many times. Why wait when this DVD is a quality product?
FINALLY!!! AT LAST!!! THE WAIT IS OVER!!! March 23, 2005 Dr. Jose Santos Carvalho (Portugal) 32 out of 36 found this review helpful
One cannot possibly fathom why this has been released on DVD only now! Possibly one of the least understood films of all times. You love it or you hate it! I love it (always have, since chilhood), but most of you don't! But dispite everything, whatever one thinks, the score is just the best EVER on a movie!!! Camp? Yes! Barbra is everywhere? That too (and good for her)! A personal theme? No doubt! But I can relate to it, although I'm not a Jew myself. But that's only the underlining of the movie. It is about so much more than that! It's about loss, about the will to improve, fight against odds, the questioning of your preordained place in the "scheme of things"! All that with Vintage song writing, uniquely sung by Barbra, at her very best (the 23 second high note at the end of the movie will tell you all there is to know about singing)! For me, no doubt, on of the lauches of the year, long long overdue, and I can't wait to hear it in Dolby 5.1 (I hope)! If you enjoy it half of what I'm sure to, you're in for a wonderful time! And Barbra, by the way, welcome back...!!!
A heart warming film October 26, 2005 D. Young (London) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
A young girl in Eastern Europe in 1900's is so desperate to have more than is being offered to her while amoungst her Jewish community. After the sudden death of her father she decides to set out to find just those things...but can only achieve this while disguised as a young man. There is a Shakespares 'Twelth night' twist to this film. When on her enlightening journey she falls in love with a fellow scholar. This film shows what extents people will go to when in love. It is a beautiful film which is also funny and moving with the amazing sound of Barbra Streisands' voice.
Pure genius February 15, 2006 robin connaughton (UK) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is one of Streisands screen triumphs, in which she stars in, directs and also provides the vocal score for the soundtrack.pA personal tribute to her late father, each scene is beautifully photographed with close attention to detail such as colour and texture and form.pVery clever in the way the vocals are portrayed. When she is thinking to herself as Yentl, the music is in the background, when she is alone her thoughts come out in the form of audible song.pAs a director, she does not hog the limelight - as some divas would be tempted to do.
a musical wirth a message July 20, 2007 F. A. Penney (Edinburgh, Scotland UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Firstly, box of this dvd says it's "full frame" but that's a bit misleading as it does have the bands at the bottom and top of the screen, so I guess it's widescreen although not "anamorphic" as a previous reveiwer also states (thanks for that btw - it made purchase the dvd, which I'd previously been hesitant about).
br /It's a great film, Barbra is delightful with a great supporting cast, some of who you will know their face from British tv etc.
br /The songs are all wonderful and I always find watching this movie quite inspirational. It's one of my favourites.
