come on guys, give it a chance! August 14, 2005 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I went to go and see this with my girlfriend because she loves these kinds of movies, the sickly sweet, intoxicatingly happy and demure films starring little stars with little brains. Well that is what I expected when I entered the theatre to see this flick. pFirst Daughter is the story of Sam (Katie Holmes) who is America's First Daughter (the President's daughter) going to college, and surprisingly (not) wants absolutely no connection to her father or his political stand point. The story is touching and portrayed well even though it's quite simple.pNow I have to say, Katie Holmes is very attractive indeed, despite the Cruise-Gate situation she is absolutely excellent in this little motion picture. She really portrays an entire emotion pallet, and includes the innocence the character needs. (See the frat party) Marc Blucas from Buffy and "I Capture the Castle" fame takes male lead of the "hotty" from college that Sam falls for, but is he who he says he is?pThis film isn't meant to be taken seriously, it's meant to be light hearted fun, with a story to tell and a person to explore. The critics scrutinize this and say its complete crap with a rubbish script. Admittedly the script is not up to the performance level, but it's only a film! Not a piece of Motion Literature and it is still hugely enjoyable! The soundtrack is also EXCELLENT, even though you can't buy it; it features great songs which is always a high point for me. pThe DVD contains fairly poor extras: A commentary I cannot find on the disk, a featurette on the ballroom dancing between Holmes and Blucas, and a tribute to the composer who sadly passed away during working on the film. But despite the mediocre special features, they are interesting to see and give insight into the production.pMy final words for this will be "watch this with an open mind". If you watch it expecting crap, you won't enjoy it. Expect the unexpected and watch this film with an open heart, open mind and a smile.
loved it March 19, 2008 Miss J Macdonald i really loved this film, the film is very lighthearted and enjoyable, i really love fairytale stories like this as they always have a happy ending. Katie holmes was brilliant!!!
ROMAN HOLIDAY STYLE ROMANTIC COMEDY June 18, 2005 Kelvin MacGregor 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Reminiscent of Roman Holiday with Dawson's Creek star Katie Holmes playing the "princess" sneaking out of the palace for a bit of fun. Okay, she's the US President's daughter leaving the White House and isn't going incognito like Audrey Hepburn - but under the full glare of the media spotlight. This has obviously been inspired by Chelsea Clinton's much-publicised time at college, with burly big secret service agents always on tow to protect the Prez's little girl which becomes a predictable running gag throughout the movie.brWhat starts out as a teen movie with a lippy black girlie sidekick sharing a dorm room with daddy's girl and plenty of frat jokes and pumping soundtrack soon settles down in to a charming Princess Diaries type family film that will appeal to everyone who likes fun romantic comedies. A neat plot twist (which I won't give away) puts a clever spin on the love story and heightens the tension of this charming little film.brKatie Holmes, as always, is a delight to watch. Director Forest Whitaker does a great job and watch out for his brief cameo appearance as a presidential aide on board Air Force One (he also narrates the story). Michael Keaton seems a bit cold and distant at first as the Prez but soon loses his stuffiness and you warm to him by the end of the movie.brSome great extras with deleted scenes and two features - Katies Holmes and love interest Marc Blucas being put through their paces as they learn ballroom dancing, and a tribute to composer Michael Kamen who died during the production but left a haunting fairytale theme tune that makes the film sparkle.brOne sour note, though: according to the Special Features Information on the sleeve there is supposed to be an actor's and director's commentary but it is NOT on the DVD and leaves you feeling a little short changed. So only four stars for what is a five star movie.
An enjoyable fairytale romance August 21, 2005 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
There seem to be quite a few of these sorts of teenage girl romances out at the moment - and even though I am far from a teenage girl I say "why not?" pThis one does exactly what it says on the tin! It's light and predictable but enjoyable and the acting talents of the two leads Katie Holmes and Marc Blucas make it better than average. I would rate it better than "Cinderella Story" but not as good as "What a girl wants". Katie gets to wear some fantastic dresses and there's some ballroom dancing that makes it a bit different. I was a little disappointed with Samantha's parents in the film but I'm not really a Michael Keaton fan. I also wasn't keen on the narration at the start and end of the film but I suppose that was done to give it a fairytale "Once upon a time" quality. pA quick comment on the DVD extras. The Actor's and Director's Commentary was nowhere to be found and the two scenes listed as deleted/extended scenes were ones already included in the film and although I have watched them several times they seem identical so that was another non-extra! pAll-in-all, I would recommend this film to anyone who's a romantic at heart!
Nice film if you do part time security work and feel out of place. March 18, 2009 E. Coolican (london) I've seen it over 7 times, which serves as the ultimate test, plus it has resonances with me own life, which bumps it up one star.
