5 out of 5 stars Excellent return to protestant values   January 4, 2009
Paul M. T. Boyd (England, UK)

I really liked this cartoon. It's a shame it was never broadcast but that's because Britain is a police state. I thought it was very funny and Ruby Wax was excellent as the pope. The British actors were not as good. I find that when British people mock catholicism, it's always nasty and unpleasant, but when Americans do it, it makes me laugh. So well done to including Ruby Wax in the cast. They should make another one but probably won't because all the papists will be up in arms about the mocking of their empire. I spent years in nasty catholic schools and I think they should be closed down. I also much time in British state schools and they were nice places, if not very good educationally. Some of the ideas in the cartoon were not thought through very well, but I think overall if you consider yourself a protestant, you should definitley buy this. I've only watched it a couple of times but I bought it as soon as it was released on DVD. It was banned because of being anti catholic, and maybe inspiring religous hatred, but nobody forces people to remain catholic if they don't want to be. Anyone can renounce the church and become protestant even if you don't like the other protestant faiths in your country. (Admittedly the Church of England and the other churches in England are a bit dull) If the cartoon was about black people or jews then I could see why it would inspire hatred, but the catholic faith is something anyone can leave. This cartoon should hopefully convince people to do so. The live acting introduction at the beginning in the school classroom was very good also. If you believe in freedom then being catholic is simply wrong.

This series is outrageous and features Mat Lucas at his finest! It is refreshing to finally see such great British comedy that had been banned for so long. Popetown was hilarious and is a must-see for anyone that has enjoyed the work of The Office star and writer Mackenzie Crook.
