Amazon.co.uk Review Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on iThe Daily Show/i and in movies like iBruce Almighty/i and iAnchorman/i--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humour and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (iClueless, The Shape of Things/i) and Jane Lynch (iBest in Show, A Mighty Wind/i), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (iLovely Amazing, Being John Malkovich/i). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --iBret Fetzer/i

A classic film to be watched again and again December 3, 2006 E. S. Blatch 17 out of 21 found this review helpful
If you are a 40 year old virgin you may find this film uncomfortable. If however you are an average human being who has attempted to connect with the opposite sex or even your own sex you will find this hilarious.

br /Originally rented this movie not expecting a lot. Boy was I wrong, we have since bought the DVD and usually watch bits of it about once a week.
br /
br /The dialogue is an accurate interpretation of how adults interact with each other, constantly bickering more like children. The one upmanship of not admitting to what you are really thinking or feeling. The poor descriptions by characters about what life is about. The frustrations of embarrassing yourself in front of others.
br /
br /It is hard to explain all the excellent bits without inclduing too many spoilers, however the actors involved obviously all get on with each other extremely well and this shines through. Although not all the actors involved in this film are well known they are superb at what they do.

One of the funniest things in a while... December 5, 2005 Shkandrij 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
From the title you can probably guess this is an immature no holds barred american comedy...and it is, but that doesn#x27;t make it bad. In fact it#x27;s really funny, original and I havn#x27;t seen anything like it before! pIt rude, crude and generally very funny, buy it
classic! December 29, 2005 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
tell me a film that you will keep laughing about days after you#x27;ve watched it? Alongside Anchorman and Wedding Crashers, it#x27;s that style of comedy, which in my eyes has been really capturing interest lately, all the usual suspects are in it, and yes there is loads of swearing but all the acting is on-the-spot and wouldn#x27;t work any other way, it#x27;s so stupidly funny just the way it is! not worth renting it out, simply buy it!
A surprisingly good watch March 14, 2006 12 out of 16 found this review helpful
I had really expected this film to be a crass American Pie style caper but I was pleasantly surprised. It is lewd and bawdy in places but it#x27;s totally in context. Superb acting by all the cast and above all, Andy#x27;s situation is handled with sensitivity and warmness which I wasn#x27;t expecting. There are very few films that have made me laugh out loud but this did it for me.
Great. December 8, 2005 Smart Fan (Kent, UK) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Oh my god. I could not stop laughing all the way through this cracker of a comedy. The very funny, yet very crude #x27;toilet humour#x27; in jokes kept me and the rest of the people in the cinema almost wetting ourselves with laughther. Steve Carrol was superb as a first timer to main role acting. Lets hope he has more similar roles in the futre.
