Amazon.co.uk Review
Fairy tales come vividly to life in IThe Brothers Grimm/I, a long-delayed fantasy/horror comedy that greatly benefits from the ingenuity of director Terry Gilliam. In lesser hands, the ambitious screenplay by prolific horror specialist Ehren Kruger (who wrote the American versions of IThe Ring/I and IThe Ring 2/I) might have turned into an erratic monster mash like IVan Helsing/I. But Gilliam's maverick sensibility makes the film more closely comparable to Tim Burton's ISleepy Hollow/I and Neil Jordan's IThe Company of Wolves/I, with the added benefit of impressive CGI effects and lavish (though cost-efficient) production design, making the most of a challenging $75 million budget. P Kruger's clever conceit is to turn "folklore collectors" Wilhem and Jacob Grimm (Matt Damon and Heath Ledger, respectively) into 19th-century con artists who perform bogus exorcisms of "evil enchantments" while travelling from village to village in French-occupied Germany. The two soon find themselves ensnared in a genuinely supernatural crisis involving the curse of the Mirror Queen (Monica Bellucci) and such fantastical marvels as the Big Bad Wolf, the Gingerbread Man, and a host of other truly enchanted (and not altogether friendly) flora and fauna. P It's kind of a mess, switching from over-the-top humour (mostly from Peter Stormare as a manic villain) to serious fantasy involving the beautiful Angelika (Lena Headey), who proves to be the Grimm Brothers' most reliable ally. And like many of Gilliam's films, IGrimm/I suffered from production delays (during which Gilliam filmed ITideland/I), distributor fallout, and several changes in its theatrical release date, but none of these issues prevent the film from being a welcomed addition to Gilliam's remarkable list of credits.--IJeff Shannon/I

5 out of 5 stars excellent movie   August 9, 2006

For those of you who love stuff like the mummy or van helsing, sleepy hollow and other films like you will love this film. Not only are the leading men really hot (as in the movies above) but it contains some excellent action sequences as well as stunning visual effects. For me I abosoloutly love this film. I have to admit it's a bit slow getting into it but once the first 20 minutes or so is over and it gets into the proper storyline it becomes interesting and I loved seeing how many fairytales they had used, took apart and then added to other fairtales to make an interesting twist of old folklore. br / br /Defiantly not a film for under 12 year olds unless they like the occasional bit of blood and gore but other than that a favourite in my dvd colletion.

5 out of 5 stars excellent part of the overall story   March 15, 2006

As the first in the trilogy of 3 such films to be made, this is an excellent start. the acting from matt damon and the others is brilliant. Well worth watching the other 2 when they come out as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gilliam take on the fantasy genre, intelligent !   December 3, 2006

I really liked this movie .. Good take on the fantasy genre by Terry Gilliam. Beautifully photographed with a very dense visual atmosphere of br /fantasy and mystery. Intelligent plotline: Grimms brothers get caught in br /horror setup not of their own making, and yet it is exactly what they do br /(fake horror setups). Also, great mix of several key themes of classical br /Grimm brothers tales. br / br /I hope there will be a follow-up which is hinted at by the end.

Eliminating Evil Since 1812.pSet in the early 18th century (in French-occupied Germany!) Will Grimm (Damon) and Jake Grimm (Ledger) are siblings who travel the countryside as snake-oil salesmen, convincing unsuspecting towns that they are haunted and agreeing to get rid of the demons; all for a price of course. In the meantime they set their tales down in writing, creating a wealth of oddball, offbeat, and frightening characters. But after they are caught by General Delatombe (Pryce) and his sidekick Cavaldi (Stormare), they are sent to the tiny village of Marbaden to solve the mysterious disappearance of a number of young girls, placing them in the middle of a fantasy world unlike any they#x27;d ever invented...brComedy director Terry Gilliam gets another US hit under his widening belt. One of the greatest British directors in the last 30 years bring joy to the screen once again, and it is a must watch. Comedy, fighting and dragons combine to make a great family or individual film for all. NOT TO BE MISSED

I loved this film. If you don't like Terry Gilliam films then you may be better off not watching it, but if you do then you may love this too. It's an intelligent and funny take on fairy tales with an adult twist. Lots of fun!
