Amazon.co.uk Review Brutal and breathtaking, iSin City/i is Robert Rodriguez's stunningly realized vision of Frank Miller's pulpy comic books. In the first of three separate but loosely related stories, Marv (Mickey Rourke in heavy makeup) tries to track down the killers of a woman who ended up dead in his bed. In the second story, Dwight's (Clive Owen) attempt to defend a woman from a brutal abuser goes horribly wrong, and threatens to destroy the uneasy truce among the police, the mob, and the women of Old Town. Finally, an aging cop on his last day on the job (Bruce Willis) rescues a young girl from a kidnapper, but is himself thrown in jail. Years later, he has a chance to save her again.p Based on three of Miller's immensely popular and immensely gritty books (iThe Hard Goodbye, The Big Fat Kill, and That Yellow Bastard/i), iSin City/i is unquestionably the most faithful comic-book-based movie ever made. Each shot looks like a panel from its source material, and director Rodriguez (who refers to it as a "translation" rather than an adaptation) resigned from the Directors Guild so that Miller could share a directing credit. Like the books, it's almost entirely in stark black and white with some occasional bursts of color (a woman's red lips, a villain's yellow face). The backgrounds are entirely digitally generated, yet not self-consciously so, and perfectly capture Miller's gritty cityscape. And though most of Miller's copious nudity is absent, the violence is unrelentingly present. That may be the biggest obstacle to viewers who aren't already fans of the books and who may have been turned off by iKill Bill/i (whose director, Quentin Tarantino, helmed one scene of iSin City/i). In addition, it's a bleak, desperate world in which the heroes are killers, corruption rules, and the women are almost all prostitutes or strippers. But Miller's stories are riveting, and the huge cast--which also includes Jessica Alba, Jaime King, Brittany Murphy, Rosario Dawson, Benicio Del Toro, Elijah Wood, Nick Stahl, Michael Clarke Duncan, Devin Aoki, Carla Gugino, and Josh Hartnett--is just about perfect. (Only Bruce Willis and Michael Madsen, while very well-suited to their roles, seem hard to separate from their established screen personas.) In what Rodriguez hopes is the first of a series, iSin City/i is a spectacular achievement. i--David Horiuchi, Amazon.com/i

SIN-ful! November 15, 2005 Mr. Jd Ware (London) 27 out of 29 found this review helpful
This is one of the most striking, memorable, imaginative and violent films to have come out in a long, long time. It is a cliched ridden flick where nothing is taken too seriously - especially life - and where anything goes.pExpect to meet hookers, mercenaries, hit men, good cops, bad cops, strippers and thugs in Sin City. This tells three stories, that are ingeniously subtley linked together.pThe most interesting story is Bruce Willis#x27; as Hartigan. A cop who protected a little girl when she was younger, and in a cruel twist of fate has to protect her again when she is older (and played by Jessica Alba). It#x27;s the most detailed story, with the best character development. pThe best character, however, is Mickey Rourke#x27;s Marv. A tough, unbeatable and ugly man who is out to avenge the death of a hooker who gave him things he had never dreamed of. It#x27;s a slightly simple story, but it#x27;s effective, violent, and unlike the other stories in the film, filled with dark humour.pClive Owen is the weakest main character. He plays Dwight with a lot of gusto, but the character doesn#x27;t have the same heart that the others does, as he tries to stop Benicio Del Toro#x27;s troublemaker. This story also includes the infamous scene directed by Quentin Tarantino, where Dwights dead body starts talking again. There#x27;s nothing wrong with Tarantino, he#x27;s a great director, but in Sin City, his scene feels out of place. It doesn#x27;t flow with the rest of the film, and jars you out of the mood. It still is an interesting scene, however.pOf course, there are also some brilliant baddies. Elijah Wood#x27;s cannibal is creepy, while Nick Stahl relishes in the dirtyness of Yellow B######.pThis DVD is sadly lacking in the extras department. the menu system looks gorgeous, and is great fun to watch, but the there is only an 8-minute behind the scenes that doesn#x27;t really reveal anything and only just scratches the surface. If you want extras, wait for the special edition that is rumoured to be coming soon.pBut Sin City is a film worth seeing, extras or not. It#x27;s stylised violence, splashes of colour, and gritty noir is mesmerising, and is a truly unique experience in film.
Definately, bring it on!! October 24, 2005 MeK_Karuso (UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Yep, this is a good movie. If you dont like the distinctive guest diector tarantino's style. then you might not like this one much. More suited to guys, this film noir adaptation of frank miller's Sin City is perfect for peole wanting a new dimension in hte movie world, not just soime typical mainstream movie that could be made just as easily on a much lower budget. This is a bit like marmite though, you either love it or hate it. Personally i love it, and hope you will too. The effects are brilliant and the characters catchy. Bruce willis' character reflects his role in the remake of "The jackal" and all are great.
Outrageously Good January 21, 2006 Donald Thompson (Belfast N Ireland) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Try to imagine every film noir you have ever seen, now add a splash of Hong Kong style action, top up with anime graphics and finally dose liberally with cynicism. Got that? Good cause you#x27;re only halfway there! This is one of those movies which comes as a complete shock to the system. Its so simple on the surface, and not to mention very sexist, that it cannot possibly work, yet it does. Almost impossible to describe if you have not seen the Frank Miller graphic novels. Three simple stories told with panache and more than a little male fantasy and you have the most unique major movie release of the past few years. An all star cast serves up some prime cuts of pure forties crime thillers mixed with modern cynicism and seventies anti hero ethics. Full marks all round, even an unrecognisable Mickey Rourke, only the cardboard cut out "babes" are a disappointment. Otherwise Rodriguez, Miller, Tarantino et al deliver a truly modern classic. You must see this movie!
A Masterpiece Of Modern Cinema October 3, 2005 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This film, is without a doubt one of the best i have ever seen. The directing and screenplay, are simply magnificant.brRodriguez's previous works, include:the Faculty, and From Dusk Till Dawn. Sin City however, is in a totaly different league.brFrom the word go, we see that the visual effects in this film are out of the ordinary. Before i watched this film, it was described to me as bw. When i watched it however, i realised that this was not exactly the case. Though it is primarily a black and white film, odd, key features in scenes, are in colour. (e.g Goldie's big red lips, or the heart shaped bed). Probably the most original thing about this film, is the way that it has been directed.(my favourite example, is Bruce Willis' white blood.brThough the main director of the film was Robert Rodriguez, Frank Miller (the original creator of the comic books)and Quentin Tarantino(Rodriguez's "brother") also direct.pAside from the brilliant directing and screenplay, the film is carried by some powerhouse performances. (Notably an unrecognisable Mickey Rourke, playing Marv).p There are three loosely based parts to this film. #1 Bruce Willis, as a cop doing one last case.#2 Mickey Rourke getting revenge on those who killed Goldie, "the only one he ever loved." #3 Clive Owen, the vigilante.pFull of violence, dark comedy,brilliant/unusual directing, fantastic acting, (and Jessica Alba as a stripper), i guarantee that Sin City is not like any film you've ever seen before. If you appreciate good cinema, you'll love it!
Warning ! July 22, 2005 C. Smith (UK) 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
Just a quick note to warn you that this edition is about as meaty as a skeleton! - expect a healthier version to be released around Christmas, which should include extended cuts of all three stories and a host of extra goodies.
