iLords of Dogtown/i captures the sheer kinetic joy of skateboarding like no other movie (except, perhaps, iDogtown and Z-Boys/i , a documentary about the very skateboarders this movie depicts). Set in the mid-1970s in Venice, CA--a.k.a. Dogtown--the movie starts with three young aspiring surfers turned skateboarders: Stacy (John Robinson, iElephant/i), Jay (Emile Hirsch, iThe Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys/i), and Tony (Victor Rasuk, iRaising Victor Vargas/i). When alpha-stoner Skip (Heath Ledger, iA Knight's Tale/i) recognizes the potential of skateboarding as a new sport, his surf shop becomes the centre of the boys' universe. They swiftly rise as skateboarding stars and find their brotherhood threatened by sex, money, fame, and ego--it's a common enough story, but director Catherine Hardwicke (iThirteen/i) has a gift for capturing the raw messiness of life. iLords of Dogtown/i seems to unfold haphazardly, yet every scene moves the increasingly dizzy rise (or fall) of each skater forward with headlong momentum. The excellent cast includes Rebecca De Mornay (iRisky Business/i), Johnny Knoxville (iJackass: The Movie/i), and Nikki Reed (iThirteen/i). iLords of Dogtown/i, written by skater Stacy Peralta (and based on his own life), both celebrates the excitement of testosterone-fuelled recklessness and quietly reflects on the cost of getting what you want. i--Bret Fetzer/i

Lords Of Dogtown is a compelling true story about the origins of pro skateboarding. Following the ups and downs of the three major stars to emerge from the 'Z-Boys' skate club, this movie documents the struggle that fame and recognition has on their once impeccable friendship. Tony, Stacy and Jay, three teenage boys with very different backgrounds but all sharing a passion for surfing, break into the pro skating world with their revolutionary moves, but only to find that the fame is not as appealing as it looks. The three boys are tested to the limits when they begin to shine at the sport and are flooded with potential sponsors, and faced with the difficult decision of whether to sell out their loyalty to Skip, their Team Leader, for fame and money. Not only is their loyalty to Skip tested but their allegiance to each other is pushed past its limits, the attraction of fame, fortune and notoriety quickly breaks down their friendship and changes them in many ways.

br / Jay's story is a saddening journey depicting the effects a broken home can have on a teenage boy striving to support his incapable mother, forcing him to break away from his passion. Tony's story demonstrates the crushing effects fame can have by burning out the passion and the fun and turning it into a constant trial and strife to be the best, despite who might get hurt in the process. Stacy, however, shows how maintaining purity of heart is the best way to get to the top, even if the journey is not the most glamorous.

br / The acting is brilliant, Emile Hirsch, Victor Rasuk and John Robinson are believable in their roles and carry the movie exceptionally well. Heath Ledger is also very impressive as Skip, the down trodden owner of the skate shop and Michael Angerano as Sid, pulls off his unfortunate storyperfectly. The actors help to bring the story to life; give it energy and excitement with the help of a perfectly chosen soundtrack.

br / The movie is exceptional at displaying the pure, untouched energy of the youths, so much so that you can almost feel the rush the teenagers are feeling. It's a raw and beautiful emotion that is constantly existent throughout. The hard hitting break up of the friendship is excellently depicted, and although laced in tragedy, the ending is something beautiful and incredibly powerful aligned with Sparklehorse's perfectly heartbreaking cover of Wish You Were Here. There is so much emotional quality; highly recommend, whether a skateboarding fan or not.
Dogtown forever! January 2, 2007 Tan1963 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I won't go into any great detail about the film as another reviewer has already covered it extensively. But what I will say is that if you started skating back in the 70s then this is a must see film. It's beautifully shot and the actors that play Tony, Jay and Stacey really have copied their styles perfectly. There is plenty of action and cameo roles by arguably the 3 most famous/notorious skaters of all time. I honestly can't see non skaters being as enthusiastic about the film but it's still worth seeing especially at the discounted price it is now available for.
Gnarly! June 5, 2009 Pilipala (UK) This film is excellent - real skateboarding, great performances, the late Heath Ledger plays his part brilliantly. Almost true to real story -and captures the era and sense of teen innovation/revolution. Great stuff.
An Excellent Film. August 25, 2009 Mother of Pod. (Borehamwood) This is the true story of a group of young people who enjoy skateboarding. Written by Stacy Peralta who was one of the group it shows how skateboarding (and a bit of luck) changed their lives in different ways.
br /There is some brilliant acting from the late Heath Ledger and Johnny Knoxville and a guest appearance from Tony Hawk.
br /A thoroughly enjoyable film.
Okay, but pales in comparison with Dogtown And Z Boys August 13, 2007 Franklin T Marmoset 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Based on a true story, Lords Of Dogtown dramatises a period in the mid-seventies when a gang of misfit surfer types replaced waves with empty swimming pools and revolutionised the then new sport of skateboarding. For the most part, it follows Stacy Peralta, Jay Adams, and Tony Alva as they become a part of the Zephyr skate team and find themselves heading toward fame and money and success, but not without the usual difficulties those things bring.
br /
br /This is decent enough, but the problem is it follows in the wake of Stacy Peralta's excellent documentary Dogtown And Z Boys, which was a far superior look at these young men who turned a child's hobby into the multi-million dollar sporting industry it is today. That one benefited from the insight and recollections of the people who were there, and it had a genuine, pleasantly nostalgic feel to it. This, though, is the Hollywood-ised version, and as such is a little too slick and shallow to fully engage. It's not awful, but Catherine Hardwicke's film (based on Peralta's own screenplay) attacks the material with all the subtlety and grace of a pop video, and this heavy-handed approach left it feeling insubstantial and unsatisfying.
br /
br /All the cast do well, but the only real stand-out is Heath Ledger, who appeared to be channelling the spirit of Val Kilmer as Skip, the guy who started the Zephyr team from his surfboard shop in Venice Beach. Otherwise, there's not enough on offer here to raise it above (or even near) Dogtown And Z Boys, so I'd recommend anyone with an interest in this fascinating story of trailblazing skaters check that one out instead.
