5 out of 5 stars Sweeney Todd The Directors Cut   February 22, 2006

Ray Winstone at his best yet again, a faultless portrayal of the Demon Barber, BUT my one crititism and the reason that I bought the dvd was the Directors Cut description. However, The Directors Cut is EXACTLY as the transmitted version and I feel cheated. so if you saw the TV edition then the Directors Cut just does not deliver, there are NO extras what so ever, but if you like Ray Winstone as I do then buy it.

5 out of 5 stars superb sweeney todd   February 13, 2006

this is one of the best dramas i`ve ever seen. Ray Winstone plays the deranged serial killer with a menace reminiscent of his character in scum. The 18th century setting is perfect as the gloomy surroundings provide a great backdrop for the murderous activities going on in sweeney todd`s barber shop. The journey sweeney todd takes from a man seemingly disgruntled at the injustices in society to someone who can`t stop killing his customers is entralling but not for the faint hearted.

Having just watched the 'new' version of Depps Sweeney Todd, I have the pleasure in saying that once again, the original film is the best. Ray Winston is the definitive Todd. Not the same sort of character played in Robin of Sherwood, but still professional acting nevertheless. This shows the versatility of the man. You can not seriously watch any other version without watching this one. It is rare that I award five stars to a performance, but this film is surely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the Singing, THIS is the real Sweeney Todd   May 24, 2008

Ray Winstone turns out a career-best performance as the 18th century Demon Barber of Fleet Street in this 2006 BBC rendering of the Sweeney Todd tale. Rather than a man bereft of wife and child, as the overly-romantic Sondehim musical version portrays, Sweeney Todd here is a complex and troubled man - jailed at a tender age (about 10 or so) for 20 years on the infamous Newgate gaol, he is released to a cruel and uncaring world which seems as dismal as his life within the gaol. He cannot see any hope for a normal life, having never had one. So all he can hope for is a life which will erase the demons from the past from returning - but return they do. br / br /Taken by a lovely woman, Mrs. Lovett, who faints in the street during a hanging, Todd soon finds her again on his doorstep one evening, seeking information about an abortion for a cousin, which is something an 19th century barber would have knowledge. From there, a tenderness arises between the two and throughout the movie one can almost visibly see the love grow for Lovett by Todd, only to be dashed by his warped view of the world around him, which Todd sees as in flashbacks as demonic tortures from his past. br / br /When asked at the end why he did it, he answers simply because he could - and eventually, because he "couldn't not." This also answers the question of why he was as much in love with Mrs Lovett as well, I think, as that question also hung in the air. Based upon the horrific form of upbringing he had from his family and the prison, perhaps this was the best answer than could be given. br / br /The Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street DVD (2006) is sparse as to features, but in reality you don't mind it - the production itself is lush as to feel, and with attention to historic detail of the times (Georgian England), which makes it a great film to watch. br / br /One caveat: If you need assistance with the rather thick antique London accents in this film, there is a "subtitles" on/off switch which may be of assistance. When my husband and I watched it, he inadvertently left the subtitles on, and at times, you really needed them for the accents and often mummbled responses of the actors (in keeping with the film, to be sure, but without subtitles, you often missed very important points.) br / br /I do recommend this DVD. It would be great to review this film vis a vis the 1936 Todd Slaughter Sweeney Todd, which is more a direct melodrama, as the 2006 DVD is far superior in acting and in feel, IMO. To view the DVD in conjunction with the Depp or Lansbury/Hearn versions of the Sondheim musical is really talking apples and oranges, as the musical versions serve only the visions of Sondheim, which is not even close to the historical renderings of Todd in English literature, to which this DVD is true.
