| Customer Reviews: Revisiting your childhood February 5, 2006 27 out of 30 found this review helpful
I grew up with Coronation Street in the 1970s and this box set afforded an excellent opportunity to revisit my childhood. With 80 episodes over 10 discs, this box set represents very good value for money. brIt#x27;s not quite perfect: there are no extras or sleeve notes, therefore assuming the viewer is very familiar with the programme and its characters. Some further explanation of the stories in each episode would have been beneficial.brThe technical quality of these episodes is a bit suspect. The actors continually fluff their lines, the camerawork is often wobbly and the boom microphone (or its shadow) frequently makes an appearance in shot! brNevertheless give me this to current-day Corrie any day. The standard of the writing in the episodes from 1976 onwards is consistently superb with genuine pathos and Lancashire humour in abundance. Compare this with the over-the-top caricature present in current-day Corrie and you#x27;ll appreciate just how the increase in the number of episodes currently churned out has affected the quality of the show over the last 10 years or so. The early episodes on this set are variable and see the programme trying to find its feet in a new decade and without some of the popular characters from the 1960s, but get this for the late 70s episodes, as these are the ones that represent Coronation Street at its best.

Whilst thoroughly enjoying this compilation, I was irritated by the lack of a plot synopsis for each episode and a brief explanation of what happened afterwards. It looks as though this set was simpled cobbled together without any thought going into it other than pitching it at a premium price. That said, it is a facinating trip back in time and one which I would recommend to any fan of the series. No doubt in the near future, a 'new' boxed set will be offered complete with special features and plot outlines for even more money.
