Amazon.co.uk Review
If you can forgive plot holes that you could drive the airliner of your choice through the middle of, then IFlightplan/I is an effective, pacey Hollywood thriller, that somehow manages to hold everything together in spite of its challenging plausibility. P Credit for that must go to its lead actress. In the hands of a lesser talent, this is just the kind of movie that could descend into obscurity. But Jodie Foster, as always, injects her character with a believability and a drive that's hard to resist, and here is no different. P The plot sees her flying her late husband's body back home on a commercial flight. As her and her six year old daughter settle down, Foster soon falls asleep, awaking to find no sign of her child, and no one who can even remember her being on the flight. Has someone taken her? Is it all in Foster's mind? These are the questions the film circles, and for a good hour of its running time, it's compelling Hollywood-style entertainment. P The cracks soon appear when you examine the film more closely though, and it's as if IFlightplan/I is just as aware of that as everyone else. The decision therefore to keep the film moving at a good pace is a wise one, leaving the viewer free to switch their brain off and just enjoy the ride, without querying too much the glabrous script that rarely makes as good use of the premise as you'd hope. P Yet the film still works. It may, after the credits have rolled, have failed to live up to its potential, and there's a good hour of dissection waiting to happen afterwards. Yet, crucially, there's also the best part of a couple of hours of good, solid entertainment in it for you too.--IJon Foster/I

5 out of 5 stars Jodie Foster at her best   April 4, 2006

This is the type of film that Jodie Foster plays to perfection. She plays Kyle Pratt, an aircraft designer who has just lost her husband. Together with her daughter they embark on bringing his body from Berlin to New York on a commercial airliner. pWhen she wakes up to find her daughter missing Kyle is anxious but everyone assures her that she can't have gone far. A search of the plane reveals no sign of her daughter and more worrying is the fact that nobody on board even remembers seeing her daughter. For the majority of the flight we're then left to wonder if the daughter actually existed or if grief has made Kyle Pratt lose her mind. The latter seems to be the consensus of the flight crew and passengers.pThis is a fast-paced thriller that really deserves accolades for a brilliant story (however far-fetched) and also for the stunning performance of Jodie Foster. We've not seen her in much lately but this is a definite return to the big time. A thoroughly enjoyable film on par with 'Red Eye'.

5 out of 5 stars A suspenseful thrill ride with the world's greatest actress   May 11, 2006

I was surprised by some of the less than stellar reviews this film received, mainly because Jodie Foster, the consummate actress, just does not make bad movies - especially at this stage in her illustrious career. A few comparisons to The Forgotten did manage to lower my expectations a bit going in, but Flightplan really impressed me. Yes, you have to stretch credibility a little bit when you watch it, but that's almost to be expected since we are talking about a movie and not a documentary or reenactment of actual events. It's not easy to come up with a decent ending for a movie like this (and, inevitably, some viewers will think it should have taken a different path at the end), but I think the filmmakers hit a stand-up triple if not a home run in the case of Flightplan. br / br /Jodie Foster plays Kyle Pratt, a grieving widow flying home from Germany with her daughter and the body of her husband (who died when he fell off the roof of their building). It's a huge, brand new airplane, one which Pratt actually helped design, and she sets out to search every inch of it after she wakes up, some three hours into the flight, to find her six-years-old daughter missing. Like any mother, she does a quick search of the surrounding area before quickly slipping into panic mode, soliciting the help of the crew and, ultimately, the captain (Sean Bean). A search is organized by the crew, but no one finds any sign of little Julia (Marlene Lawston). To make matters worse, no one on board the plane even remembers seeing the little girl, and everyone on the passenger list is accounted for. By now the air marshal (Peter Sarsgaard) is heavily involved, as Pratt has begun making quite a disturbance. She just wants to find her child, but no one believes the girl was ever on the plane. Can the drama of such a situation play out effectively for over an hour? You bet it can, especially if Jodie Foster is the one pulling at your heartstrings. br / br /I think this film is put together extremely well. A gloomy, somewhat discordant beginning lays the groundwork for what is to come, introducing a level of ambiguity that makes it more difficult to figure out where this movie is ultimately taking you. The acting is really top-notch overall (with the exception of Sarsgaard, who doesn't seem to be putting all that much effort into it). I thought Sean Bean was particularly impressive as the captain. Jodie Foster, of course, is superb, and the viewer can't help but develop a really strong relationship with her; a less talented actress might have had trouble sustaining the tension over the course of the entire film, but Jodie keeps ratcheting up the old suspense meter with every action she takes in her desperate search - and she climbs all over that plane, showing me places I never even knew existed. The film's moment of truth comes toward the end, when the whole nature of the story suddenly takes a dramatic turn. I think it comes through it with flying colors, giving us a highly satisfying ending - which is quite a feat for a film of this nature. br / br /Even if you were to hate the whole story, Flightplan is still worth watching for Jodie Foster alone. With all of the movie stars filling up Hollywood these days, it's a rare treat to watch a true actress at work. Nobody does it better than Jodie Foster.

5 out of 5 stars great, paranoia inducing thriller   June 2, 2006

This is a great, sparse thriller. Unlike many films, you really can't be sure where it's going. There's a real European feel (other than the popcorn ending - which you actually really want anyway - you feel like foster's earned a break by the end of the film). br /I think it will bear out for repeat viewings once you know what's going on - as I think it will do well for clue spotting, sixth sense style. br /As you'd expect, Jodie Foster's acting is flawless, but to be fair, there are superb performances by all, and the sparse, uncluttered, unsentimental script really builds up the atmosphere. There is amazing use of the confinement of the plane which also builds the suspense brilliantly. br /Best of all, the film plays to all your prejudices and paranoias and then explodes all of them. The only time Foster gets any sympathy for instance, is when she accuses an arab of being involved. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back Jody Foster!!   April 4, 2006

Very enjoyable, with a few unexpected twists!brJody Foster was superb, and really held it all together!brA very thoughtful, even paced thriller, with a timeless message, that one person can be correct, and the majority incorrect, even when the evidence seems to 'scream' the reverse! She really had you thinking that she was right, or deluded!!brOne negative was that I felt Sean Bean was hopelessly misscast as the rather robotic Airline Captain; a waste of his considerable talent! brA pleasant surprise after the rather negative reviews I had read about the film!
