| Customer Reviews: Gorgeously haunting, poetic and dreamlike... June 1, 2006 Ross Zemke (UK) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
It's no recently discovered fact that Robert Altman makes thinking movies for his audience. Here he gives us his most unusual and visually brilliant creation from the years for which he's most well known for. You hear of films being described as dreamlike, well "3 WOMEN" is most probably the only film in the history of cinema that completely fits that description. One might say Altman's not in this case interested in plot or an easy flowing structure, nor should the audience be expecting this. Instead, what we receive is an intimate portrayel of an ethereal, alien landscape. A world filled with vivid colours and haunting imagery that's not been matched in its brilliance since. Apart from the top-notch direction, what really holds the film together are the magical performances from its three magical leading ladies. The striking subtleness of Sissy Spacek, the mystical glances from Janice Rule and of course, the most unorthodox of Altman's creatures , the unforgetable Shelley Duvall. Her interpretation of the pathetic cipher suddenly morphing into a symbol of leadership is as much disturbing as it is moving. An absolute masterpiece, a must own for any Altman, Duvall, Spacek, Rule fan. Don't watch it with expectations, instead treat it the way it should be, for this film was never truely intended or meant to be understood.
Altman's greatest September 30, 2009 I first saw this film when it was first released and I just watched it again. I was a bit worried, often films that we remember as wonderful don't withstand time and on viewing years later seem dated and dull. Not so this film!
br /Robert Altman is one of my favourite directors and this has got to be his finest jewel. Shelley Duvall is magnetic. This is the film that defines her as an actress. Her character is so quirky yet so real. We have all known women like this all over the world. And Sissy Spacek is the perfect counterpoint
