Amazon.co.uk Review
In the ensuing years since IWorking Girl/I was released, Harrison Ford has never given such a charming and witty performance, Sigourney Weaver hasn't been given quite the same kind of scenery-chewing role, and Melanie Griffith simply hasn't got near doing anything this good again. And yet in Mike Nichols' excellent romantic comedy, they all gel in a film with eminent rewatch value. P The premise is fairly simple. Griffith's lowly secretary gets a job with Weaver's megabitch boss. The former is unhappy at home and work, while the latter is unscrupulous and underhand, and happy to pass off one of Griffith's good ideas as her own. Yet when Weaver's character is incapacitated, in steps Griffith, who quickly attracts the professional and personal attention of Ford, as she attempts to navigate her way to the top--until Weaver reappears on the scene#133; P In lesser hands, all this could become routine Hollywood nonsense, yet here it really clicks. Griffith effectively brokered her career off the back of her performance here, yet all three leads are in fine form, with a strong supporting cast and a delicious script to fall back on. Elements have certainly dated, and the world in many ways has moved on, yet there's still plenty of room in it for films as good as this one.--IJon Foster/I

5 out of 5 stars Let The River Run   May 21, 2007

Nearly twenty years on, this film has survived the test of time and exudes maximum effort from Harrison Ford, Melanie Griffith and Sigourney Weaver. They were all at their peak at the time and it shoes. Melanie steals the show as the secretary who has to brave both the frying pan of a male dominated corporate world and the fire namely her idea stealing boss, Sigourney. br /Though she isn't as qualified as her ivy league peers, she is just as astute, if not smarter. By playing her own little game, she starts to get noticed to the detriment of her crocked boss. It works but only just..and the Working Girl becomes the Working Boss. I remember a scene where Harrison is on the phone whilst simultaneously trying to remove his shirt...Classic !!! Also the classic tune, Let the River Run.

I love this film, I watch it whenever I need cheering up. br / br /5 stars from me br / br /Melanie Grifiths is fantastic in this film, however Sigourney steals the show with her hilarious self-centered comments. Love love love it!!

5 out of 5 stars One that doesn't date, with no Alien or Ark in sight, either!   September 15, 2008

From the sweeping opening scene, with that classic 'Let the River Run' playing across it, to the closing camera pan-out, with Griffiths in her office, fading into a wall of similar offices, a great film. br / br /There is a similar vein to 'Educating Rita', with the underdog, stuck where everyone else thinks she's happy, breaking out and making something of it. But this is a US film, with a lot of hairspray (oh, the 80s!), immature corporate bosses, the superbitch, and none of them have time for the secretary with ideas and a brain. br / br /The killer scene is where Weaver's character is confronted and suddenly cannot talk her way out. The big scene though is where it dawns on Griffiths that she is the boss, not the secretary - a recurring theme throughout is of her being so used to being the secretary that she reacts like one all the time, and cannot bring herself to tell Ford that she's not who he thinks she is - 'no-one listens to the secretary'.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Office Film Ever   June 9, 2009
Graham Chapman (London)
So much to delight the viewer in this film: Alec Baldwin's hairy chested pigman character, Kevin Spacey snorting coke in the limo as 'Bob from Arbitrage', Oliver Platt's office creep, Joan Cusack's big hair - and that's all in the first 5 minutes!! br / br /Who couldn't fall in love with Melanie Griffith's character? Then Harrison Ford actually doing some acting! And Sigourney Weaver as the bitch. It's too good! Intelligent direction - a postmodern ending. What's going on? br / br /Entertainment with a brain and a heart. Mamma Mia? Pah! br / br /

5 out of 5 stars Romance and revenge - office style!   August 29, 2009

I absolutely love this movie. I admit to being pleasantly surprised to have found Harrison Ford in such an non-action hero role. He handles the comedic aspects deftly - such as the applause when he appears shirtless - and also proves a loveable leading man. The two women are fabulous in their roles too. Signourney Weaver's character blind-sides the viewer with her niceness and warmth so that when her betrayal is discovered you will her to receive her comeuppance. Melanie Griffith clears her throat a little too often for my liking but is excellent as the secretary who has to break the rules to advance in her career. For me though, the one thing I adore about this movie is the song "Let the River Run" - it's just shame that the soundtrack CD doesn't feature this version as I would love to have it in my music collection alongside this film in my DVD collection.
